Veronica Mars Season 2

Yeah, I remember it now. I didn't watch Buffy, so the scene had no significance outside of the show for me.

New episodes are set for Jan 18, 25, Feb 1, and Feb 8. All of those are up against new episodes of LOST unfortunately... arrrrgh.

I think the next new episode (2.11) is actually airing on Jan. 25, not Jan. 18 as previously scheduled. UPN has moved it back for some reason.

Anyone get tickets to the texas marsathon? They're getting to see the 11th episode of the season a few days early. Man, I'd have liked some of those tickets...

I am going to the VM screening in Austin this weekend. FYI, it's not really a "Marsathon" anymore but merely a sneak preview of 2.11 plus some other VM highlight clips, and a Q&A panel discussion with Rob Thomas, Kristen Bell, Enrico Colantoni and Jason Dohring. Now that UPN has moved 2.11 back to Jan. 25, I'm especially glad I'm going to get to see it early.

Kinda sucks about the marsathon being changed, but still would be nice to meet the cast *drools.*

Are these marathons happening all over? I'd love to see what I have missed at the beginning of the season.

Yes, one scene, and it kicked ass.

Are there screen captures or clips of these two in action?[

The next new episode was pushed back because they're behind in filming.

I personally don't mind having to wait the extra week because we're going to have more breaks anyway, and getting another one over with is fine with me, but it's going to be hard to avoid spoilers for the episode since it'll be shown 10 days before it airs. I could take 3, but 10 is ridiculous.

Like I said, it's not really a Marsathon anymore. This is a special event being held at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX (Rob Thomas's hometown or at least old stomping ground). It's a two-hour event including a screening of the new episode, with selected highlight clips and a panel Q&A. Check the Drafthouse site for more info.

When the cast found out RT was doing this, they wanted to come with him (KB, EC, JD, and I think Michael Muhney aka Lamb). But it's a one-time deal (well, two actually, Sat and Sun).

Yes, it was. Enrico Colantoni was suffering from bronchitis and could not come, but I met Rob Thomas, Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring and Michael Muhney. All of them were extremely friendly, kind and gracious to all the fans. They patiently answered a lot of questions during the Q&A (some a bit bizarre) and signed autographs for everyone who attended.

RT talked a lot about fighting with UPN over certain plot points early in S1 but the notes stopped coming after about ep 5 or 6. He also talked a lot about how they try to get stuff past the censors. Most of their conflict is with UPN's standards and practices. He was especially proud of the "You got a trophy for a rim job?" line from S1 and he said nobody at UPN knew what "the shocker" was from the S2 premiere (which was Jason Dohring's idea, and he did it in every take so RT could not edit it out).

For you guys, KB is even more gorgeous in person. She's also smart and funny, and was even heckling/mocking RT at a couple of points.

I'm sure there are many recaps of the new episode (2.11) all over the web b/c there were 2-300 people at the screening in Austin, so I'm not going to get into details, but I will say that I liked the episode a lot. The spoiler info is out there for anyone who wants it, but there is a plot twist midway throught so I'm not going to give anything away about that.

Finally caught up with S2.

A familiar Buffy-like phenomenon is occuring: My increasing love for the show is paralleled with my increasing dislike for the title character.

Speaking of Buffy, I spotted several Whedonesque dialogue in the last couple of episodes.

Veronica's most detestable trait has got to be the "get even thing". Consider Celeste Kane. I don't know what sane woman would get on the offensive with her boyfriend's mother. That has got to be the dumbest thing possible if she valued the relationship. But then again, she is 18. And you have to wonder what kinda of son lets his woman (or anyone for that matter) speak to his mother in such a fashion. This just adds to my profound dislike of the Duncan character.

I am REALLY glad to see Wallace back, he was sorely missing from the show. That said, I do not AT ALL like how the writers handled Veronica's reaction to his dissapearance. He was gone for several days before he wrote back. She had no reason to assume he was safe, and she is the type of gal who would have shaken haven and earth to make sure to he was, in the absence of any information. Well, I think anyway. I am trying to remember how she handled Duncan's dissapearance last season, but can't.

The most confusing episode to date has to be Meg's sister thing.

Eagerly waiting for next week's ep.

I think she knew Wallace needed his space and would be royally pissed if she had meddled. It was a time where she really needed to just trust his judgment about being with his father.

The Celeste thing, I suspect you're talking about the scene where she accuses Celeste of being the abandoning mother. That was just plain bad. I love Veronica in spite of her flaws, but she does has a blind spot when it comes to her theories. They *have* to be right, and they seldom are. Not completely, anyway.

Still though, it makes her a more interesting heroin. The fact that she's able to make flaws makes her more real to me. Same with Buffy (at least seasons 1-6, a lot of the final year felt like it existed purely to move the story ahead...)

Remember that Duncan might not feel so much good things for Celeste, they did completely lie to him for an entire year about a death they just assumed he'd taken part in. Not to mention how she handled his thing with Veronica. Add in that he didn't see fit to even tell her he was WITH Veronica again, this leads me to believe he doesn't view her highly himself.

Sure. I certainly wasn't complaining.

They also went to great lengths to cover up "his crime" and keep him out of trouble. While it can be argued that they were protecting their interests and social standing as well, the Kanes do not strike me as that shallow - they did it for their son. You would think he would be fucking grateful.

One thing that is very unclear to me: Why was Veronica's mother ran out of town? I am sure that question was answered las season, but I sure as heck don't remember.

BTW, do we know why Abel Koontz daughter got offed by her boyfriend? I guess we don't care. Weird story line.

What's the status of Keith/Sherry relationship? She's been MIA since Wallace peaced out.

I like Wallace's g/f and hope to see mroe of her. I don't understand the hate expressed towards her in this thread...

Boy, I am so hooked.

At this point I like anything that takes Miss Mars down a peg.

Her methods may be objectionable but her beef with V is not without merit. And nothing she did was beyond V herself.

Anyone else watch this in the Boston area?

TV38 isn't showing this weeks episode on Wednesday. It is being pre-empted by a basketball game. They are showing it Saturday night though.

I wait weeks for a new episode, then I have to wait even longer.

Ms. Mars ran out of town because

A) She was a booze hound who couldn't handle the fact that the family went from middle class to low class (at least, this is what Veronica thought)

B) Celeste had Clarence Wiedman send her pictures of Veronica with a target over her head, implying someone was going to kill her if she didn't leave town. Celeste did this to get Lianne out of the picture, mostly cause she was aware Jake was still possibly seeing her.

I like the character of Jackie, but I think she's a real B****. She ads a necessary element to the show, much like Cordelia in season 1/2 of Buffy. You love to hate her.

I was under the impression that Mom became alcoholic on the road -- although one year is an awfully short amount of time to become such a drunk as to need rehab.

Has it been established that Celested did this? That would certainly explain Veronica's animosity towards her. I have absolutely no memory of this development. So was Jake Kane still seing her? I vaguely remember some scene with Jake entering her motel room. In any case, it appears Mrs. Mars' dissapearance had nothing to do with Lilly's murder. I was wondering where it fit into this whole thing.

On the season 1 DVD features there was a scene deleted from the pilot that would have explained the mom's alcoholic problems. Keith is called to a bar to pick her up where she was drunk and disorderly. Veronica gave a V.O. describing the event. It was deleted for time, I believe, and the purpose was to show that she'd turned to alcohol before leaving town.

In "An Echoll's Family Christmas" Veronica confronts Jake at the christmas party about the photographs and he is completely surprised by it. Later he goes out to the party, violently graps Celeste by the arm and screams "What did you do? What did you do Celeste!?" This pretty much makes it clear she had Clarence spy on Veronica and take the photos of her.

Veronica's mom had to have been seeing Jake Kane because she was the one who KNEW he couldn't have killed Lilly. She knew because the two of them were in a hotel together at the time. Celeste later lied with Jake to Keith saying that the both of them were there together.

veronica's dad and Wallace's mom have split. She pretty much dumped him after he snuck into her house and stole the papers relating to Wallace's relationship with his father. That wasn't his right to do, and she called him on it.

I'm hoping they pick up that storyline later, because I thought the two of them had amazing chemistry. I noticed it early in the first season and was disappointed it never went anywhere. When she returned toward the end I was very happy. PUT 'EM BACK ROB!

Robert, thanks for the explanations. The multiple threads in this series move quite briskly along and it's relatively easy to lose track of some developments. Or I am just slow...

There was also that pesky problem of her husband accusing her (ex?) lover of murdering his daughter and the entire town shunning the Mars family. I think all those things drove Lianne to drink, although she probably had a long-simmering alcohol problem that just became exacerbated with the Mars fall from grace.

There were several deleted scenes on the DVD dealing with Lianne and Veronica's relationship with her and I thought they were all helpful in giving more background on Lianne, that scene from the Pilot in particular. It's too bad they were cut.

I understand the comments about Veronica's being rude to Celeste, but under the circumstances, I totally see Veronica's point of view. Celeste ran her mother out of town and also has been thoroughly vile to Veronica for years, blaming Veronica for what her mom did. Plus, Celeste lied to Duncan to deliberately get him to break up with Veronica. (She might have thought there was a chance that Veronica was Jake's but she certainly had no way of knowing for sure.) If I were Veronica, I'd have a hard time getting past all that.

When Celeste gave her that whole speech about "I don't hate you, I just can't stand to look at you," she essentially admitted that Veronica hadn't done anything to incur her wrath except be Lianne's daughter. Yeah, that's being a mature adult, blaming a teenager for her mother's bad behavior. Celeste is vile.

How is this show going to survive? It's bad enough that it's up against Lost right now, but I just read in the paper that American Idol will be moving ahead one hour to the 8PM Central time slot starting March 8.

I know it doesn't look good, but everybody asked that when VM was moved to Wed against Lost this year, and it actually gained viewers over last year's ratings. UPN has to know that going against Lost and AI is a tough time slot and it can't expect VM to gain many more viewers in that slot.

At least South Beach totally tanked and got much lower numbers than VM, so that bodes well for VM being renewed for a third season. UPN President Gail Ostroff said at the TCA press conference that UPN was fairly happy with VM's numbers this year.

It's not a "most viewers in a slot gets renewed, other shows get cancelled" situation. Veronica Mars gets UPN more viewers (and more demographically desirable viewers) than many other shows on their network. In many ways, its competition isn't really Lost, Criminal Minds, American Idol and/or Law & Order, but South Beach, Love Inc., and whatever UPN has in development for next season.

True, but I would also add that UPN really wants to beat whatever the WB has on in any given timeslot, and I think VM has been doing that consistently this year. Last year it usually got beat by the WB's One Tree Hill, iirc.

I like the direction of the show as well, some interesting editing here and there, the surpring number of wideangle shots (for a TV show) allows for some good mise-en-scene as well.

It's visually interesting beyond the bizarre yellow tint (not a big fan of that).

Only inasmuch as they are targeting similar audiences and every 13-24 year-old woman who is watching the encore presentation of Beauty and the Geek is one who is not watching Veronica Mars. I suppose there may also be some competition for affiliate stations and timeslots: If you don't have six stations in the area, the one that is (locally) last-place might wind up off the air or with its programming shunted to post-prime-time/weekend slots.

I am pretty sure that is just a rumor, because that goes against everything Rob Thomas has said in published interviews.

He did say that last season he had a backup plan to change the the killer in case the identity of the killer was leaked, but that never happened.

If anyone's missed this other thread, UPN and the WB are merging into one network, the CW, next season. This is good since I've always felt VM to be more of a WB-type show, and now they can team it up with something like Smallville or Gilmore Girls.

However, I think the best news is this little tidbit from the press release:

Quote:
As the top creative executive, Ostroff will have available a line-up of some of the most popular programming that appeals to young adults in the media business. These programming assets range from hit reality series such as "America's Next Top Model" and The WB's "Beauty and the Geek," to hit dramas like The WB's "Smallville," "Gilmore Girls," "Supernatural," and UPN's "Veronica Mars" as well as UPN's hit comedies "Everybody Hates Chris" and "Girlfriends" and The WB's hit comedy "Reba."

It's not quite a renewal announcement, but being mentioned is the press release is certainly a good sign.
