It looks like Speed will finally be hitting the screen in a live action film from the Wachowskis!

Ricci on board to play Trixie and some of the other cast members are mentioned in the following link.

However, the big question for me is who is going to play Racer X? I hope they're not arrogant enough to think that he shouldn't be a part of this live action film.

Nah, a little is OK. They just have to keep what people remember. It MUST have two points on the front end and it MUST be white with the red "M" on the hood. Everything else is negotiable.

Oh, yeah - I forgot. It also must be the only race car every made with a trunk big enough for a chimpanzee and a small child to hide in

I like Ricci as Trixie and John Goodman as Pops, but Emile Hirsch as Speed kills any anticipation I might have had for the product.
Unless it includes the Car Acrobatics Team

What's wrong with Hirsch playing Speed?
It looks like Matthew Fox is going to play Racer X.
Fox tunes up for Warners' 'Speed' ride
19 April 2007 (The Hollywood Reporter)
Larry and Andy Wachowski have added another two passengers to their Speed Racer vehicle.
Matthew Fox is in final negotiations to play Racer X in the live-action update of the 1960s cartoon for Warner Bros. Pictures and producer Joel Silver.
In addition, Aussie actor Kick Gurry is in negotiations to play Sparky, Speed's hippie mechanic. |

Hippie mechanic?! Have these people ever seen the show?
Sparky wears high heels for cryin' out loud. Nothing about his character suggests "hippie".

Speed has Jet Li level martial arts skills. As a live action character he should have credible physicality. That's hardly Hirsch. Of course if Matthew Fox is playing a super secret agent/world class car driver, credible hardly seems what the producers are going for.

If we see the Car Acrobatic team then who will play Snake Oiler. Better yet, who will play Inspector Detector.

Since when? The Speed I remember from the series was average in all things but his driving.

Numerous times, he would take out gangs of baddies with flying kicks and fisticuffs. He was also a pretty good investigator who generally did Inspector Detector's job for him.
I've got all the DVD's so I've seen every ep within the last 3 years. I'm not speaking from distant childhood memories.

.........ah, I also own all of the DVD set's and I am not basing my comment on "distant childhood memories", having watched many of them recently I don't remember Speed doing too many "Jet Li" type martial arts moves as much as he just basically fought with his fists with a few kicks thrown in for good measure.
My point was that I think your Jet Li comment was a bit exaggerated.

Hell, I think your comment about Speed being average in all things except driving is a bit exaggerated.

IMO, Speed had some martial arts skills that go beyond average.

Re: Here he come, here comes SPEED RACER...he's a demon on wheels.
I dunno, I just don't see it Robert & I even popped in a few again to have another look and aside from the obvious unreality of animation he just doesn't strike me as Jet Li/Bruce Lee in the way Brook described.....I mean in most episodes he gets caught and needs to be rescued by either Trixy, Spridel & Chim Chim or even by the girl he's "rescuing" as in Girl Daredevil, that's why I said Average....as much as he wants to be, without his Friends & Family (and even Racer X "secretly Speed's older Brother" on occasion) he's no James Bond, and I always thought that was the point...a Driver is only as good as his team.
Speed Never struck me as lone dog's like Jet Li, Bruce Lee, Bruce Li or even Bruce Leroy.

Re: Here he come, here comes SPEED RACER...he's a demon on wheels.
I'll try and find some specific references if I get the time to do it.
But when I compared him to Jet Li, I mean in terms of Speed is seventeen, eighteen years old and can take out 5 big guys who all have guns with a few flying kicks and punches with the occasional judo throw for good measure.
Anyway, the comparison was not in the sense that he's showing off electrifying kung fu moves, obviously the level of animation in Speed Racer wouldn't allow for anything of the sort.

I cannot see this movie as being good, but they seem to have succeeded in translating the car's design into real world fiberglass (Kevlar?). The car looks pretty slick to me.

Yeah, the 2D version is so much better!
Not really.
