Most likely because they racked up the framing on the previous, full-screen edition in an effort to perhaps balance the composition of medium shots.

Re: New Kubrick SE's
I'm not really too excited about some of these SEs after seeing the new compositions, somehow the lack of space in the frame drains away the energy.Beaver also seems to indicate the FS versions were sharper as well.
On the other hand, the extras are way better...

Re: New Kubrick SE's
Are these getting the remastered treatment in the UK? If the shorter version of The Shining will be available on DVD, I might want to pick that up out of curiosity... considering it's a Kubrick-sanctioned version of the film and I've bought everything else he's made at least twice (and five or six times for 2001), I can certainly justify spending the money on it.

There's no news in the UK yet of any new releases, either SD or HD. ;(

The films and extras are being, or have been, recertified by the BBFC, so although they haven't been offically announced, it's almost a certainty.

Re: New Kubrick SE's
I wasn't planning on getting these right away (especially with Christmas coming up and everything) and I sorta avoided this thread for fear that it might entice me.Well, I started reading it last night, and in a couple of days I'll be receiving a box from Amazon containing the new box set plus "Lolita", "Barry Lyndon" and the 2-disc "Strangelove" release from a couple years back that I never got around to buying.
I never got the first, pre-EWS white box set but I do own the remastered blue box and I'll be keeping that to compare the AR differences and to have the option of choosing between them.
But I am looking forward to having a Kubrick marathon in 16x9. I might watch "Killer's Kiss", "The Killing" and "Paths of Glory" on my 4x3 set over tonight and tomorrow then continue on the 16x9 set starting with the Criterion "Spartacus" and continue chronologically.
edit: I was under the impression that "Barry Lyndon" and "Lolita" were new anamorphic transfers but I just read that they're the identical discs. I'm gonna hold off on this. When I can get everything from "Lolita" to "Eyes Wide Shut" in anamorphic widescreen I'll take the plunge.
Don't you ever, EVER compare me to "Family Guy," you hear me Kyle? Compare me to "Family Guy" again and so help me, I will kill you where you stand!
Do you have any idea what it's like? Everywhere I go: "Hey Cartman you must like 'Family Guy,' right?" "Hey, your sense of humor reminds me of 'Family...

DVDBeaver has caps from the HD version of A Clockwork Orange and it looks like they cropped it to 1.78:1 instead of the proper 1.66:1. The DVD is 1.66:1 anamorphic widescreen, though. Can anyone confirm this?Tell The Weinstein Company to release Richard Williams' animated masterpiece The Thief and the Cobbler on DVD in Panavision widescreen and uncut! The DVD is properly 1.66:1 anamorphic, as are the HD-DVD and BD releases. DVDBeaver.com recently posted this on their site:
"DVDBeaver has made an error. We initially indicated the HD of A Clockwork Orange had an aspect ratio of 1.78. It is closer to its theatrical of 1.66:1. "

Re: New Kubrick SE's
Heh, the local Best Buy and Barnes & Noble didn't have the box set, but Target did.Just from skimming over the discs, the new remasters look absolutely stunning. 2001 is a big improvement as it loses the ugly DVNR that was on the '01 disc. WB did a fantastic job on the 2001 remasters and Eyes Wide Shut (still holds up well for a 2000 DVD), so I don't think they're as obviously better. The Shining looks almost like a new movie, too.
The covers are awesome, too... the covers shown online are the slipcovers to the individual discs. 2001 just has HAL's "eye" on the front, EWS has Harford's mask, ACO has Alex's eye. Although, The Shining is the same.

Anyone else having trouble finding this thing? The Best Buy doesn't have it, and Amazon is listing a 5-6 week backorder... what the heck is going on here?

Re: New Kubrick SE's
Warner has been having major database issues for their distribution since August. This is just the latest result of that.

Hey Patrick, how much was Target charging for it? The Target price isn't in the Weekly Roundup....

Re: New Kubrick SE's
Target had it for $59.98. Re: New Kubrick SE's
My local Best Buy had the box for $54.99... naturally I jumped on it.
My only (and this is really minor) complaint so far is the loss of those gorgeous slipcovers gracing the single editions. I especially liked the 2001 slipcover...

I noticed no Kubrick sets and quite a few people leaving Best Buy empty handed. A multi-billion dollar company with a major release on their hands and they still can't get it right.

It's been sporadic... Here in Birmingham, Alabama, there are five Best Buys within 20 miles of each other. Only one got the sets in and stocked today.
I'm really wondering if there's not something bigger at play here, given the widespread reports of this being hard to find—not just a Best Buy problem. I got lucky.
By the way: All I've had a chance to see tonight is "The Shining." The new featurettes on "The Shining" are wonderful. Taken together they're like having a whole other hour-long documentary in addition to Vivian's. Getting to hear some of Wendy Carlos' unused music is a treat, and hearing other filmmakers talk about one of Kubrick's most maligned films is enlightening.

J&R in NYC didn't have the box, or the seperate "FMJ".It may be some kind of Warner issue: a few weeks ago J&R did no have the standard new "Deliverance", but they did have the hi-def versions

Re: New Kubrick SE's
I went to a Best Buy here in LA around noon. They said they sold the ten setsthey got as soon as they opened, and none of the others had it listed in stock. None of the Borders stores in LA has it in stock either. Circuit City lists it as backordered. What a mess. I would have bought it today, as well as Lolita and Barry Lyndon, most likely. Instead, it's completely possible I'll never get around to buying any of them. I'm tired of the wild goose chase for things the day they come out, but don't want to order from Amazon and have them arrive looking like they were run over by a truck.

What? I have ordered a TON of stuff from Amazon and never, ever had a problem. Does your mailman leave your packages in the street?

No worries, mates.

I was waiting for the Kubrick reviews, and now I'll have to wait for amazon to have it in stock.

That's exactly how I feel. Ever since Deep Discount started mailing out their box sets in jiffy bags I thought it would be safer to purchase one at the store. However Best Buy never stocks anything anymore. It didn't use to be like this about 5 years ago, and I used to spend quite a bit there on new release Tuesday. You go to any Best Buy on Tuesday after work hours and you'll be guaranteed seeing quite a few lost souls wandering the DVD aisles empty handed.

Re: New Kubrick SE's
Picked this up as well, going to a really good weekend, but no Lolita, or Barry Lyndon to be found in my local worst buy. I wonder if we have the possibility of getting a deluxe later of those two titles in the future since they were not included in this set. I was hoping that MGM would get off of there asses and do something with the three titles that they own as well by now. They both could have fit nicely into this, actually when this was announced I was hoping for a much bigger boxset, because WB has included Dr Strangelove before, and now that Sony is a controlling interest in MGM the idea that we could have gotten everything except Spartacus in on set would have been great . I know that would have cause conflicts on the Hi Def front. WB supporting both and Sony Not.I just hope that someone gets around to doing the 3 that MGM owns with the same care that these seem to have on them.
And as a side note, love the minimal cover art on the boxset , just wish they would have went with thinpacks, starting to run out of room.

One of the sister-companies of the DVD Quality Control company I work for is a packaging plant. They have thousands upon thousands of Warner titles waiting shipment, but because Warner's new software has been a disaster since it launched in mid-August they can't do anything with them. Warner can't tell them which stores in the US to send them to.
Trust me, Warner would love to fix this. They've been working on it for two months. THAT'S how big of a FUBAR this software change was.

Being that the new FMJ is not being released individually, that may explain why you didn't find it in the store

So after running around to three different stores last night, it finally turned up at a Best Buy...although buried in the sci-fi section, not under new releases (as the singles were), drama, box sets, etc. Apparently their computer decided that since the first title listed in the set is "2001", that's obviously where it should go. But the important thing is that I found it.
Ironically, after all of that, by the time I got home and ate dinner, I passed out. So all I can say is that the box looks pretty, which indeed it does. Thinpaks would have been a nice space saver, and I love the cardboard slips on the singles and wish those could have somehow been included, but if that's all I can find to complain about, that generally means someone's doing a pretty good job!
