Maybe not so much false as based on a misunderstanding.

The second documentary is "Amazing: Exploring the Far Reaches of Forbidden Planet," twenty-six minutes long with film-specific commentary by Anne Francis (looking as lovely today as she did fifty years ago), Leslie Nielson, Earl Holliman, Warren Stevens, John Carpenter, Joe Dante, John Landis, and various other filmmakers, writers, and film historians.

Sounds to me like there are parts of the doc where some of the participants do what amount to short "commentary tracks" for scenes or parts of scenes. This may have given rise to the assumption that there would be one or more full length commentary tracks.

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November

Mine arrived this morning, 2-disc region 1, must be Canadian it has Planete Interdite under the title on the cover, but it's not distracting, at least I have the film to watch tonight. I've taken a few quickie screenshots, the PQ looks very nice, I'll check out the sound later tonight.

No, that never happens either - there's nothing on the disc that remotely resembles a commentary, "film-specific" or otherwise. The docs are standard fare...

I've looked at a few minutes of The Invisible Boy and that too is excellent; the print is in decent nick, not perfectly clean, but good enough and it's a nice, detailed transfer.

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November

Wow.

I just got this in the mail, and without even seeing how the DVDs look on my screen, I can say this is one of the most impressive DVD packages I've ever seen. I opted for the collector's edition tin, and it is stunning. The online pics don't do it justice. (My wife took my digital camera to work, or else I'd show you what it looks like.)

As for the poster offer, yes indeed, there is one included in the set. The poster is free, you just pay $3.25 for postage. The Robby the Robot is small (Star Wars figure-size) but no less fun to have. The lobby cards are very cool and there are a lot of them, from both FP and Invisible Boy.

Also, I was not aware that the set includes the TCM documentary Watch the Skies, which aired last year I believe.

Top notch work (which is franky what I expect from Warners these days). This might be the best DVD I've seen yet for a single film (not counting movies or TV series).

I don't have time enough to watch all these DVDs!

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November

A couple of questions:
1) Is the poster mail-in offer only available on the Ultimate collection and
2) Are the contents of the DVDs the same on both editions?

Well, I thought of another question. Steve, where did you get those great FP posters and are there larger resolution images of them available?

Johnny I got those posters from here -

They have a massive range of posters from different countries, I wanted to find posters of my favorite films I'd never seen before. Those I posted weren't much larger before I resized them but there are some really huge posters at this site.

A review of the HD DVD version at Digitally Obsessed:

The Cinemascope image looks ravashing in HD, with preternaturally eye-popping color throughout. The picture is extremely crisp and attractive, with no sign of blocking. Edge enhancement is noticeable only during a brief segment in the Krell underworld. Textures are excellent, and black levels are deep and rich. Robby's various shades of silver, grey and black are rendered impeccably, with subtlety and clarity. There is very little to complain about here, other than HD makes Francis' swimsuit during her supposedly nude swim even more obvious.

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November

One question about that Digitally Obsessed review of the HD-DVD version, in one of the tables, it says that the disc is not anamorphic. But it is widescreen, OAR.

I am not up to speed on HD-DVD or Blu Ray in terms of all the techincal stuff. Like most, I am waiting it out as best as I can for a winner. This disc is making that harder! So while the review says it is widescreen, is the "no" in the anamorphic box meaningless? Are the same techincal machinations that make a SD anamorphoc disc not apply to HD hardware? I assume that as it is HD, that is not an issue, it is in it's own native world where the old rules no long apply when it comes to how anamorphic label is applied.

Thanks!

Spot on, Nelson.

In HD, everything is natively widescreen-shaped, so there's no such animal as "anamorphic". Opening a whole new can of HTF worms, anything in Academy format (4:3) gets black windowboxing on either side, or gets MAR'd to fit the 16:9 frame.

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November

Right.

Quote:
One question about that Digitally Obsessed review of the HD-DVD version, in one of the tables, it says that the disc is not anamorphic. But it is widescreen, OAR.

16x9 encoded is native for the HD spec we've adopted. DVD supports both 16x9 and 4x3 encoding. The common way to refer to 16x9 encoded DVD is "anamorphic" but it's actually a misuse of the word... there's nothing "anamorphic" about a 16x9 digital image... it's just 16x9.

Both 16x9 DVD and 16x9 HD are "16x9" in the same way. However, because HD is only that aspect ratio it would be redundant to call it "anamorphic" too since it's understood. Since DVD has 2 choices of aspect ratio, clarifying the "anamorphic" issue is one way to express that a disc is 16x9 encoded rather than just 4x3 encoded.

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November

The HD blows the old SD out of the water. The OAR is probably 2.40:1 or 2.45:1 and there is more picture information on all four sides than the old SD.

I don't have the new SD, so I can't comment on it.

Thanks guys for the clarification on the anamorphic question.

So much praise for the HD disc of this title! This is one of my favorite films, so it will be mighty tempting to consider an HD player.
