At long last!

And before anyone gets too bent out of shape, DVD Times is reporting single-disc reissues of Lolita and Barry Lyndon the same day. We've known for a couple of years that they weren't getting the two-disc treatment right now.

The boxed set sounds pretty lame. What's the point of putting out a Kubrick boxed set without Lolita and Barry Lyndon? Hopefully it's a mistake and they are included, but I'm also miffed they won't be getting extras (or likely won't). I believe Jan Harlan mentioned that they have a bunch of interviews with cast and crew members that were recorded for the Life in Pictures documentary but didn't make the final cut. Would've been nice to see some of that material surface on extras for Lolita and Barry Lyndon.

Warner made it clear a year and a half ago that Barry Lyndon and Lolita would not be getting the two-disc treatment. Surely it has to do with lower sales and fewer available supplements. They are being repackaged for release individually, but not in the box because many people who own one of the original boxed sets will not want to replace those two titles just to get rid of their snapper cases.

Has it been determined if Eyes Wide Shut is going to be the uncensored version. I can't remember?

I am presuming/hoping that LOLITA and BARRY LYNDON will get anamorphic treatment, too.


If they can do it with STRANGELOVE, which was essentially fullscreen, I guess those 2 should present no problem

Wow! Warner spoils us rotten, don't they? I totally gave up hope on a SD special edition release of Barry Lyndon.

I'm probably only going to buy Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut, and maybe The Shining -- I held off on the last two hoping for SEs, and here they are! Sweet!

I'm going to be flat broke by the end of that month! October is the most ridiculous month of DVD releases I've ever faced.

This is one exception where I'll be purchasing the box set on release day and hanging on to my old SK Collection as well. Love the new cover art and am very excited to see the new transfers of these great films!

I just wish that Lolita received more attention. Surely, it's a more significant (and better) film than "Eyes Wide Shut". As far as I'm concerned, it's one of Kubrick's best and highly underrated. A Two-Disc S.E. would have been much welcomed. But if the new single disc releases offer improved transfers and/or extras, I'll pick them up as well. These are among the greatest films to ever grace celluloid.


I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that MGM uses this promotional opportunity to reissue their three unsung Kubrick masterpieces as well: The Killing, Killer's Kiss and most importantly (needed) Paths Of Glory.

Right.

I do wish WHV had not changed the fonts on the cover art. Kubrick was obsessive about his fonts. He didn't arrive at the proper font easily. It took months, sometimes years, of trial and error before he matched the font to the title. He attributed the success of CLOCKWORK ORANGE in part to its font, and now WHV changes it.

Unfortunately Ian, Kubrick destroyed the footage after editing it from the films, If I have heard correctly.

And that cover for 2001 is terrible.

If i remember correctly , Sony has some control in the MGM decision, being part owners, and with Fox distributing MGM disc what a convoluted mess, but the possibility of a second Kubrick box set containing Dr Strangelove, The Killing, Killers Kiss , and dear god some one do a complete restoration two disc set for Paths of Glory with Kirk Douglass commentary, please! Withe the companies involved, i can see a high price point for the Blu releases, but it is the tie in that might motivate them to make this happen.

I will definatly buy the new set and maybe the single disc versions of Lolita and Barry Lyndon if they are in the "keepcase" I detest snapper cases! I will also hold onto my old Kubrick remastered set so I have Shining in 1:33:1 etc. Warner Bros does a great job generally with the artwork for the DVDs they release using oriingal poster artwork when they can. I know some of the artwork and or fonts have been changed but I really do like the new cases even 2001.

My question is will we get the orignal WB logos at the start of each film not that horrible one with the badly done score (No offense just usually sets up the viewer for something happy I think) I love the old 70's early 80's WB logos. Esp the one Saul Bass did. I guess We'll see At least 2001 is MGM so that logo will stay in tact.

I think Warner Bros. does a much better job than other studios such as Sony who wrecks more interesting DVD cover art for Photoshop from Hell work check out Flatliners for example Yuck! Still WBs tries to use original Poster artwork which is very cool.

Which is a shame, as he was highly articulate when discussing the films he liked. His interview on the Ace in the Hole DVD is excellent.

well then if not a commentary, how about an interview companion piece, i know that his health is a problem. but he is still functional, just going over the insert in the original MGM release of it, he thought that it was so " important that even if the didnt make money, he still needed to make the film" that says a lot about Paths of Glory !

Recently I saw another MGM film from around the same time as 2001 that opened with the same unique blue-lion MGM logo that 2001 opens with. I can't remember what the film was at this point. I always thought only 2001 had that blue logo, but I guess some other films at that time used it as well. If anyone remembers any others, please chime in.

JeffMc: I think either "The Strawberry Statement" or "The Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart", two MGM films from around that time, had the blue lion logo. Maybe both of them?

Wikipedia says "Grand Prix" was the only other movie besides "2001" to use it, but everytime I've seen "Grand Prix" it started with the standard roaring lion, including the DVD. I know I've seen the blue logo somewhere else. Maybe it was "The Subject Was Roses"?

Yes, Bill, you are right - "THE SUBJECT WAS ROSES" is the video I recently watched and it definitely opened with the blue lion logo. So wikipedia is wrong.

I have a vhs copy of THE STRAWBERRY STATEMENT that I'll check out later to see what logo it opens with. I don't have "STANLEY SWEETHEART" and have never seen "GRAND PRIX".

EDIT: I just checked my original MGM-UA Video vhs release of "THE STRAWBERRY STATEMENT" and it opens with the standard roaring lion.

Me too. Considering how common it is to release multiple edits of a single movie these days, releasing both widely-distributed, Kubrick-approved versions of The Shining in a 2 or 3 disc set seems like a no-brainer to me.

I've always been meaning to break down and order the R2 disc, but for various reasons I never get around to it.

The pie fight does still exist on 35mm, at the BFI. I saw it in May. Although it is very good, I do think the film is better without it.
