Re: Weekly RoundUp 9-12-2006

So conflicted, am I, with these SW releases. Buy them, I will not.

Office S2 now, and Moonlighting on DDD's next sale.

I think Grease is this week, everything from Paramount's retailier site shows it this week. Not that I get review copies from them anymore!

All reviews done on a Marantz VP11S1 1080p DLP projector.

Displays professionally calibrated by Gregg Loewen of Lion AV.

Hmm, I was really hoping BB would have a deal if you buy the Star Wars trilogy + Lego Star Wars II. Oh well, I guess I can wait on the game until I actually have time to play it.

As I posted much earlier Miki, I think the Backdraft SE is scheduled for next week...but I also wouldn't be surprised if stores put it out on shelves if they get any in shipment.

I think that Cavett Show disc looks terrific...especially for us movie buffs! From the amazon.com listing:

The reminder comes in the form of Hollywood Greats, the latest offering from the vaults of Dick Cavett's 1970s TV talk show. This is a really impressive lineup: Katharine Hepburn, Marlon Brando, Fred Astaire, Robert Mitchum, Orson Welles, Groucho Marx, Kirk Douglas, Bette Davis, and others. And if some of them prove less than scintillating, on balance there's still more than enough on these four discs to satisfy even the most ardent star-gazers.

Of principal interest to many will be Cavett's interviews with people like Hepburn and Brando, who rarely ventured into TV land. The notoriously press-shy Hepburn, 66 at the time (1973), is seen checking out the studio and making picky remarks about the rug and furniture before agreeing to do the do right then and there, with no audience; she ends up holding forth for two entire shows (plus bonus material), revealing herself to be witty and sophisticated, as well outspoken, practical, and entirely in charge ("You keep interrupting," she chastens Cavett, "Just shut up..."). Brando, a year removed from The Godfather and Last Tango in Paris, agreed to appear only if he could discuss the plight of American Indians (several of whom are also on hand). Cavett, a sharp, self-effacing, well-prepared host, went along, little suspecting that the whole interview would be an exercise in teeth-pulling, with Brando refusing to discuss his career at all; his dismissal of his stage and screen work as "irrelevant" is laughably disingenuous, considering that were it not for his acting, he wouldn't have been invited on the show in the first place. On the other hand, Davis is grand, saucy, full of stories about Hollywood's Golden Age--everything one wants in a movie star. Astaire is charming, showing that even at age 71 he was a great dancer and good singer. Welles, the man who married Rita Hayworth, had dinner with the pre-Fuhrer Adolf Hitler, and made Citizen Kane, is worldly, erudite, expansive (in every sense--he's twice Cavett's size), and probably the most entertaining of the lot. And Hitchcock is marvelous, showing off his dry, peculiar wit and revealing several tricks of the trade (it took 78 edits to make the 45-second shower scene in Psycho). Bonus material includes several Cavett show promos and a new featurette with him and film historian Robert Osbourne. Scattered throughout the various interviews are clips from some great films, including Night of the Hunter, The Birds, Holiday Inn, a variety of Douglas' movies, and even an obscure Bette Davis item called Watch on the Rhine. --Sam Graham

Product Description
Comedians, politicians and rock stars all graced The Dick Cavett Show stage, but the audience favorites were often the movie stars. And when the guests were greats like Fred Astaire, Bette Davis, Kirk Douglas, Robert Mitchum and Orson Welles, Cavett often devoted the full 90 minutes to them. In the case of Katharine Hepburn, the interview went so well that it required two full 90 minute shows.

This 4-DVD set contains 12 episodes featuring:

Katharine Hepburn, Fred Astaire, Bette Davis, Groucho Marx, Debbie Reynolds, Kirk Douglas, Alfred Hitchcock, Marlon Brando, Mel Brooks, Frank Capra, Robert Altman, Peter Bogdanovich, Robert Mitchum, John Huston and Orson Welles.

Also contains a new Cavett interview conducted by Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne.

Additional bonus material includes:

• Outtakes featuring Katharine Hepburn

• New episode introductions by Dick Cavett

• Original promos for The Dick Cavett Show

Re: Weekly RoundUp 9-12-2006

I think this is the Week I finally pick up Firefly $18.99 at Target. I download the Pilot "Serenity" and enjoyed it, Can't believe Fox showed this ep 11th, only other eps I've seen was the 1st Aired Fox ep and Serenity the Movie.

As for Everything else I Want the 2nd Season of "The Batman" but that will probably Wait. This will be the 1st Season of Smallvile I don't buy I'm gonna wait for the HD-DVD even thou I don't own a player Yet, same think with BattleStar Galactica Next Week. Mr. Lucas I cannot in good conscience buy Star Wars Again, it's curious too that these release Tuesday but I see no reviews on the Web, trying to hide the Subpar originals maybe?

Actually the reviews seem to indicate the SW discs are better than expected and that's caused a number of people to decide to buy them. Right or wrong, you can see it in the SW thread.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 9-12-2006

Does anyone have any connections with Best Buy that confirm or deny that Voltron Season 1 will actually be available tomorrow? The release date is 9/26, so I'm trying to figure out if it was a typo in their ad.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 9-12-2006

Looking over the early ads for next week posted on another site, Target and CC are both advertising Grease (BB hasn't been posted yet). So I guess we'll see it on shelves next week. Incidentally, Target must have an exclusive as their copy is wrapped in a Pink Ladies jacket instead of the T-Bird version.

No connections with me, Patrick! Quite the opposite, actually!

But, It appears as if Best Buy is, indeed, advertising a 9-12 release of Voltron: Volume 1. Everyone else has the 9-26 release date. Don't know any more than that..except to confirm that what you are seeing appears to be true.

EDIT: And I don't know if you've seen it...but if you check out Voltron at bestbuy.com, there's word of an anime sampler DVD if you order on-line.

Apparently, according to TV Shows on DVD, both BB and WalMart have an agreement to bring Voltron two weeks earlier than street date.

Target is also offering a bonus DVD with "The Office" Season 2 featuring what they are calling a "Video Blog of the 'Booze Cruise' episode".

I'll probably be price matching the CC ad at Target to get this feature. I already own the first season, and I don't have space for all of the knick knacks in the exclusive Best Buy set, anyway.

Here's some Target unadvertised new release pricing:
B&B Do America: $14.99
Taps SE: $14.99
Goal!: $19.99
Roseanne S5: $29.99
Ag. Christie Collection (Helen Hayes): $29.99
Natl Lampoon 2-pack: $14.99

Didn't see the Grease SE there...another thread states that Target is having exclusive "Pink Ladies" jacket cover either instead of, or in addition to, the leather jacket version.

I'm pretty sure they are coming out 26-Sep-2006, but Amazon has them listed as available now, so it might be worth a try.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 9-12-2006

In case anyone is wondering, for the Target "Office" sets, the additional bonus feature is authored onto the second disc. The art on the disc is also different from the regular release, including a blurb indicating the presence of the "Booze Cruise" video blog. There is no extra bonus disc bundled with the package.

I picked up Teen Titans season 2 at Best Buy today. It was $15.99.

Luckily, right at that moment, an unconscious Argentinean fell through my roof.

He was quickly joined by a dwarf dressed as a nun.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 9-12-2006

Well, I picked up my Star Wars DVDs at Circuit City. They weren't giving away lithographs at my C.C. They were giving away t-shirts. But, they only had ones available in small, which [Comic Book Guy] the average Star Wars fan has absolutely no use for [/Comic Book Guy]

Oddly enough, my copy of "The Office" Season Two rang up at only $17.99 so people who want "The Office" and have a C.C. nearby might want to try their luck there.
