the PS3 doesn't modify aspect ratio of DVDs. it's likely your display which is locking into 16x9 "full" mode with a 480p signal even if it's a 4x3 signal that should really be pillarboxed on the sides.

Not Peter, but I've scoured the 'net far and wide and haven't seen any concrete announcements, just conjectures from various sites. The anti-PS3 crowd say "no chance, it doesn't even have a hardware scaler, and if there is a software fix it will draw too heavily on system resources". The pro-PS3 stance is that there might be a scaler chip that wasn't enabled properly and should be addressed by a firmware update (which Sony has backed off since their initial announcement of it).

The lack of scaling really does tick me off though. I wonder which will come first, the fix for it, or my buying a 1080p set. :p

My CRT RP HDTV is about to turn 7 years old, so it's nearly time for an upgrade. Just waiting on HDMI 1.3, deep color, and all that good stuff. Maybe late 2007.

Do you all think that the Blu Ray movies on the PS3 are grainy?

I only have Saw and the Sopranos but they are both grainy, especially Saw.

The game Resistance loooks great and DVDs aren't grainy either, is it just the two peices of BD software I happened to buy?

Mine only does that with the PS3. No such problem with the 360 or a computer. I hope they add an aspect ratio adjustment feature to an upcoming update. Even the 360 has that.

As for bluray discs being grainy, Superman Returns, yes, Talladega Nights, no. Maybe it depends on the film.

It very well may be the type of input on your TV.

Some sets vary the modes with HDMI vs. component and so forth.

I got my monoprice HDMI switcher and new cables tonite, (monoprice rocks!) and switched the PS3 to HDMI from component. PQ is definitely a bit sharper and more detailed with HDMI. Also I directly compared the PS3 480P output through HDMI with my oppo player upscaled to 720P (native rate of my mits PJ) and I gotta tell you the 480P output of the PS3 was pretty damned close. (also the scaler in the mits is supposed to be very good too...) so everyone saying the 480P playback on the PS3 is "horrid" is definitely smoking something in my opinion.

but what do I know? I am keeping my oppo through the switcher because it's region free and I have a bunch of PAL discs.

The triangle brings up the onscreen control menu. Couple rows down and to the right is the "Image Quality Adjustment" setting. Select with "X" and adjust accordingly. I turned them both to "OFF"

Wow, thanks Sony for neglecting to put that in the instruction manual!

Peter, what exactly do those values do, do you know? I suppose setting it to "zero" means turning them off? Is there anything on the BD side that should be enabled/disabled that you know of, to maximize playback?

I'd like to hear everyone's feedback after modifying the settings for 480p and how it compares to their existing SD DVD player. I'm considering purchasing the PS3 for Blu-ray, but would also possibly use it for SD DVD if it's quite good.

Well, it seems to smooth MPEG2 block noise ("Frame" and "Block" Noise Reduction). Us old timers with LaserDisc players would use something similar to compensate for noisy pressed discs. Probably it's for less than optimal authored DVDs. I'm guessing it's meant for home brewed DVDs, or those folks who like to turn the sharpness way way up on their TV (you know, the folks that complain about the "excessive grain" on X-Men: The Last Stand)

Both the BD and DVD playback is programming, so they use different applications. There are no such options on the BD playback menu.

Another advantage of doing it in software is that Sony can update it to support DVD upconversion in the future. Rumor has it around the European launch...and it will support HDMI 1.3 Deep Color!

Since I don't have a scaling DVD player here, it seems quite good compared to my other progressive (480p) DVD players. "Crisper" is the word that comes to mind, of course it's also running thru HDMI so that can be the biggest difference.

I found a 60 gig at Target on Dec. 29th, but it is still in the box.....
I know that I should have it hooked up and running, but I have a 52"XBR3 LCD on order along with the BDP-S1 and the STR-DA5200ES. I'm expecting delivery by the end of the month so it really not a problem.

I picked up a PS3 on Friday, opening up a Target credit card to save 10%. I'm thrilled with the quality of the machine. When I took it out the box, my housekeeper says "it's beautiful"

It took a while configuring the wireless and setting up the audio, plus several hours of downloading demos (thank goodness I bought the 60GB model, I've downloaded 15GB worth of demos so far).

I've played a couple Blu-ray movies and again no problems at all (unlike the glitchy HD-A1 player I have). Only odd flaw I've found so far (watching movies and during games) is that the HDMI connection resets when each screen is displayed (like FBI warnings, trailers, menus, etc) which causes a little flickering of the image. The HD-DVD player doesn't do this.

Hi all.

I recently acquired a 60 GB PS3, and I am a little confused by the system software settings. (Kudos to Mark Butler for the link to the 'real' manual

) Anyway, what I am confused about is that I see there are settings under BD / DVD settings that address video out via HDMI, but are there settings for video via HDMI for games or does it default to something? If it defaults, what does it default to?

Mine is still in the box as well, since 12/18. I bought it at Target as well. I have till March to return it if I don't open it. I'm waiting around to see how things pan out after CES. Standalone Blu Ray players might drop under PS3 prices in the next couple of months and I might just get one of those. I have enough games on my 360 to keep me busy. I don't really need another game system.

It defaults to whatever resolution the game is and your monitor supports.

720p goes to either 720p or 480p

1080p to 1080i or 1080p

1080i to 1080i

Thanks. But under the BD / DVD Settings for HDMI video the choices are: Automatic, RGB, or Y Pb, Cb / Cb Pr / Cr. Any idea what games default to, Automatic? Still confused.

I'm not sure, I've just set it to "automatic"

I guess there are some monitors out there that specify exactly what type of HDMI input signal is preferred. My Sony XBR does not.

Thanks again. I was trying to work around a specific issue with my Mitsubishi WD-65731 where 1080p feeds into it appear 'washed out'. I thought I would try setting the HDMI output to either RBG or Y Pb, Cb / Cb Pr / Cr and see if the picture improved, but there was no difference. If I force the PS3 to output 720p via HDMI rather than 1080p, I see the kind of picture I expect. There's something wrong with the way my display accepts a 1080p input for a 1080p TV.

What kind of XBR do you have? Are you seeing a 'washed out' picture over 1080p or the 'green push' I've seen referenced in the XBR2 thread over at the AVS Forum? I'm coming to the conclusion I will be in the market for a new display soon.

I'm pretty sure Peter has the KD34XBR960.

My equip.
KD34XBR960 (tv)
STR-DA333ES (5.1 reciever)

I think I'm gonna go get a PS3 20G but I want to make sure I know what I'll have.

As this would be my only HD source I would hook the PS3 up via HDMI to the one HDMI on the tv. Simple right? Is the PS3 HDMI 1.3?

Audio wise this is an older 5.1 receiver which I guess will need to be replaced in order to have all the new audio formats. Is 1.5 mbps DTS the best I'll get right now with this configuration? I won't get any lossless?

Edit: and for my peace of mind... the PS3 can 'lay down' right? It doesn't have to stand up?

PS3 can go upways or sideways. It's curved though so you can't stack another component on top of it.

It has HDMI 1.3 which futureproofs you for deep color and advanced auido in native compressed form to your future decoder.

Yes, if you don't have HDMI on your recevier the best audio you'll get over the (optical) SPDIF output right now is DTS 1500 data rate from DTS-HD streams and DD 640 rate from DD+ or D THD streams.

With LPCM titles, the player will downfold the signal to 2 channel in native resolution over SPDIF. You can then playback in stereo or via ProLogic. That sounds primitive, but it actually can sound BETTER than lossly codecs in multi-channel!

I don't think that the PS3 will do 5.1 analog ouptut from internally decoded advanced audio streams. However, our need for that is only temporary as our next receiver (both you and me) will be HDMI.
