I have been looking to buy a new DLP television, expecially now
that I have invested in a HD-DVD player.

I was going to sit on the sidelines and wait for the new Samsung
LED sets due out this fall. However, the more I hear about this
new technology the more I realize that the first generation sets
may not be perfect. From what I understand, LED may only be
bright enough to accomodate up to 56" televisions.

So, I started looking for the best that's available right now.

Well, just recently, TV AUTHORITY started blowing out their
HP MD6580N DLP TV - HDTV at an incredible price of $2595.

Realize, this is for HP's top-of-the-line 65" DLP television one of the
very first to accept TRUE 1080p input.

Robert Fowkes, one of our Moderators, owns this set. Robert knows
more about first-rate displays (front and rear projection) more than
most, and he feels this is the best display that he has ever owned.

In fact, Robert has talked both Robert Crawford and myself into
purchasing this television through TV Authority.

I'm not saying this to promote an advertiser, but rather to promote
a 65" top-of-its-class television at a price that's rather unbelievable.

Anyone looking for a DLP set may wish to jump on this offer
immediately.

Hey so I've read reviews on cnet and a few other sites the only thing bad about this set is the noise from the fan/color wheel have you or anyone had this problem o and do you know how the refresh rate is for video games/fast moving images?

Hi Will!

I am still waiting for this television to arrive so I can't give a
personal account at this moment.

I have read the same reviews as well, however, realize that those
problems were limited to just a few reviews.

I have been talking with Robert Fowkes, one of our most senior
members of this forum who owns the set, and he has absolutely
no noise eminating from his display.

As soon as I receive my HP I will be posting a review.

My main reason for pushing this television is the unbelievable
price for a 60" 1080p capable display that has gotten mostly
rave reviews to date.

Holy Cow!

They sold out on this set!

I gotta tell you, there were a lot of people talking about the
price of this set on two major forums that included this one.

I know orders were very hot at TVA last week.

Sorry to see they are sold out.

If you live in the NJ/NY area I know that 6th Avenue Electronics
have these sets in stock.

I would also call TVA and ask them if they expect more of these
sets to arrive at the previously advertised price.

I hadn't jumped on this deal YET (still trying to figure out if the 65inch model would fit my space). I called TVA this morning and they said that they will start selling them again, but there were a few issues with the HP warehouse that had to be worked out first. What I take this to mean is that based on a lot of the complaits with the delays in HP shipping these out once they have been ordered TVA is proactively trying to get HP to fix their shipping issues and won't sell any more of their sets until HPs warehouse gets their act together. As soon as this happens they will start carrying the sets again. I was told to check back in a week or two.

I read a review that said a big negative for this display is that it displays 1080p at 30fps rather than 60fps. Does this mean that it drops a 1080i signal to 540i, and then scales it to 1080p? If so, is this noticeable?

Or does it just mean that you get judder on moving objects?

Greetings

A quick note about the Samsung LED based DLP units. At the Jan 2006 CES, the units were first introduced and a noted calibrator noticed that it had problems displaying the NTSC color triangle (from their own spec sheets). They cut off about 10% of the triangle and replaced it with 40% more color space outside the triangle.

It is not known if the production units will have the same color space issues.

For those of us who are not well versed in the terminology of such specifications, would you please explain what the implications of "cut off 10% of the triangle and replaced it with 40% more color space outside the triangle" are?

Greetings

Okay ... a stab at it. The NTSC color triangle represents every color the TV is capable of displaying for NTSC shot material.

Think of it this way ... if the NTSC triangle consisted of 16 million colors and the NTSC camera captures 16 million colors ... the TV will show all 16 million colors.

The problem is ... (Numbers used are simply for illustrative purposes ... to make the concept easier to understand)

The LED DLP as demonstrated ... shows 14.5 million colors of the NTSC triangle and not 16 million.

They try to cover up this point by saying that their "enhance" color triangle can show 20 million colors. (5.5 million more colors than the reduced NTSC triangle) Which it can ... but the problem is ... The NTSC material doesn't have 20 million colors ... it only has its specific 16 million colors.

The HDTV color triangle doesn't show that many colors either ... (somewhere more than 16 million and less than this 20 million number)

So we send an NTSC image with 16 million colors into this TV ... it chops off 1.5 million colors ... ( 16 - 1.5 = 14.5 ) and we end up with 14.5 million. Now show 14.5 million on a display capable of 20 million colors and you still end up with ... 14.5 million colors. The 1.5 million colors chopped off by the LED triangle are gone and not coming back.

An extreme example here is ... if you feed a black and white image into a TV capable of showing 20 million colors ... does the B/W image suddenly have 20 million colors or is it still black and white?

The sales pitch for the Samsung at the CES was 30% more colors than NTSC.

(Well 40% - 10% = 30%)

Hope that is more understandable.

I don't know where you are getting this information from. Can you list a source (and please don't quote someone at AVS without a reference)? Here's what the HP spec sheet on their 1080p microdisplays says:

1080p supported at 24, 30, 60 frames per second

Not only does it handle 60fps but, more importantly, it's ready for 24fps 1080p so that if the Pioneer Blu-ray provides that you can completely bypass the 3:2 (2:3) pull down situation which should result in some amazing film transfers.

If I was one of those who had been eagerly anticpating the Samsung LED DLP, this 10% loss of colors would have come as a rude surprise. As you said, it remains to be seen if Samsung can address this issue with the production units.

FYI: The HP MD6580n Rear-Projection HDTV is reviewed in HT Magazines February, 2006 "The Great 1080p HDTV Face Off " by Geoffrey Morrison.
