I tried, tried, FOUR times to watch this without being bored to death and it just didn't happen. The jokes were poor, the allusions obvious, and the anti-middle class message just more of the same all over again. I get it, but am perhaps, too jaded to be entertained. Tati is much better at this.

I'm just speaking for myself of course but if I were in your shoes I'd never watch anything new either.

Looking at our lists it appears I enjoy more of the "new" viewings than you do. We spoke about this earlier but 373 and 313 would make me want to skip any new viewings as well. I know your ratings are because you don't want to see them again and perhaps you somewhat enjoyed some of these titles but still....

However, if I reviewed films the same way you did then I'd probably have a lot more on my list. Lifes too short to keep rewatching things so for 90 minutes I can try something new. More than likely I'll never watch that certain film again but it was still nice seeing something new and you never know because it could still end up being one of your favorites.

Joe and I recommended five films to each other last year (12 this year) and he put off PATHS OF GLORY until the final day of the year because he really wasn't interested in seeing it. Since he enjoyed the film so much I'd ask him if he's happy he finally saw it and perhaps if he wished he had watched it earlier in the year instead of watching I WAS A TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN two times. Out of our recommendations this year I believe he loved ON THE WATERFRONT and PATHS OF GLORY so I'm sure he wishes he had seen these earlier in life instead of watching some crap film over and over. Of course, perhaps I'm wrong but I've got twelve more films to recommend him this year so we shall see.

I gave him EAST OF EDEN and he gave me LURED. I think it's better we watch these rather than watching TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN for the 20th time. One of us might like TEENAGE more than the film picked but we'll just have to wait and see.

Well I think you miss my point somewhat. I do watch a lot of new films, about half of my viewings, just because it is worth it to me going through the garbage to find the gems. I doubt if I'll ever find another The Apartment or Rear Window, but you never know. I did see some wonderful films for the first time this year, and added them to my dvd collection if they were available, though they didn't exactly break into my top 100. Films such as The Most Dangerous Game, The Mark of Zorro, Throne of Blood, High & Low, How to Steal a Million, The Mask, Grosse Pointe Blank, Chocolat, Memento, Vanilla Sky, The Great Gildersleeve, The Devil & Miss Jones (not the porno flick), Footsteps in the Dark, The Major & the Minor, The Exterminating Angel and many others. The fact that I had to watch tons of crap to get to such great films, stuff like L'Age D'Or, Fashions of 1934, The Sea of Grass, The Snake Pit, The River, The Pride & the Passion, L'Avventura, Shock Corridor, The Masque of Red Death, Au Hasard Balthazar, Arabella, Kill!, The Night Porter, Dawn of the Dead, The Marriage of Maria Braun, Doctor Detroit, Sid & Nancy, Withnail & I, Trust, Naked Lunch, Detroit Rock City, Ratcatcher, Requiem for a Dream, The Hours, The Truth about Charlie, and hundreds more, is a small price to pay, given that I'll never have to watch those latter again, and can enjoy the former many more times. But if I'd had to give up rewatching some of the greatest movies ever made to do so (movies like Frankenstein, M, The Thin Man, Top Hat, Bringing Up Baby, Ninotchka, The Philadelphia Story, Casablanca - ah hell it would take way to long to give even a small sample of these classics), then I'd say forget it.

We're just going to have to agree to disagree, cause I can't for the life of me figure out how you can watch some great film for the first time such as Gunga Din, Bambi, The Seventh Seal, Laura and Rashomon and look forward to not having to rewatch those again, so you can better spend that time seeing other films you've never seen before like White Chicks 2, Smallpox Returns, Frankenstein's Great Aunt Tillie Comes Back, Manos the Feet of Fortune, and Queen of Kong Island.

Like I said, I like both watching new films and rewatching old ones, but if I could only do one of those for the rest of my life, it would definitly be rewatching the films I love. I might miss out on a few hidden gems out there, but the other way around I'd be missing out on over 1000 films I know I love.

I agree, George. I love to rewatch films that I know I like(the first two films on my 2006 list are THE MUMMY(1932) and THE INVISIBLE MAN). I generally tend to watch films that I'm pretty sure I'll like, which is why there is such a dearth of * and ** star films on my 2005 list.

I've wanted to do this for a while, but I think I arrived here too late to participate. I'm only 21 right now, so most of mine will probably be first viewings. But, I have promised myself that I won't deprive myself of re-watching some of my favorite films whenever the mood strikes me.

Also, as I'm sure some of you noticed, I'm keeping track of the films I own but haven't watched yet, as well. It's been a bad habit of mine, obviously, so I'm really hoping to get that number down this year. Yeah, right.

comments: i am definitely not getting this director's popularity and this movie was one of the worst. it felt like a low-budget college project. i know the actors were new, the dialogue was mostly improv, etc ... but sheesh ... i really had to force myself to finish it. thank gawd it was only an hour'ish long.

comments: interesting story, if not a touch contrived here and there. nice acting by the leads. loved the melancholy feel (and soundtrack).

comments: one of the most interesting doc's i've watched in a while. that guy was definitely a little loose in the head, but i don't think he was flat-out crazy. without question a passionate person. while i got the feeling herzog definitely treated him with respect, i felt his view was a little one-sided (leaning towards 'he's a nut' territory).

comments: possibly my least fave studio ghibli release so far. i know miyazaki didn't direct this one, but it just didn't have the charm or magic i usually associate with ghibli's work. the story didn't hold my attention ... i really felt like i was just watching a regular movie.

comments: man, i so wanted to give this a b. but, besides stratham, there really wasn't much to this movie. stupid plot, lousy supporting cast and crappy effects. nonetheless ... there was something entertaining about it. maybe this will get my guilty pleasure of the month award.

comments: a nice study of the last days of an assasin getting alzheimers. nice gritty look to the movie and a great portrayal by the lead. it takes a left-turn at the end, but it worked very well.

comments: a first viewing (i think) of this director's work. i almost gave this an A rating because i really enjoyed the one-on-one scenes, with a lot of truth, emotion, and credibility behind them. but, i dunno ... something just held me back a touch. it did take me a little while to get used to the director's style and camerawork.

comments: i've seen this many times and i still enjoy it like it was a first viewing. ben kingsley (one of my all-time faves) does a wonderful job and i just wanna give the young actor (lucas something?) a great big hug ... he's so darn cute and loveable. great supporting cast, a fantastic story, nice narrative (not there to explain the movie) ... this movie is just great.

comments: i liked this one much more then i thought i would. visually just amazing ... with wonderful colors, amazing animation, and great character design. i caught myself smiling a lot. the story was great, the characters were great ... a standout film for me.

comments: this was tough to think about. i thought there was going to be more action, but it ended up being dialog heavy. however, a lot of backstory and character-fleshing turned out to be a good thing. i enjoyed "dissolving" myself into the movie ... but it did drag a touch. overall a better balance of action and drama would have helped ... but i still enjoyed it the more i thought about it.

comments: not sure how i heard about this one, but it ended up in my netflix queue. an "ugly-duckling" story, but not much else. i didn't really care for any of the characters, or the circumstances they found themselves in. really, i had to force myself to finish it.

comments: second viewing. still found it enjoyable. the adolescent lovey-dovey thing was a little weird, but i can see it being relevant to this part of their lives. superb effects, magical story ... it's all good.

comments: director park has more issues then a magazine rack ... and that's a good thing. this was an enjoyable, trippy, and disturbing ride. everything (story, gore, violence) worked and was balanced. i liked this one even better then oldboy.

comments: almost gave it a B, but then i realized just how much i enjoyed this film. i think someone else said that you really felt like you were right there ... experiencing not only the fall of hitler and his dreams, but of the third reich as a whole. if it is at all possible to feel compassion for someone like hitler, then this is the movie that does it, and does it well.

comments: i had a bit of trouble keeping all the characters straight (not very many closeups), but i really liked the world-within-a-world thing, with various characters moving in and out of the story. if i ever get to beijing, i may just have to check out this place ... just so i can do the holding-up-the-leaning-tower thing.

comments: totally had a good time watching this. the way the movie "humanized" kong was great ... i especially liked the endearing scenes between kong and watts. i guess the fact that i'm talking about kong like he was a real actor says something about how much i liked him. for the most part, the effects were amazing (especially the t-rex fight), the supporting cast fine (no big deal, but good enough).

comments: i'm not a big spike lee fan, but this one wasn't bad (pretty mainstream for him though). as usual, he had to toss in his social commentary stuff (which threw me out of the picture), but good acting, some funny lines, and a neat ending made it worthwhile.

comments: years ago i saw this in the theaters and didn't think much of it. but with the cult status it now has, i wondered if i didn't just miss something. i guess not, but i did enjoy it more this time around ... probably because i work in just such a cube farm environment. a few good laughs, but nothing special.

comments: pretty sub-par for an animated feature. flat voice-acting, average cg, and a standard by-the-book story didn't really add up to much. worth a rental but that's about it.

comments: tough call on this one (originally rated a D), but i decided i liked the acting and i felt that i could see how a man could react the way wilkinson's character did under those types of circumstances. but i just couldn't like any of the characters, and the story was just kinda ... i dunno ... stupid.

comments: woody at his most allen-esque. loved his little quips and neurotic mannerisms. more wonderful dialog as well. this is probably one of my favorite woody movies, and definitely one of my favorite woody performances.

comments: as a fan of the video game genre, this theatrical interpretation succeeded big time. the cadence of the dialog, the action, the visuals, etc ... it all worked really well. unfortunately, the goofy story angle also followed. this movie is serious eye candy.

comments: going into it, i had no clue what this movie was about .. i think that helped. those loud noise/quick flash scenes were annoying. but, i really enjoyed the story, it put on a different spin which i bought.

comments: i'd heard a lot of good stuff about this movie, but it didn't quite blow me away. i think what saved it for me was the performances (loved william hurt's performance), and the thought about what a man would do to save himself and his family. but the story itself seemed pretty standard. definitely worth a video rental though!

comments: another good woody flick, but definitely more mainstream then his usual "talky" stuff. good acting, standard thriller plot, but a neat twist at the very end.

comments: not sure what all the hub-bub was about, but i found this movie rather monotone in both acting and storyline. it was a long movie, but it seemed long, but i can't see how they could have trimmed it too much more. besides, didn't i already see this when it was called the english patient?

comments: i'm not sure why, but i just loved this movie. visually, i loved the desert photography. the sense of angst the soldiers were feeling came across just right, and i just bought into the whole thing. great flick!

comments: stamp gives a stand-out performance of a man doing what he has to do, trying to survive, and better himself ... definitely a "means-justifies-the-end" kind of guy. great supporting cast definitely helped make this movie feel real, without being stereo-typical or condescending.

comments: before the wach-however-you-spell-their-name made the matrix, there was this gem. i've seen this several times, and it never fails to inspire and entertain. i can see the beginning of the creative camera moves that have become their signature. my fave jennifer tilly role, and gina is just africa-hot. great story, good performance by joe pantalone (sp?) ... just an excellent pic from start to finish.

title: the 40-yr old virgin

comments: seen it before. a great r-rated commedy. funny and heart-warming at the same time. except for the obligatory "conflict" near the end, a near-perfect story. keener hits every note just right, and the supporting cast is spot-on.

comments: saw this back in feb, but just couldn't pass up another chance to hang out with these guys. as wallace would say, "a crackin' good movie".

comments: second viewing, still found it entertaining. a nice "humorous" spin on the whole zombie genre.

comments: believable characters, living in real situations. wonderfully quiet performances, even amy adams' frenetic character hits the right notes. unfortunately, the story felt a bit off though ... not sure why. definitely worth a rental.

comments: al's a pretty persuasive guy, and the hard-data he presents seems pretty solid. it was a tad heavy-handed, but not so much that it bothered me. some of the concepts were nicely explained using layman's terms, which i appreciated. he's definitely passionate about global warming ... that's for sure.

comments: maybe if i hadn't already seen the lotr trilogy, i would have rated this better ... but it just didn't hold up as well. the effects were sub-par, the story was average, the child actors a bit out of their league, and the witch was just annoying.

comments: boy, this one surprised me. it had that british-gangster-flick feel, some over-the-top violence, creative camera moves, and a nice frenetic pace. it was a bit uncomfortable having those kids in danger, but i think that added to the overall chaos of the movie.

comments: seen before, but it's been a while. walken gives an enjoyable nuanced (if that's possible) performance as the sergeant, and broderick does a great job in the lead role. enjoyable dialog puts it over the top.

title: the city of lost children

comments: first viewing. one of the most visually innovative movies i've seen in a while. in terms of just plain ol' creativity it definitely kept up pace (and maybe even surpassed) delicatessan. some really nice performance from the children, especially the girl lead.

comments: heck, i almost gave this an f, but it did keep me somewhat interested until the end. now i know i'm not the most "deep thinker" when it comes to movies, but i must have clearly missed the boat on this. i cannot understand where all the praise for this movie came from. uninteresting characters, and a story with a neat setup, but no payoff ... not even an inferred one.

comments: i've seen this many times since i was a kid. everytime it comes on tv, i watch it (this time in hd). i have no clue why i enjoy this movie so much. but honestly, those little robots have more personality then anything lucas can dream up. the ending shot with dewey watering the plants gets me every time.

comments: i'm shocked i'm giving this a b, but i went in with little expecation and came out pleasantly surprised. did i jump a few times? yep. was it gross and over-the-top? yep. was the acting horrible? not really. so, all in all, a decent jumper flick.

comments: ugh, i was pretty much irritated (not sympathetic) with the character after the first five minutes. twenty minutes into it, seeing the same thing just drove me crazy. i would have rated it an F, but since i didn't finish it i guess n/a is more appropriate.

comments: as an anime fan, i wasn't disappointed in this tri-fecta. innovative and differing anime styles converge to create three wonderful short-stories by some of anime's leading figures.
