What's the deal with the 9/10ths of a cent thing?

The real reason is that they can have a price displayed thats one cent lower than what the effective price is.

2.99 9/10

looks better to passing motorists than

3.00

Even though if you buy less than 10 gal, the price is effectively $3/gal but if you buy 10 gallons you do save One Whole Entire Cent.

A temporary solution that I haven't seen mentioned is a temporary federal mandate on the reduction of 'blends' of gasoline.

I'm surprised this is not talked about more. I know the greens would go nuts, but...well, never mind...

Also, the government needs to shit-can all taxes on gas, at least for now.

Sunday it was $2.54 (down about 10 cents). Noonish (today) it was $2.89. Now $2.99.

Somebody is getting rich BIG FUCKING TIME.

If there is a gas shortage, why arent stations putting up signs stating they are out of gas?

It is time to start drilling in Alaska and building more refineries. Yes, long-long term we need to go more hybrid and so on.

Since the gas pricing is all based on speculation (read: scam) I'd be willing to be prices would drop drastically just when ground is broken on a string of new refineries (plese, let's use common sense and build them inland a bit) and just one drill plopped down in ANWAR. And those situations assume the Middle East will never get fixed (which it probably won't, but I won't state what NEEDS to be done over there, I'll find some political chat room to do that ).

25 cent increase for the 5 closest stations where I work.

$2.69 now. Yesterday I got it for 2.44 on fillup. Glad I got in at that price. It is said when I wish for $1.70 cents per gallon again.

Lives tough for you guys EH!!

Gas went from 98.5 yesterday morning to $1.19 PER LITRE today.

For a U.s. gallon that would be $1 a litre x 3.78 litre = $3.78

Brent, I saw the same thing this morning. Filled up at 97.7 last night, and did a double take this morning when I saw the 1.19. Really glad that I have a full tank right now...

This is going to fuck the economy up big time unless the federal government steps in and does something.

Since they won't, we're toast...

If you are talking releasing the Federal Reserve, I am with you. However, I lived through federal price controls and I never, ever want to go back to the days of long gas lines, station rationing and odd/even days rationing to the consumer, which also corresponded with the highest inflation rates ever and the most stagnant economy since the Great Depression. No way, no how.

My wife and I now car-pool to work. It's a small sacrifice, but every drop of gas counts. I really wish I lived closer to my job - I would not rule out riding a bicycle. If this gets worse - I can imagine highways filled with bicycles.

If you're talking about releasing some of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve , I believe they have already decided to do that. However all it will do is reduce the post-Katrina crude oil price spike. It won't bring the price of oil down significantly and likely won't reduce the price of gas at the pump at all.

That'll happen when the government actually reduces its budget.

Which is to say never.

Yes, that's what I meant. Giving a break on refinery restrictions and overriding state "blend" requirements would also give a long term (the former) and short term (the latter) move towards a solution. An immediate OK to drilling in the ANWAR region should be a no brainer, if only to help relieve the reliance on foreign oil. Price controls, however, are a way to screw up the economy, not fix it.
