Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

Anyone know if it'd even be possible for the PS3 to utilize the mutli out for a possible 6 channel analog out for DTS-MA and PCM 5.1? I don't have an HDMI receiver and really did not plan on upgrading soon, so this would be a wonderful option for high definition audio. I figure it would not be too hard to implement with a firmware update. Thoughts?

Can't be certain about that output as it's proprietary. That said, the PS3 would have to be able to decode those formats internally, and for a system that lacks a scaler (either properly enabled or included at all, we'll find out), I doubt that the PS3 contains the necessary hardware/software to do it. I'd love to be wrong, but I don't think I am.

Also, even if the PS3 did decode it, Sony or some other 3rd party vendor would have to make a dongle to support it. Historically has one been made for the PS2 to allow 6 channel audio out via the multi-out? If so, your best bet is to get an old model which should work with the PS3 (which is what I did since PS3 component cables are so hard to find).

New cabling for the PS3 seems to emphasize the HDMI aspect of the system, so if it hasn't been done in the past, it's unlikely to be made now.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

My brother placed a pre-order with Toys R Us for a PS3. He was so excited when he finally received it. After playing with for a couple days, he returned it for a refund. Says he was really not that impressed. Could the fact that he ran it on a 720P tv have anything to do with it?

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

was he watching BD movies? did he go into the menu to allow 1080i output to his TV? If he just checked 480p and 720p, the PS3 would output 480p when playing back a 1080-encoded movie.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

Totally depends on how he set it up. If he only checked 720p, and only watched 1080 and/or 480 content, then it was all downscaled to 480p (or i!). So no wonder he wasn't impressed if that was the case.

One of my TVs is only 720p but it accepts 1080i and scales it (quite well, actually). So I enable 1080i and 720p on it, and it looks pretty darned good.

But I do the majority of my BD and 1080i gaming on my living room set which is 1080i/480p/i only. If I ever buy a 720p only game, I'll probably use my other set to play it, as that would get downscaled to 480p on my living room set.

He wasn't planning to buy any games or BD movies until he tried the console. Think he only had what came with the PS3. I'll ask him what media he was using.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

Some questions coming from someone without alot of technical knowledge. I am thinking about buying a PS3, mostly for blu ray viewing. However my new Hitachi plasma only displays in 480, 720p and 1080i (no 1080p). So will I have any issues with playing blu ray movies in 1080i from the PS3? Also, will blu ray look as good on this type of set in comparison with HD DVD, since blu ray seems to be primarily designed for 1080p output.

I have also read that blu ray picture quality suffers in comparison to HD DVD because of the codecs that they use. Most of these articles seem old though. Should I expect the same picture quality if I were to go out in buy a blu ray movie today, as I would see from an HD DVD? These questions may be out of touch, but I was just looking for some advice before I made my move. At this point the only other option for me would be the Toshiba A2, but I feel like Blu Ray may be pulling ahead in the format war (hard to say though). Because of this my only blu ray option in this same price range would be the PS3.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

With those resolutions you'll be fine. The PS3 will output 1080p at 1080i and your set will do the i/p conversion.

When comparing apples to apples (same movie), I've read here that BD and HD-DVD are pretty much on par picture-wise. There are some differences between some discs having better audio than their counterparts (i.e. TrueHD or Lossless vs. standard DD) but I can't remember which titles those were.

Others who own both formats can chime in and be more helpful. I just know that what I've seen on display that is HD-DVD looks to be on par with my BD/PS3 at home.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

What does the display info look like on everyones setup? At the top right where it shows video Mbps the 'ps' is cut off and at the bottom right the last digit or so of the counter is cut off. I knew my tv had some pretty bad overscan but it's pretty shocking to see display info from the PS3 getting whacked.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

Hi Brett, yes it's the evil overscan. On my LCD TV (no overscan) everything is nice and visible. There's actually enough room for more than 5% overscan.

But on my living room set (7 year old Panny HDTV) I had to enter service menu to reduce overscan because it was so bad.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

Got some questions, from one PS3 owner to another:
First, Does the PS3 still not output 720p for BluRay playback?
If not, I could set my PS3 to output 1080i (my DLP TV accepts 1080i and 720p), but then it seems it's always outputting 1080i.

When I first got it, I set it up by letting the PS3 "automatically" determine which resolutions my TV supported, and it chose 1080i as the default - and, if I recall correctly, the MotorStorm demo looked much better when I turned 1080i off. Does anyone else have this experience?

Also, to clarify an earlier post - if I set my HDMI Audio Out to Bitstream, will I ever get the uncompressed PCM soundtrack from some movies? Or will it downconvert to something else?

Thanks in advance.

What's the deal with the 'volume' setting that you can access from the onscreen menu? The center setting is called 'normal' I think and you can adjust it up or down 2 or 3 ticks. I've left it in the center so far.

To answer my own question, YES. Setting the HDMI Audio Out option (under BD/DVD Options) to Bitstream will, in fact, allow you to play back uncompressed PCM soundtracks. I tried it with the movie Click.

I don't understand this, but I'm happy that it works.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

Has anyone tried the component video output of the PS3? I know it requires Sony's specific cables for this.

The reason I'm asking, my CRT RPTV has HDMI and, of course, component. However, I'm going to be using HDMI 1080i for the Toshiba HD-A2 because of its upscaling capabilities and maybe component at 1080i for the PS3. The reason being is my display allows for only ONE calibration setting for each input/scanrate. This way I can make a specifically calibrated 1080i for PS3 and a specifically created 1080i for the Toshiba. There is virtually no difference in image quality on my display between HDMI and component, but just wondering how well the PS3 outputs 1080i component - I suspect there is no clipping issue for one.

David Boulet or anyone else,

Regarding PS3 audio...have you done any comparisons with the DD or DTS compared to PCM 2.0? Any thoughts?

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

So far I've preferred decoding 2.0 LPCM in Prologic versus even the *great* sounding Lossy 640 kbps Dolby or 1500 bit-rate DTS core. Lossless, even in 2.0, just sounds better to my ears (on the few titles I've listened to with it, like 8 below).

However... when I upgrade to HDMI... I look forward to lossless *multichannel*... hehe.

Nope. My B&K process is basically a reference 30. I just happen to still think that the *fidelity* of the sound is better with LPCM in 2.0 than in lossy 5.1...though the full-bit-rate lossy core on BD sounds WAAAY better than what we typically live with on DVD!

Yes, I have a PS3 and a Toshiba HD-A1. I like that the HD-DVD player decodes Dolby TrueHD. I guess the PS3 does also, but to my knowledge, not many BD titles use it.

On the topic of Lossless audio, be it multichannel PCM or Dolby TrueHD, it is incredible. It's like those Claritin commercials, where a layer of "fuzziness" is stripped away. It sounds like the sound is coming out of a spot three feet in front of the speakers. I'm not sure if I'd prefer it in 2.0 flavor to 5.1 lossy audio, but I totally agree that the difference in fidelity is tremendous. And my wife can even tell the difference. THAT's saying something.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

Is there a way to disable the on-screen icons such as 'Play', 'Pause', etc. when the PS3 is performing Blu-ray Disc playback? I looked through the PS3's options, but I couldn't find anything.

Thanks.

So, is 2.0 LPCM totally uncompressed?

Also, do I need to set the PS3 audio menu to "PCM" instead of "bitstream" for this? Thanks!

P.S. You talked me out of buying an HDMI 1.1 or 1.2 receiver - I figure I'll save the money and buy a nice 1.3 when that time comes. I was going to order the Onkyo TX-SR804, but it's not really an upgrade over my Yamaha HTR-5890 other than just the HDMI for lossless audio. I want my next receiver to have a superior amp, performance, and HDMI 1.3. I don't mind upgrading or changing out video players every so often, but receivers are something I don't want to replace very often.

I have the 360 add-on and a PS3, but the PS3 is still in the box in the closet. I haven't really committed to it just yet. I read stuff on the forums and it makes me want to break it out, then I'll read other things and it makes me want to return it and get my money back. Its been in the closet for a month so I really don't know what I'm missing yet

I'm running with my PS2 component cable and don't have any issues with picture quality. I'm running them through my Outlaw 950 and don't have any reason to complain about the picture quality.

Thanks.

Press the Triangle button on the controller to bring up the on screen options.

I have the PS3, Toshiba HD-A1 and the 360 add on. The PS3 and the Add On are both great with loading times. I don't have a TV that supports HDMI so both are connected through component. Both are great in PQ but as of now, the PS3 has better sound. I hope MS releases the DTS patch for the Add On soon. I had to turn up the sound on the PS3 though. By going to the options menu (triangle) I had to go to the volume option and move it to +2.

The Toshiba HD A1 is a different story. Even with components, I find it to be much clearer than both the PS3 and the Add on. Also the sound quality cannot be touched by both. I have it connected through the 6 channel analog to my receiver and the sound is a lot more clear.

Romar,

Pressing the Triangle button during BD playback bring up a whole slew of on-screen icons. Is there one there that will disable the 'Play', 'Pause', etc. on-screen icons that occur in the bottom, left-hand corner of the screen during playback? If so, which one?

Thanks for your help.
