Hi Chuck
I am sure that Avatar will be a groundbreaking Blu Ray disc.
Let's hope that his main man Van Ling is on the case.

I wanted to know how interested are you as a filmmaker in 3D filmmaking, and also possibly shooting a full feature in IMAX?
Christopher Nolan: Well, I've never been particularly interested in 3D filmmaking, mainly because you have to wear those goofy glasses, but actually, on a serious note, there are a lot of disadvantages with 3D because of the polarization of the lenses and the glasses, there's very little light that actually comes to the eyes. It's a very dim image, compared with 2D presentations. The grand scale of the cinema screen, the IMAX screen particularly, when viewed in 3D, becomes much more intimate. It shrinks it, effectively, and I think that my interest in cinema, to this point at least, has been in creating something that is larger than life and that speaks of a certain grandeur. 3D is a very intimate thing, and so it's not so much an audience experience as an individual experience. So, it has it's own requirements and demands, and as it develops as a technology I think it'll become more and more interesting, but I think at the moment we haven't yet pushed anywhere near as far as we should or could in terms of creating immersive 2D cinematic experiences. So, I would be interested in shooting a whole film in IMAX. The big hurdle to doing that is um, it's very, very hard to see how you do dialogue scenes, because the cameras are so noisy. And the lenses are so wide, you're shooting this conversation, the cameras go you know, 18 inches from your nose, basically, and it sounds like one of those small portable generators. That's about the level of volume of it. So to just speak over that and to act as if that's not there is very tough. |

Panasonic leads way for 3D in the home
Cameron's Avatar might be first such release in 2010
By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 2/27/2009
FEB. 27 | Panasonic is leading consumer electronics manufacturers dead-set on getting modern 3D into homes as soon as next year.
The company is holding regular 3D demonstrations using a Panasonic Blu-ray Disc player and plasma TV set at its Hollywood headquarters. Panasonic wants to convince studios and rival manufacturers to adopt its technology in order to speed up consumption of home-based 3D hardware.
At this time, the 3D technology enjoyed in theaters with such films as Journey to the Center of the Earth and Bolt is not commercially available for home use. One huge obstacle is that there are no agreed upon terms regarding building 3D-capable TV sets that are compatible with all possible content sources, including existing Blu-ray and/or DVD players.
For the Blu-ray/DVD market today, studios must downgrade their 3D theatrical releases into anaglyph form, with 3D imagery that’s more crude and blurry compared to big-screen technology.
It appears that James Cameron’s Avatar, set for theatrical release Dec. 18, might be one of the first 3D theatricals to be released in modern 3D form on Blu-ray. Panasonic donated 3D camera and TV display equipment for filming, and the company is expected to stay with the project through all of its various phases.
In a YouTube clip posted on Jan. 25, Cameron thanks Panasonic for its Avatar involvement and remarks, “I look forward to working with Panasonic to bring high-quality 3D onto home screens.”
Panasonic’s Hollywood demo involves a modified BD50 model BD Live player, which runs discs at about twice as fast as its usual rate. Also, the model’s picture-in-picture capabilities have been further amplified. The player is connected to a 3D-ready Panasonic prototype plasma TV that was shown off at January’s Consumer Electronics Show.

Shouldn't we be getting a teaser trailer, or is it too soon for that?

Avatar 3D = 1.85:1
Avatar 2D = 2.35: 1
Cameron says he likes 1.85 for 3D.
Discuss.

I'm not sure what they're shooting this thing on, I would imagine each would have it's own unique framing, similar to Cameron's Super 35 films.

Looks like the movie may end up with as much as a 3 hour and 15 minute run time.

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Cameron shows first Avatar clips
at last some footage is being screened.
Quote:
Director James Cameron has unveiled the first glimpse of his highly anticipated new 3D film Avatar at the Cinema Expo in Amsterdam.
Film industry workers were treated to 24 minutes of footage from the movie about a battle on a distant planet.
Despite a media ban reporting on the clips shown, people at the event posted anonymously online that the footage was "jaw-dropping" and "stunning".
Avatar is released in cinemas in the UK and US on 18 December. Speaking at the event, James Cameron said: "Three years ago, I stood up here and said the 3D renaissance is coming and from what we've seen in the business, we can now say it has arrived."
In introducing the footage, Cameron said much of it came from the first third of the film but that there were also glimpses from unfinished portions of later battle scenes involving warring sides clashing over control of the fantasy world Pandora.
'Amazing visuals'
Cast members including Sigourney Weaver, Terminator Salvation's Sam Worthington, and Star Trek's Zoe Saldana were also present to talk about their characters in the film.
Industry newspaper Hollywood Reporter, which was one of only two media outlets in attendance, reported that the clips were met by a standing ovation.
One Twitter user, who was also at the event wrote: "This will change movies forever," while another said: "Footage from Avatar was stunning, literally jaw-dropping. Amazing visuals unlike any before seen, with incredible detail."
An anonymous industry insider told movie website IESB.net: "It makes me want to create a time machine like Cartman from South Park, so that I don't have to wait until 18 December to watch the finished movie.
"If it's anything like the scenes I saw, it's going to be one of the best movies of the decade."
Filmed using a mix of CGI, motion-capture animation and live action, Avatar is Cameron's first feature film project since 1997's Titanic.
It has reportedly cost $300m (£181m) to make.

Pete, it *is* DWW in outer space. At least the scriptment was written as such. And there was a strong emotional core, and plenty of room for characterization and incredible action. Hopefully he still has it. You can never really judge from comments like these...people love anything when they get a "first look" or "insider access".

Re: Avatar (James Cameron)
That scene comes at a point where you are either invested in the characters and believe in them (not as good SFX, but as people) or you aren't. If the SFX and story work, this scene will be fine.
