Howard the Duck, the outrageous film about a highly-evolved offbeat duck from outer space, finally lands on DVD in an all-new Special Edition! Based on the popular Marvel Comics character and executive produced by George Lucas (Star Wars), the visual effects-filled comedy follows the exploits of a wise-cracking, cigar-chomping duck as he tries to return to his home planet. Featuring brand-new bonus features, a digitally remastered picture and new 5.1 surround sound, Howard the Duck Special Edition is a hidden treasure the whole family can enjoy.

No offense, but I aint buying this....especially with all those 'extra features'...it's gotta be a hoax, Lucas would NEVER officially release this thing, he is far to ashamed of it.

YES! YES! YES!!!!!!!!!!!! Christmas has indeed come early! I saw this thread thinking that maybe someone had posted wondering why it hadn't been made available yet. What a great surprise. This movie is my ultimate guilty pleasure. It's been many, many years since I'd last seen it so I'm definitely ecstatic. Thank you so much for posting this news!!

This is finally getting released? I've only seen part of this but for ~ a $10 price at stores, I'll probably pick it up to see the whole thing.
Does anyone even click on these "My Collection" links?

Re: Howard The Duck On DVD?? Please

About damn time! Now can someone over at Universal please release Matinee in your own damn version. Trying to find the OOP edition at a good price is becoming quite ridiculous these days!

Guilty admission: I've never seen this film, but for its extras, it will be worth it though.

Still, this makes me wish they bestowed the same treatment on Radioland Murders as well (a truly underrated movie if there ever was one).

It's been officially available in Europe for over a year. Other parts of the world even longer.

Also, this is a Universal film. Not a Lucasfilm-owned one (like Star Wars & Indy). Lucas does not have the final say over Howard.

That said, I truly hope this isn't a hoax. I've been waiting for a R1 version since forever.

Director Willard Huyck freely talked about the film in the the 2006 documentary Boffo! Tinseltown's Bombs and Blockbusters. (Not that great of a documentary, BTW.) I don't see why they wouldn't release it.

Besides, info via Mr. Lambert is extremely reliable.

...but I certainly couldn't agree more about that Lambert character! If that news originated almost anywhere else, I'd be looking for an April 1st release date or something...

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

Re: Howard The Duck On DVD?? Please

DVD Empire has it up for pre-order. Disappointed that Criterion bypassed this: There were many political (Hollywood style) implications in its release. Legend has it that Frank Price and Lew Wasserman had a fistfight in the Black Tower over the whole debacle.

Yes. I remember THE TODAY SHOW doing a segment on the making of the music video. Even though MTV never aired it, I hope it makes it onto the DVD.

Music Videos were one of the primary ways of marketing films in the 1980's, even more than theatrical trailers. Yet, they are routinely left off of DVDs.

Re: Howard The Duck On DVD?? Please

"WOW.

This may not answer THAT question, but I have a hunch that given Lucas's involvement and the featurette titles, Laurent Bouzereau produced these. He may not get into as much of the release controversy/infamy as some of you might hope. This is just speculation on my part.

Lea Thompson is probably generous enough to be interviewed, even though she recounted her emotional state after its release in an interview for the 2006 dvd of "Some Kind of Wonderful".

Hope this helps.

Re: Howard The Duck On DVD?? Please

I might pick this up. I didn't mind the first two thirds. The last 1/3 is what really killed it for me. I thought the special effects for Howard were pretty good for the time; however, I would have preferred a full length animated film with the character, rather than live action. I think it would have worked better.

When you have to shoot...shoot. Don't talk!

Re: Howard The Duck On DVD?? Please

The Dark Overlord is probably one of ILM's best and most terrifying monsters. Kind of a shame they don't do Go Motion critters like that anymore. The FX still hold up pretty well compared to some CGI monsters.

When Marvel has finished adapting their roster of big guns into movies, maybe they will revisit Howard and be more faithful to the comic book.

Re: Howard The Duck On DVD?? Please

I never thought we would see the day!

I CANNOT wait for this. As a child of the 80s how in the hell could I even think about passing this up!?

The Dark Overlord terrified me as a child but I haven't see Howard the Duck since then. I do remember a smoking hot Lea Thompson, though.

Oh man ... this sucker will be mine!

Universal, please release Streets of Fire on Blu-ray.

You don't suppose Howard will now be holding a walkie-talkie in some scenes, do you!

Wait. No! That's Spielberg.

Maybe Howard won't shoot first. [Lovitz] Yeah. That's the ticket. [/Lovitz]

I think something along the lines of painting the sky and changing the front of the title cards.

He'll be all CGI now with lightsabres!!!! "celebrate the love" will play at the end. Those changes should make it a blockbuster
