So the reports of a commentary track were false then?

I was looking forward to a commentary! Oh well, I suppose it's still worth a purchase.

Maybe not so much false as based on a misunderstanding.

| The second documentary is "Amazing: Exploring the Far Reaches of Forbidden Planet," twenty-six minutes long with film-specific commentary by Anne Francis (looking as lovely today as she did fifty years ago), Leslie Nielson, Earl Holliman, Warren Stevens, John Carpenter, Joe Dante, John Landis, and various other filmmakers, writers, and film historians. |
Sounds to me like there are parts of the doc where some of the participants do what amount to short "commentary tracks" for scenes or parts of scenes. This may have given rise to the assumption that there would be one or more full length commentary tracks.

No, that never happens either - there's nothing on the disc that remotely resembles a commentary, "film-specific" or otherwise. The docs are standard fare...

Re: Warner announces Forbidden Planet for November
A couple of questions:
1) Is the poster mail-in offer only available on the Ultimate collection and
2) Are the contents of the DVDs the same on both editions?
Well, I thought of another question. Steve, where did you get those great FP posters and are there larger resolution images of them available?

Johnny I got those posters from here -
http://www.posterdb.de/detailmovie.php?filmID=1054
They have a massive range of posters from different countries, I wanted to find posters of my favorite films I'd never seen before. Those I posted weren't much larger before I resized them but there are some really huge posters at this site.

Any impressions on the HD-DVD versus SD-DVD? I really really want to pick up the SD-DVD Ult Ed this week but if the HD-DVD is leaps and bounds better...

| is the "no" in the anamorphic box meaningless? Are the same techincal machinations that make a SD anamorphoc disc not apply to HD hardware? I assume that as it is HD, that is not an issue, it is in it's own native world where the old rules no long apply when it comes to how anamorphic label is applied. |
Spot on, Nelson.
In HD, everything is natively widescreen-shaped, so there's no such animal as "anamorphic". Opening a whole new can of HTF worms, anything in Academy format (4:3) gets black windowboxing on either side, or gets MAR'd to fit the 16:9 frame.
