Re: 'BUFFY' & 'ANGEL' S4/S1 DVD Challenge

The I in Team:

Loved the scene with Buffy standing amongst the soldiers asking questions. Definitely a difference in styles.

Why do TV shows always have to portray the Government as bad? The police, the local gov. and even the “military” are always the bad guys.

Goodbye, Iowa:

The scene in Xanders basement pad was really funny. Poor Giles, always seems out of place.

In the last scene with Willow and Buffy walking through campus, I noticed that Willow is taller than Buffy. Did she grow, or have I just not noticed that she has always been taller?

The viewing/posting has really slowed down this season. I assume it is because all of the new shows that are competing for our eyes.

I know that I'm having that problem. This past week I was only able to watch 3 out of the 5 episodes (A New Man, Expecting, She). But I'll get caught up tomorrow because I have the day off...from both jobs. That's another reason I'm getting backed up, I'm working a 2nd part-time job now. But I am totally committed to seeing this challenge to it's end. I don't care if everyone else bows out, I'm sticking with it til the end. I'm loving watching both shows again, especially now that we are watching them together.

This week we are watching:

A1x14: I’ve Got you under my Skin
A1x15: The Prodigal
B4x15: This Year’s Girl
B4x16: Who are you (on D5 but they really need to be watched back-to-back)

And for those who like to watch ahead:

WEEK OF 10/30/06
B4x17: Superstar
A1x16: The Ring
A1x17: Eternity
B4x18: Where the Wild Things Are
B4x19: New Moon Rising

Happy Watching!

This Year's Girl:

In the scene in which Buffy, Xander and Willow find the demon strung up and splayed open, did anyone else notice the person standing in woods in the background? I guess it was simply a mistake in the filming. A crew member or something.

Who Are You?:

It is really funny watching the scene with Faith in Buffy’s Body in front of the mirror.

The Watchers Council has really turned into thugs.

Re: 'BUFFY' & 'ANGEL' S4/S1 DVD Challenge

Last night I finally got to watch The I in Team and I was wondering something. This is for you Buffy Fans who watched the show when it originally aired. What were your thoughts about the blossoming relationship between Willow and Tara? I originally watched the show in late 2003 during reruns on FX and I pretty much knew all the major story lines so nothing was really all that shocking to me but watching this episode last night I finally realized that that was the episode where we really get a first glimpse of what might be/is going on between Tara and Willow, especially since Willow spent the night at Tara's place. Were you guys curious about that? Or did you already know it was gonna happen from spoilers? Did you care about Willow's sudden change in sexuality? I don't know why but for some reason I was really curious about that last night and I thought to myself about how much I missed out by not watching the show first run and sharing in the conversations about it.

Indeed, it's a crew member with a long stick shaking the tree to create a "breeze." A rather famous goof.

I can see how it could have been missed. I saw this ep two or three times before I noticed it, and now that I've seen it, I can't help but see it every time.

Re: 'BUFFY' & 'ANGEL' S4/S1 DVD Challenge

Shoot, I didn't take notice of that. I might have to check it out again.

Well, I got all caught up over the weekend. I love that two-part episode of This Year's Girl and Who Am I. Buffy being Faith was just classic. And, of course, my favorite scene is when "Faith" meets up with Spike at the Bronze and says how she will ride him til he pops like warm champagne. I think that is the moment that Spike starting crushing on Buffy and I'm not even sure if he knew it. Good stuff.

Re: 'BUFFY' & 'ANGEL' S4/S1 DVD Challenge

A New Man
A great Giles episode, and the moment where he chases Professor Walsh is priceless.

The I In Team
Although I think it is a good episode I was let down by the ending of this. Not because of Adam particularly but because they got rid of a great character in Professor Walsh and I think the conflict between her Riley and Buffy would have been much more interesting in the second half of the season. It is also a bit of an anticlimax after Buffy’s threat to Walsh over the screen.

Goodbye Iowa
Adam was probably my least favourite villain over the course of the seven years and despite him throwing Buffy around etc, I never got the feeling he was a good threat to Buffy. This is partly due to the limitations in make-up which I can accept due to budget, but also because I never thought the guy playing him was that good. Riley is much better here as he finally has something to do other than obsess over Buffy.

This Year’s Girl
A great episode for a returning character and one which we knew was coming eventually. I really like the dream sequences that we see Faith having and the cameos by the Mayor not only make this a great episode but also highlight the general weakness of the villains in Season 4.

Re: 'BUFFY' & 'ANGEL' S4/S1 DVD Challenge

Thanks for all the info!

I just started watching Buffy (my sister's a big fan and lent me all the dvds of both series)

I started series 1 of Angel before Buffy then quickly had to backtrack when I realized episode 3 was a crossover.

Anyone have a quicklist of all the crossovers? I'm doing a disc of each at atime but I don't want to be caught off guard again.

Re: 'BUFFY' & 'ANGEL' S4/S1 DVD Challenge

Welcome to the universe of Joss Whedon, Jonathan, kick off your shoes and stay a spell.

Some of the highlights for me on what i've missed, losing Doyle really upset me, I didn't realize that he left the show so early , but at the same time I was very happy to have Wesly show up, i've always liked Wesly and always felt badly for him because he always had the best intentions and tried to offer words of wisdom but no one wanted any of it.

I've always rooted for the Charlie Brown of any group and he is definately that lol, although from what i've heard he will undergo a change during the series, from bumbling and awkwardly nerdy to tough and mature. Speaking personally I like clumsy and nerdy Wesly, the man cracks me up lol.

The last ep Wendy and I watched depicted Angel's backstory more thoroughly than any ep of Buffy, it was a great ep that deepened Angel's already steep history.

As for Buffy, Adam finally showed up, the worst big bad in the entire series IMO who is no more than a glorified Frankenstein's monster that could be taken out easily with a rocket launcher but conveniantly no one thinks of trying that lol. The relationship between Tra and Willow grows stronger and Spike, well, Spike is just...there. I also agree that the moment Spike begins his quest to have the slayer for himself is when he's talking to Faith as Buffy at the Bronze, having the slayer come on to him in that way took him aback I think and it occured to him that "hey, wait a bloody minute, the slayer is hot, never considered that before!"

That plus she gives him what no one else is willing to...attention.

Re: 'BUFFY' & 'ANGEL' S4/S1 DVD Challenge

Expecting
Nothing really particularly interesting about this episode. It was pretty dull and went nowhere.

She 1/2
Bai Ling’s character seemed like an interesting creation but the backstory created for her was not very good. Still it is worth seeing the episode to watch Wesley and Angel dance. No wonder they changed the end credits for this.

I’ve Got You Under My Skin
Although it can be described as another variation of The Exorcist, this is one of my favourite episodes if only because it is great at misdirecting you. Wesley’s character also finally starts to be developed from here into something a lot more interesting.

The Prodigal
Two great episodes in a row. I love the episodes in which we get to see more of Angel’s backstory and if they ever do a TV film of Angel, I hope they do something if a similar nature where they main story ties in with Angel’s history in some way. Great to see Elisabeth Rohm again and it is a shame she did not get chance to develop her character much more. From what I can remember she is only in a few more episodes. Anybody know why she didn’t continue to be in the series as a semi-regular ??

She is in most of season 2 as well.

Her character's story arc eventually resolves, and that's that. Would have been nice to see her return sometime down the line, but by then Rohm was on "Law & Order".

Re: 'BUFFY' & 'ANGEL' S4/S1 DVD Challenge

I have a dilemma.

As you all know, I have been watching these with my parents who are both in their late 60's. We are now at the middle of season 4. I am worried about how they will react to the Tara and Willow stuff.

Both my parents completely adore the Willow character. She is so sweet and innocent in their minds. I am not sure how they are going to react to Willow's change.

I guess I will be finding out soon how liberal my folks are. It will be interesting to see how soon they figure it out My dad already made a "joke" when Willow and Tara clasped their hands and moved the soda machine. He jokingly said something about Willow being gay. But I could tell he was just joking because of the hand holding. It will be interesting.

Re: 'BUFFY' & 'ANGEL' S4/S1 DVD Challenge

Scott, you will have to keep us updated on how your parents react.

I'm behind again on last week's viewing schedule. I still have one more episode to watch and then I'll be caught up. This working two jobs thing is recking havoc on my TV viewing time!

Last I watched Where The Wild Things Are. I know I'm in the minority in this but I like that episode. Maybe because we have one of the funniest scenes regarding Giles. I don't want to spoil anything but those of you who have seen it know exactly what I'm talking about. hehehehe.

This week we are watching:

A1x18: Five by Five
A1x19: Sanctuary
B4x20: The Yoko Factor
B4x21: Primeval
B4x22: Restless

And for those of you who like to watch ahead:

WEEK OF 11/13/06

A1x21: Blind Date
A1x22: To Shanshu in LA

Quick question, does anyone want to take a pass on the week of 11/20/06 because of the holidays? It doesn't matter to me because I have no life so it will just be another day but I know some people have families and such so their time might be limited that week.

Well, my folks are now "hip" to the new relationship. I havn't yet been able to judge what they think about it. I am sure to find out the first time we actually see them kiss. LOL

Superstar:

I will admit that the first time I watched this episode I was confused. I was thinking to myself “When did Jonathan join the scoobies?”. It was only when I starting seeing his pictures all over and the bar scene that I realized something was amiss. LOL I know, I am slow.

Re: 'BUFFY' & 'ANGEL' S4/S1 DVD Challenge

I am watching it along with Buffy.

I just finished watching the 2 Faith episodes on Angel. I think they sort of went overboard on making the watchers council a bunch of thugs.

I also was a bit confused at Angels reaction to Buffy at the end of Sanctuary. He was pretty harsh to her. But then again she was harsh towards him. I guess this sort of is a way of bringing the whole Buffy/Angel thing to an end. All the chemistry was gone for sure at the end of this episode.

Re: 'BUFFY' & 'ANGEL' S4/S1 DVD Challenge

To answer your question

The Ring
Crap episode, no other explanation for it. The star is for the fact that this is the episode we first see Stephanie Romanov. Other than that it is a pretty pointless episode.

Eternity
I liked this episode a lot though the resolution is over a little quick with the central guest character being glossed over with a couple of lines of dialogue. It could have done with another scene between her and Angel. Still at least we get to see Angelus again if only for a bit. Thought this might have been their way of showing people who hadnt seen Buffy what Angelus was like.

Five By Five and Sanctuary
Faith would have fitted in really well into the series and I suppose the fact that she is not in as a series regular in either Angel and Buffy always seems to make the episodes she appears in stand out. These are 2 fantastic episodes and I am glad they tried to bring Faith's story to some sort of conclusion here otherwise her re-appearances in the both series could have got a bit repetitive. I actually really liked the exchanges between Buffy and Angel and it really drew a line under their relationship.

Where the Wild Things Are

This is a strange episode because although I like the mayhem that ensues, it's the cause of the mayhem that's a bit of a stretch. I know that Buffy and Riley are into each other, but to think that they were having sex for HOURS and hours is difficult to buy IMO.

It's as if the writers knew that a typical Buffy crisis lasts for what, a few hours, and so they needed to come up with a way to have them go at it for that long because they were the cause of that week's adventure, if they had stopped the episode would have ended prematurly.

Where the Wild Things Are:

Loved seeing the face on Willow when watching Giles singing.

It seemed sort of weird that they had a condom commercial in this episode.

New Moon Rising:

Poor Oz. All that work for nothing.

Buffy was being a bit of a bitch to Riley until the end. I know they are trying to show that Buffy is still sensitive to her always falling for the wrong guys, but she didn’t have to take it out on poor Riley.

Actually it can happen. You meet that right person you have loads of chemistry with and spending hours in bed is not a stretch. I've had a few days like that in my life.
