So, did they include a sheet of paper stating what work was done? Curious to see if they just replaced your drive as well.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

One thing I thought was interesting I wanted to mention. This might not be news to anyone but me but when mine broke I admit I did take the top off and LOOK inside. I swear I didn't touch a thing. But it somewhat surprised me that the Disc drive is LITERALLY a Computer Optical Drive. Like you could pull it out of the player and stick it in a Computer Drive bay...theoretically.

Or maybe every set top DVD player has always been like this and I never knew.

EDIT: Sorry I didn't see your post while I was posting twice in a row. Yeah it says they replaced my drive as well.

I did the same thing to route an IR emmitter to the receiver so I could use it with an RF remote and the drive is an IDE PC BD drive screwed to the chasis and wired to the players main board.

DMP-BD10/10A v.2.5 firmware posted!

Thanks to sharp eyes on another thread, I can confirm that v.2.5 of the BD10/10A firmware was posted today! Hooray! Our player is still supported!

The link to the "front door" for the BD10/BD10A downloads for all regions is BD | Digital AV | Product Support | Support | Panasonic Global. I downloaded the North America update, burned a CD-R on my iMac and have successfully updated my BD10 for the well-known "Playability and stability" benefits.

Nice. Thanks for posting, Dana.

Does anyone know what this newest update might actually do?

Nope. And I think I know why. It's the same reason Apple is so closed-mouth about software updates. It's been sued several times by product liability lawyers in "class action" suits (that typically benefit only the lawyers). If a company acknowledges that a firmware update fixes specific "issues," the lawyers sue on the basis that the company must have sold a defective player. Then, as part of the law suit, it demands disclosure of the specifics. The company in effect provides the noose by which it gets hanged.

So, we get just "playability and stability."

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

I'm hoping it fixes a bug I have experienced where it sporadically forgets that I have set the player to HDMI output at 720p and resets the output to "Auto", which it usually intereprets as 1080i. My 720p projector does a pretty bad job at downconverting, so this is always noticeable when it happens.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

I see. Thanks, Dana.

So the idea is...you do the firmware upgrade (whether you are aware of any issues or not) and figure everything'll be okay.

I hate to potentially upset the applecart, however, when I don't know what the problem is that I'm fixing. I'd love it if they could make some change that would speed up loading times...but I guess they are not related, eh?

Actually, load times have generally improved with each firmware upgrade even though nothing specific is ever promised. It falls under the "playability" umbrella.

Well then, Ken...I will approach this upgrade with fingers crossed that load times just might improve!

I am not well-versed in the technical aspects of the hardware end of the hobby and firmware upgrades are kinda new to me.

Thanks to you, too, for aiding my education!

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

There is a post at AVS that indicates that the 2.5 firmware does in fact fix the problems reported with The Mummy and a few other titles.

I do not own any of the effected titles, but it appeared to be a legit post.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

I own both The Mummy and The Mummy Returns and they have both caused major audio problems on the BD10 and BD10A. I would normally listen at -20 on my receiver but with these new Universal titles, and Doomsday I heard, I would have to listen at -40 to get the same level. In other words, it was way too loud and distorted. Even with the volume turned way down, it was still distorted. I, and others, reported it to Panasonic about 2 weeks ago and they already came out with a fix for it.... YES, V2.5 is a fix for the audio problems with the new Universal titles. Note: the problem happened with their dts HD Master Lossless audio sent either with HDMI or via x.1 analog audio.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Hey all,

This is kind of off the subject of the recent 2.5 update but is still about this player. Just something I have been curious about.

Is there any reason one would want to use analog cables and use the Multi-channel outputs from the BD player to thier reciever if they have HDMI?

My player is this one of course, and my receiver is a Onkyo TX-SR604. Both have HDMI so that is what I am using...but just been wondering lately if there might be any reason to use the analog outs of the BD10A.

I've noticed Blu-Ray's seem lower volume to me than DVDs and I'm not sure why that is? Guess it's just been on my mind.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Couple possiblilties:

If your receiver doesn't have an HDMI input.

Some people may like the decoding from the player better than the receiver.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

I should mention that my reciever does not have any "Next Gen" Audio, so all the newer formats, TrueHD, DTS-Master, etc, I have set for the player to do all the work and then send it to the reciever which just considers it all uncompressed audio. That is all done through the HDMI...at least as far as I know.

I'm going to feel foolish if I HAVE to use the analog outputs for the reciever to get the audio decoded from the player...

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Pardon my lack of working knowledge on this Panny model:

Does this Panny internally decode DTS-HD Master Audio as it can do with Dolby TrueHD? If not, then DTS-HD MA BDs might benefit from the analog connection (edit: realized later that if it can't decode internally, then it can't output over analog either... duh!). Otherwise, if the unit decodes those internally to PCM as well, then I'd go HDMI if your receiver/processor has an HDMI input.

I know that the forthcoming BD30 decodes both TrueHD and DTS-HD MA to PCM internally or can leave as bistream over HDMI 1.3 per the user's choice.

The BD10/10A neither decodes DTS-HD MA nor bitstreams it, so there is no difference whether you use the analogue outs or the HDMI. For what it's worth, it decodes TrueHD and DTS-HD HR, but it doesn't bitsream them either. So, you can only ever decode in the player and output the advanced codecs either directly as PCM via HDMI or PCM->analogue via the multichannel outs.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Doh! Naturally if it can't decode it... then how could it convert it to analog and output it over analog? Talk about a major brain-fart on my part. Sorry!

Thanks for clarifiction on what the player can do.

Re: V. 2.5 firmware

Over at the AVS Forum, someone posted this link http://www.pasctraining.panasonic.co...RM-INSTALL.pdf to a pdf that offers an explanation for what the v.2.5 firmware does do.
Quote:
• “The Day After Tomorrow” playback enhanced between MENU and Cold Zone game.
• “Cars” Car Finder game playback enhanced.
• “Spriggan” Bonus Visual Slide Show playback enhanced.
• DTS-HD audio playback enhanced.
• “From Hell” Japanese Edition Trivia Track playback enhanced.
• “Sentinel” Japanese Edition playback enhanced.
• “Pirates of the Caribbean” Bonus Features audio playback enhanced.
• “Lord of the Rings” Trilogy playback enhanced.

I have no way to determine its validity.

Does this latest firmware upgrade include all the other enhancements, or do I have to load each one individually?

The latest upgrade includes all of the previous ones.

(Having said that, only the latest upgrade appears at the site so, unless you have an old CD from Panasonic, I don't think there's ready access to the older upgrades anyways.)

I no longer have this player; I gave it to my son in another state so I can't check the OSD. But, it sounds like a Color Space Color space - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia issue. Are you connected using DVI? That usually requires RGB. Maybe the previous owner of the player used a color space setting that doesn't match your TV. See if you can change it.

Run the updater again. It may not have been completely installed. I updated my BD10 and everything worked satisfactorily using an HDMI connection. Also, check all your player settings as some may have changed due to the update.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

FWIW, For Your Eyes Only is a title that would not play on my BD10A until I upgraded to 2.5. The disc loaded, the main menu came up, the Fox BD screen even displayed after pressing "Initiate Mission," but the player would then interminably sit at "Now reading..."

Also, thanks Dana for posting that panasonic.jp/support "front door" link to player firmware upgrades in your post #634. Intuitively drilling down through support links via panasonic.com lands one at a different page that as of this typing still shows 2.4 as the latest fw for the player.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Here's a (probably stupid) question from a technically-challenged individual.

Is there any chance that a firmware upgrade would ever enable the BD-10 to encode DTS-HD MA?

As you might suspect, I am using the analog outs of the player for my lossless audio. I now realize that as DTS HD MA seems to be the current choice du jour for audio tracks on most new releases, I am listening to less and less lossless audio on my new purchases.

Mike, I think the chances are near zero. As best I recall, Panasonic confirmed that Master was right out for the BD10 a long while back.

Rachael, the big disc cat! I used to be looking for Hi-Vision Laserdiscs & D-Theater tapes, now I'm looking for HD-DVD's and Blu-rays.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Mike:

As Leo Di shoulda said in Catch Me If You Can, "I concur" with Rachael.

Although it's not entirely dispositive, Panasonic has released four BD players since the 10 (the 30, 35, 50 and 55), with two more on the way. We could be in for a surprise, but I tend to think that if they were going to do DTS-HD MA support on that player, they would have upgraded the fw by now.

Having said that, your "du jour" comment leads me to say that, although I'm not a new release hound, I don't necessarily think that DTS-HD MA is in mad wider use now than, say, a year ago. What codec is used tends to be studio-specific, with Fox/MGM using it on I think every release, but Sony and Warner hardly using it at all.

I say that to say: take a look at your wish list and current collection and see which studios' titles you're buying/most interested in. If it skews towards a studio not supporting DTS-HD MA, you might be just fine with the "core" 1536 kbps that you're getting from those tracks now.

Having said that, if you're looking to upgrade, the imminent OPPO BD universal player would be an excellent opportunity for you to upgrade to onboard DTS-HD MA decoding and finally get SA-CD playback.
