I really want to experience the lossless aspect of audio with the HD formats so looks like I will be in the market for an AV receiver with HDMI, at least 1.1.

Any suggestions?

Well, I bought the Panasonic XR700 because Panasonic promotes the compatibility of the two units. But, some parts of the manuals are unclear and it is just about impossible to get any competent response from Panasonic customer service. Any response at all, actually, by email at least in the USA.

Denon has a good name and you might want to start there.

Eric, I think you should get patient and wait for more fish to show up in the pond. Furthermore, you should be waiting to see what audio schemes are going to be most prevelant. It's a mess out there. I'd like a new head unit myself but I'll not make a move till things shake out further, alot further.

You make alot of sense but I am the impatient type. But I do agree with you, it is a mess and especially in Australia where it is alot newer and untested to an extent. I am really into the sound more than anything and want to be able to get the best I can. May have to wait though.

Eric,

I agree. I'm into the audio, too. In that regard I think the BD10 is the best high-def player. I don't mean to knock the XR700 as I think it is a very competent mate to the BD10. But, Panny customer service/support is lacking here. Maybe "down under" it is different.

The Panasonic SA-XR700 retails here for around $1429.

Maybe the customer service is better in Oz. Will have to have a listen to it I think. Any reviews around on this receiver?

While the Panasonic BD10 may be the best Blu-ray player right now and Panasonic has some really good HD displays. The reciever I would buy is a Panasonic especially over a Denon. The Denon is going to outclass it in every catagory so if anyone is thinking of replacing there Denon reciever with a Panasonic, I would not do it! IMHO the Panasonics amplifier section is not going to be anywhere near as good and strong as Denon, Pioneer Elite, Sony ES, Harman Kardon ect....... This is not ment to bash Panasonic in any way but they just are not a good reciever company. Besides I save my bashing for Bose.

I got a Panasonic DMP-BD10 for Christmas, and have been following these threads beforehand. I hooked it up last night and everything seems to be working properly now (with exception listed). I first hooked up the BD10 to my Pioneer Elite 82TXS receiver via HDMI, and the receiver hooked to my Pioneer Elite model 610 HD 1080i rear projection TV via component cables (does not have HDMI input). I did not get a picture on the TV, but I had audio. I then added video component from the BD10 to the receiver, along with the HDMI cable. The picture worked with this set-up, and the receiver is showing the HDMI signals being converted for HDMI (within receiver). I did setup in BD10 and selected HDMI for video and audio. All seems to be working now. I'm not sure why I had to also use the component cables along with the HDMI?

My other question? I played the 8 Below Blu-Ray disk that was included with the player. During the snow scenes, I noticed a distinctive yellow splotch near the right center of the screen (about 6-8" by 5" with an irregular shape), which was always present or noticeable during any of the the snow scenes. I'm not sure if this is chroma bug (the unit has the 1.2 firmware installed), or ? Any ideas or opinions are appreciated.

The player sounds great and the picture is super in all other respects. I also viewed Monster House briefly, and did not notice the same issue? But, I'm not sure if I would have seen this, as there are not that many bright scenes in this movie.

This sounds like a uniformity issue. I'm not familiar with this display- is it by any chance an LCD or LCoS?

No, the Pioneer Elite model 610, is a 58" HD 1080i rear projection set. I recently had it professionally calibrated and cleaned (about 2 months ago) and the picture has been outstanding.

I was wondering if anyone here has gotten the Descent BD release from Lion's Gate yet and if there are any problems playing it on the Panasonic? Also, how does the Panasonic handle the picture-in-picture commentary on the disc?

Just threw it in my Panasonic and had no problems at all. It works fine in my Samsung as well, though the Panny is much more responsive in regards to the menus.

No probs on my Panny either except it takes a little longer to load than usual.

Yes. There are two audio commentary tracks and a PIP commentary track. All work perfectly.

Anyone know any more about the DMP-BD10K? Really Panasonic's 2nd gen player or just the BD10 with the latest firmware when it starts shipping?

Question. Once the file is downloaded and decompressed, what method is used to put the file on the cd? Is it just a straight copy function or does some program have to be used to do it? Can I use Nero to create the cd, or simply use windows xp windows explorer?

I installed 1.4 then went through my collection to make sure all worked ok still. All 36 are flawless. Only thing I see up front is a slight increase in chapter skips and menu skips.

I am outputting video via component because my PJ is not hdmi, my next display will be. The upgrade called for improvements in hdmi PQ.

I just got off the phone with Panasonic. They won't send me a 1.4 firmware CD. They told me it was only for Japan. Is Panasonic so big that the head doesn't know what the tail is doing?

Unfortunately, yes. You might try again and see if a different customer service rep will give you a different answer. You might tell that person that there is a different download for the US, UK and Oceania. So, it's obviously not just for Japan. (Supposedly, the download has to match the original region of the player.)

Or, maybe someone here will send you their CD after they have finished with it.
