Gah! MSN's home page just spoiled a pretty major event in the Marvel universe that, while not completely unexpected, I had managed to avoid up until now.

Warning Spoiler! Click to show
Captain America appears to be assassinated in Cap#25 this week!

With regards to that spoiler
Warning Spoiler! Click to show
I had thought/guessed that Captain America was going to be killed at the end of Civil War. I find it weird that Marvel didn't go with what would have been a bigger (and more emotional) finale in the major cross over event of the year and then two weeks later kill him off.
EDIT: I just saw the headline on MSN's site, I highly recommend avoiding the site all together if you want to remain spoiler free about the character in question.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

Since I knew about the spoiler, thanks to the media coverage, I decided to go in early to my LCS to see if I could find a copy (I sort of just wanted to flip through it since I don't normally even buy/read the title). So I show up at lunch time, normally I show up after work, but they were all sold out according to the placard in the shelf space for the issue. I've been going to this store for over 10 years, and have cultivated a business relationship with most of the gang that works at the LCS, so I did luck up, as the store thinned out a little bit, when the manager slipped a copy towards me after I observed him telling multiple callers and casual walk-ins that they were sold out (he even had one caller curse him out for not having the issue in stock when he called), but still managed to put aside a few copies for his long-standing customers who didn't have the title on their pull sheet (I don't have any titles on a pull sheet, but I am pretty regular in what I pick up on a weekly basis). So it pays to have LCS friends looking out for you when they can during these media-driven (slow news day, obviously) shortages of key issues.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

I don't have the issue on my pull list but I fully expect my store to be sold out and unfortunately not holding a copy for me. I'd love to be surprised, but...

Walking Dead #35 came out last week and I was so excited to read it. Then, as I'm checking out, the guy running the shope mentions that they had some problems with the issue where some pages went missing. He checks mine and sure enough, they are gone. So, no zombie-killing newness for me .

Any thoughts on World War Hulk? Based on the story, I'm pretty interested in it. I've seen the preview though, and it is John Romita Jr. doing the art. I am not a huge fan of his and even worse, his Hulk just looks plain bad. I'm leaning towards taking a pass on this one.

World War III is another one I can't quite figure out if I want to get. Correct me if I am wrong - this is basically a war against Black Adam, right? And it fits into continuity with 52? So, in a sense, the story is already over in current continuity? As much as I have liked the Black Adam portions of 52, if the story is already over then I don't feel like I need to read it.

Couple quickies to end this: What's up with the one-page ad DC has been running in their books with what looks like a number of Kingdom Come-ish characters? And (this may be related for all I know) who's going to keep up with Countdown?

*shrug* I'm sure he'll be back eventually but after the way he was utterly emasculated during and after Civil War (or some I've heard), it's probably the best thing for him

Given that they do want to make a movie with this character, I'm sure he will be back sooner or later.

It actually makes me wonder if all the speculation about him being Ronin in the New Avengers is correct. Marvel themselves have been hyping that, so I discounted the possibility at first, but maybe...

One rumor is that the multiverse is coming back to DC, and the characters from Kingdom Come will be sliding on over into the normal DC universe. The restart of JSA has been hinting this in its 3 issues since its relaunch.

Well, Marvel probably will have a second, third and fourth printing (with either a sketch cover or some type of alternate covers) out in a week or two and a trade in a month so you won't have to wait that long.

EDIT: And I forgot the Director's Cut.

I read Captain America #25 today, and I'm amazed at how much better Steve Epting's artwork has gotten in the past 3 years (when I didn't think much of it then).

Pretty much yeah to all of that. As I understand it, the "war" is over very quickly. I think other than 52, it's only four one-shots that are released the same day or something. If you're reading 52, probably get them. If you're not, forget it.

Since 52 has become the main thing I look forward to every week (this from someone almost exclusively Marvel for 25 years, and during the middle of their big event no less), I will definitely check out Countdown.

Re: the MSM story

Warning Spoiler! Click to show
In the Initiative one-shot, Ms. Marvel said he was still alive. There was no way to know if she was telling the truth, telling the truth as she knew it, or lying, but the Ronin thing sounds pretty good. I'll have to go back and read the most recent issue of New Avengers, because I think that's where the new Ronin debuted and there are probably clues laying about. By the way, the wiki entry for Captain America discusses the Ms. Marvel thing and says that Marvel has already "addressed" it in a roundabout way, saying that what she said probably can't be taken at face value. At any rate, Marvel can say Steve Rogers is dead and a new Captain America will take over for good, but I'll never believe that will be permanent. Even if they hold to it for a good, long time, there will eventually be a new regime and an explanation for how he survived.

52 has been a very nutty title as of the past month or so, the plot lines are getting amped up, I guess, for the stretch run to the finale in a few months.

Obit for Marshall Rogers

Wow, I can't believe he's passed away. He was one of my top 3 Batman artists of all time. I loved his Detective Comics run with Steve Englehart in the late 1970's.

RIP, Mr. Rogers.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

Since this is the comics thread, I thought I'd reprint my list of minor casualties from my recent house flood (due to water heater springing a leak):

With the blowers and dehumidifiers finally out of the house, I've finally summoned the courage to take a look inside the boxes that sustained some water damage, and it looks like out of 5-6 boxes with wet bottoms, only 1 box has comics with water damage.

The water damage could not be picked up by a visual test, but if you do the Helen Keller test (let your fingers feel the bottom edge of the comics), you'd feel very, very, minimal wrinkling that comes from water-exposed paper that's been dried. Unfortunately, this long box has some classics from the 1970's and 1980's:

Marshall Rogers/Steve Englehart's run on Detective Comics
Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing (as well as the entire 1st vol.run)
Todd McFarlane's run on Amazing Spider-Man
John Byrne's run on Captain America
George Perez's run on Marvel Two-in-One
Misc stuff from those decades.

The damage isn't bad enough for me to claim them because it's minimal, and I'd forgotten I even had them, plus I flipped through the pages, and they are hard to even read because of the toll that time/humidity has had on them (faded printing on newsprint paper).

So, overall, I'm okay with light scar in my comic collection.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

wow patrick that a shame.

i still have painful flashbacks to 1999 when hurricane floyd rolled through the east coast.

among the tings i lost including the house, was a small section of my comic collection that included a very limited edition of todd macfarlane's spider-man number one that was only given to a small amount of dealers.

i had an amazing #1 that wasnt in great condition but the cover looked
terrific.
only major problem was the the first sheet was misssing.
the first sheet included the first 2 pages and the last 2 pages.

also an amazing #14 that wasnt near mint but was the next level down whatever that is.

paid $80 for it about 10 years earlier.
was probably worth close to 2 grand at the time of it being washed away.
i dont even want to know what its worth now.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

I was weak and broke down and bought all 4 issues of World War III. After reading the issue of 52 that also came out - with the words World War III Begins Here! on the cover - I was actually pretty excited, though I felt the story was pretty self-contained. It was with that excitement that I started reading the first WW3 book, only to find it pretty much told the exact same story as what was in 52! I read the other 3 issues, hoping that the story was going to actually progress past the events in 52 only to be disappointed. It's not that the story was all that bad or anything, but my expectations were so different from what was actually delivered.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

I flipped through all 4 issues of WWIII, and just couldn't make myself buy them (garish artwork, notwithstanding). So I hope just reading 52 #50 will be enough to get most of the story without having to fully read WWIII 1-4.

52 #50 is pretty much all that's needed. The other four books were alright, and it seemed like they used them to essentially do what 52 promised to do in the first place: explain how things ended up like they did One Year Later. It was all done rather quickly I thought.

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

I got a littel side tracked from my comic reading, having joined a book club. that said, I've been reading Gaimans "Immortals". I'm about half way through (finished issue 3 of 7), and erm, kinda dissapointed. Not much is happening. I'm not talking about no fights, I can live with comic books with superhero fights. It's more a case of things being too drawn out. I do have faith in Neil gaiman though, his "1682" (probably got the number wrong ) was a great title a couple years ago, despite being pretty off the wall.

Question, anyone see the "Madman Gargantuan" anywhere? I've had it pre-ordered from Amazon for ages now, and am yet to see it in the shops here. You guys seem to have more reliable comic shops, so I'm curious to see if it's actually hit the stands yet. It's published by IMAGE I think, so all bets are pretty much off I suppose

It's late. I think it was supposed to be out in late February and it keeps getting delayed. I canceled my pre-order and got the Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus instead (which is HUGE). As much as I'd like the Gargantua, I think I can wait until Allred issues cheaper tpb's

I can't believe we are about 5 weeks away from Heroes Con 2007! It takes place on Father's Day weekend (June 15-17) at Charlotte, North Carolina (at the Charlotte Convention Center). A 3-day pass is only $20/person, very reasonable.

I'll be there once again, and expect to be my usual shutterbug self and take tons of photos of the guests and attendees, and of the original artwork that gets produced during the convention for the art auction.

I don't know if anyone here has been following Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness, but I'm liking it better than the original MZ limited series. I think it's because the Marvel zombies were the source of the comedy lines in the original, whereas they are more deadly and serious here, with the comedy coming from Ash. Not that I didn't like the original, but this is really pretty good. One thing from last week's issue:

Re: Comics: The Weekly Rundown (was Heroes Con 2006)

The Spider-Man "Back In Black" event is pretty dumb. Any doubts that it is anything other than a tie-in to the movie are laid to rest by the simple act of reading it. In Amazing, you have Peter wearing the black to symbolize that he is no longer playing nice with the bad guys, so he's going around breaking arms and throwing people out of windows. In the New Avengers, he's cracking jokes and playing poker. In Friendly, he's pretty unconcerned about what has him so anguished in Amazing. And so on. It started off badly by having Amazing be the book where he dons the suit, only to have it come out almost a month after the other books already had him in the suit. And, it's like the writers aren't even meeting to try to get the character on the same page. I came back to comics for Spider-Man last year, and now I barely have any interest left in the character. I'd rather read Ultimate Spider-Man than current continuity, and I never thought that would be the case.

Really? I don;t really read any current marvel or DC books, as I can;t be bothered figuring out the giant crossovers and am pretty much comfortable with downloading them to maybe read when ever.

But this sounds terrible! The "Maximum Carnage" fiasco from a few years (I want to say at least 10 years ago, but it makes me feel reeeealy old to say that...) should of proven that "Gritty Spidey" doesn't work.

I haven't read all of the Ultimate line, but what I have read has mostly been refreshing.

Eh, I don't think the different attitudes in the different Spider-books is any big deal. The first two issues of the Amazing storyline haven't had any gap between them, and they're where he started wearing the black costume. It's probably that that story will have some measure of resolution, where he's less enraged but still wearing the black costume (at least until "One More Day"), after which point the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Sensational Spider-Man and New Avengers stories take place.

Maybe, but the way they were published really hurt the story. I don't know what One More Day is, outside of a brief preview in the Free Comic Book Day book, but I hope it somehow manages to reverse the "Peter Parker unmasked" deal. It would be a cop out, but I just don't think it's turned out to be a good direction for the character.
