Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

Thanks to TerryRL's post in the box office thread, I found this little item about the SR sequel on IESB.NET:
http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option...=581&Itemid=27

Quote:
The studio was quite happy with the way Supes was reintroduced to the world and next time around expect to see him in full action battle mode. We’ve been told that Superman will have the battle of his life in the sequel and audiences can expect one of the ultimate baddies in the D.C. universe to come to Metropolis to pick a fight with the Man of Steel.

I don't want to see the SR sequel sacrifice the characters for action. But I trust Singer to create a film that will satisfy both fans of SR and those who wanted something a bit different.

Good link Larry...more from that:

Weeks before the DVD has it’s grandiose release, the IESB has learned that Bryan Singer has finalized a deal to move forward with the sequel this past weekend and the studio is planning to start production sometime next fall, possibly next September.

"X2" proved Singer can do both.

He certainly is capable, I just personally hope he delivers a more balanced film (for me) this time.

I eagerly await the next installment and hope for the best.

Hey All,

I second this thought that the next one could be great, and I hope it is. Singer has proved with the X-Men series that he can balance character and action. I was blown away by X-Men and I think that's where much of my disappointment with Superman Returns lies. But let's see where this goes!

Cheers,

Re: *** Official SUPERMAN RETURNS Discussion Thread

Singer will pull it off. I personally feel that he doesn't have that far to go to balance it off because I greatly enjoyed what he did in Returns.

Still, I have no doubt, with the threads he's created and left unfinished in Returns, that the sequel will have more drama and more conflict, without sacrificing character that I think he got right in Returns.

I just really love what's going with DC's two biggest properties under the direction of Nolan and Singer. Hopefully, they won't get burned out.

As much as Singer wanted to match his movie with Donners. To me they just seem to be in different universes. I sure wish he ignored Donners versions.

Yep, Bryan Singer is indeed doing another "Superman" film - and word is, General Zod is about to make his first on-screen appearance in the series, since, well, that recent episode of 'Smallville'. Jude Law has always been the favourite for the part, and an insider told me this week that "nothing's changed. They still want Law to be Zod. Depends on finances". Yep, he's alluding to the sequel's lesser budget - it's had about a hundred grand shaved off, compared to the first film - and whether or not Warner can afford such a big-name cast this time around. Surely, they can.

I don't mind Zod either but I think they need another Villain like Bizarro or someone else with super powers.

Well let's see there is:

Silver Banshee

Parasite

Myxlptlyyx (I know I spelled that wrong)

Bizzaro

Brainiac

Imperiex

Manchester Black and the Elite

Livewire

Satanus

Ruin

Maxima

Mongul

Lobo

and of course Darkseid.

Those are the one's off the top of my head.

Re: *** Official SUPERMAN RETURNS Discussion Thread

Intergang would be fun.

Zod is a complete waste...if they go that way, I'll probably skip the film. It will indicate rather strongly that Singer doesn't care about Superman...just Donner's Superman I and II.

Re: *** Official SUPERMAN RETURNS Discussion Thread

Zod. Bah. Just WHAT is the aversion to doing something ORIGINAL with Superman??? Singer did the homage bit in "Returns" and almost carried it too far, but IMO pulled it off without the project evolving into an actual remake. It worked once. Just once. But PLEASE, let's not do yet another Hollywood retread job by bringing characters from "Superman II" into the new series when there are so many great, FRESH ideas out there to work with as far as Supes is concerned.

If this is true and they go with Zod in the second film, what a testament it would be to a complete lack of guts and imagination. What would follow, Snoop Dog reprising Richard Prior's role in the "reimagining" of "Superman III"??? No thanks. And no offense to those of you who would like to see Zod return in a new Superman film, but I'll certainly not be buying any tickets (or DVD/HD-DVD) if this comes to pass.

Careful man! There's a beverage here!

Re: *** Official SUPERMAN RETURNS Discussion Thread

Doug nailed it.

I've promoted the view that SR was a "bridge" from the Donner films to a new Superman series. If they go with Zod in the SR sequel, it will be clear that they only want to retreat Donner and not take those characters in interesting new directions. Plus, Zod died in Superman II.

Re: *** Official SUPERMAN RETURNS Discussion Thread

I would love to see Braniac or Darkseid, or even the Cyborg. There are plenty of major baddies besides Zod that Supes could fight. Hell, throw Doomsday in there for kicks (even though you would get about zero characterization from him).

I wouldn't put too much stock into that Zod rumor, it's been flying around since before Singer was on board.

Re: *** Official SUPERMAN RETURNS Discussion Thread

I can't imagine Singer touching Zod, considering how carefully he sidestepped around directly referencing Superman II in Returns. While I loved the connections to Donner's film in SR, I think bringing back General Zod would be a bit too much.

I really don't care whether they use a villain from the comics, but I do think a foe who can somehow fight toe-to-toe with Superman is the way to go, something imaginative now that all the set-up of SR is out of the way. When I look at the Metallo stuff from the SR videogame trailer, that seems to me like the kind of villain that would knock people's socks off.

I thought they cut it by more than $100,000 ? That's pennies to a film studio.

Re: *** Official SUPERMAN RETURNS Discussion Thread

I think that Singer knows he will open himself to an immense amount of criticism if he goes with Zod, so I doubt he'll be back(unless it's some kind of cameo). I think that the chunk of New Krypton that Superman threw into space will play some part in the sequel. And I wouldn't be surprised if it involves either Brainiac or Darkseid. I bet Luthor will be around as well(I know this will excite the masses. )

I assume they meant $100M...as the number tossed around for both S2 and B2 is $175M. Which is a increase for Batman

A cameo by Zod is fine...making him the major villain would be terrible.

I still stand by my idea for the sequel and villain:

Even though it departs from the comics, have Richard become Metallo, created by Luthor.

Re: *** Official SUPERMAN RETURNS Discussion Thread

I don't like the idea of using Zod in the next film. Hopefully this is just an new variation on an old rumor. If he really wants to do something with Zod, I say fight the urge and sit on the idea and keep it as a possibility for something like the third (or preferably fourth) film in the series. But please don't use him in the second (and preferably not the third) film. That is just too much of a re-tread of S:TM and S2.

I'd like to see someone like Brainiac or Darkseid as the big bad in the next film. Whoever they use, I'd like someone very alien and very powerful, and I want to see both Metropolis and the rest of Earth take some heavy damage. I'd like Luthor to be around and scheming, but I'd prefer him to move into the "super-rich businessman pulling the strings who can't legally be tied to the bad he is responsible for" role.

That's the win. Right there. Brainiac I think is a little too soon (Have him come down in the third sequel, born from the planetoid chunk that Superman threw into space) but Metallo keeps Luthor in the mix (financially, I think they'll still need Spacey's name for the sequel) and allows for some NASTY fight possibilities, plus the emotional heft of Superman having to fight his son's Father.

Metallo doesn't thrill me. A robot/cyborg seems lame to me & would only work if it was a side kick villain. Especially if they go with that giant Metallo like in the video game. That just takes it to Godzilla territory.

Re: *** Official SUPERMAN RETURNS Discussion Thread

Me, I'd think it would be fine if Zod returned, if done right.

Some of you folks need to realize that there are some of us who have never picked up a "Superman" comic book. That's me and a large segment of the movie going public. I look at these movies as films on their own merit.

I loved "X2" and "Batman Begins" despite never having read the comics. To hear you folks throwing around names of possible villians you need to take into consideration what would work in a FILM.

Zod didn't die. He disappeared into the fog in the fortress. The ABC version had him being led away by the Arctic Police in handcuffs. Lets say Luthor or another villian mentioned here figures out a way to give Zod his powers back. With modern VFX tech we could see a terrific fight that we hoped to see back in 1981. Singer has said that the crystals being left by Kitty on New Krypton was a VERY big deal and will be addressed in the sequel.

Is anyone groaning at the thought of Nolan using Joker in "Dark Knight"? Aww, he's just retreading Burton! Right? nope
Magneto was an ongoing threat in all the X-Men films.

Using the same villian again doesn't mean retread.

Re: *** Official SUPERMAN RETURNS Discussion Thread

Peter, I don't mind those Zod ideas at all. I remember discussing a rematch between Zod and Supes for SUPERMAN III with friends back in the eighties, and the idea was pretty popular then. Of course, SUPERMAN III turned out a lot different than we all imagined...

I guess I'm just living in the past, but I wouldn't mind seeing more ties between the new Superman films and the old ones(at least I and II). But, from a commercial standpoint, I believe that Singer needs to move past this now and make the new film as unique as possible(without repudiating what has gone before, of course).

Hey Peter

By your own admission, it is pretty safe to assume that you weren't reading Superman comics even when the Reeve films came out and yet Lex and Zod are both villains from the comics that I assume you liked. If done right and must emphasize the phrase "DONE RIGHT" you wouldn't be disappointed in a villain like Darkseid. Darkseid can bring down a s#!t storm on Superman the likes to which Zod couldn't even begin to compare. But then again I'm not so sure if Singer would do Darkseid any justice on the big screen, he really does seem to be stuck in Donnerville.

As far as Nolan goes with Dark Knight, you have to understand that there are many (myself included) who feel that the Joker was never really done right. Yeah Jack did his usual schtick but that's just it, what was done in 1989 was just Jack Nicholson in white make-up doing his usual crazy Nicholson routine, but it wasn't the Joker. Now Mark Hamill on the animated series is another story.

And believe me, I don't cut Nolan any slack, I for one didn't like his (and David Goyer) interpretation of Rhas Al Ghul. Furthermore, Rhas was the wrong villain for the first movie. It really should have just been Batman against Falcone and the criminal underworld with Batman establishing a name for himself among the criminals. I would have loved to have seen a super criminal introduced in the follow up. Plus Rhas Al Ghul is so shrewd and powerful he really should have been introduced 2 or 3 movies down the road when Batman has had more experience and wisdom under his belt.

The action scenes would be spectacular, and allow us to explore Metropolis a bit as well.

The drama could be really endearing as well:

1. Supes having to fight his son's father as you said, but also

2. Jason having to watch Superman fight his father/Jason watching his father turn into a monster

3. Richard finding out Supes is the father of Jason, and seeing his fall into darkness (considering most of us here liked Richard, that would be emotional to see)

4. If Luthor creates Metallo from Richard, now you have Superman defending Luthor from Metallo as well

5. Lois losing her husband

I would LOVE to see this movie made.
