Batman Begins was cool, but for me, it could not touch Batman and Robin, which I enjoyed for its campy silliness. My favorite Batman movie is the Adam West one, and Schumacher's films, Batman and Robin in particular, really harkened back to the lighter 60's take on the franchise, which I rather appreciated and preferred over the darker, more depressing entries in the series.

Then again, I guess my opinion holds no weight, because anyone who disagrees with you is "a complete moron." How can I argue with logic like that?

I don't think the "complete moron" quote had anything to do with Reed's dislike of the movie. It has because he didn't understand how there were two versions of the Joker: the one from Batman in 1989 and the one in The Dark Knight. It just shows that he is too stupid to realize that the two series of movies are completely independent from one another.

[Edit] Nevermind, I guess the "complete moron" thing was aimed at people who like Batman and Robin. I don't like the movie, but I cetainly don't think anyone who does is a moron.

Please tell me this is a joke. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course.. but please.. Adam West's Batman had some charm to it. Batman & Robin is an abomination of a movie. That's not even my opinion... but a fact

You got the first part right - about Rex Reed being a moron for not knowing the difference. However, you got the second part wrong - I said anyone - like Rex Reed - who thinks Batman & Robin is BETTER than Begins would have to be a complete moron.

Batman & Robin isn't just bad because of the dialogue and overacting, it's also very poorly made.

If someone can find something to like about it, fine but to say it's better than Begins? It's so vastly inferior in every way.

As I said in my previous post, I do think that Batman & Robin is better than Batman Begins. But even if I didn't, your proclamation that anyone who disagrees with your assessment of the films' relative merits is "a complete moron" is rude and completely uncalled for. I've always thought the HTF was above that sort of childish name-calling.

Batman isnt supposed to be campy or silly. Batman was always meant to be atmospheric, dark and grim.

Frank Millers opening comments in The Dark Knight Returns explains this perfectly.

You might enjoy Batman & Robin more than Batman Begins but there is no way in hell you think that Batman & Robin is actually a better made film than Batman Begins.. it's impossible.

Why should I be concerned with what Batman is "supposed to be" or "meant to be"? If I'm interested in the original take on Batman, I can go back and read those comics. But when I'm watching a movie, I'm concerned the movie in and of itself. And I happen to think that a movie about a guy fighting crime in a giant animal suit is better suited to a campy, lighthearted approach than to a dark, grim one. Obviously, most disagree. I have no problem with that. What I do have a problem with is being called "an idiot" for having a particular opinion.

Try a straight adaptation of any of the 'realistic' Neal Adams/Denny O'Neil stories from the early seventies and the results will still look a lot like the TV show. The same for most of the output until the influence of the first film is felt. The idiom influences the way you process the material- just like a 'theatrical' acting style is neccessary in a big auditorium, but can be insufferable on a movie screen. The Batman TV show was a STRAIGHT adaptation of the source. That very rigid adherence is why it seems so silly in some aspects.

Even when attempting to view both movies subjectively and respecting the fact that both are different adaptations of the same character, I can't think of one way that Batman and Robin is a better film than Batman Begins.

This seems like a non-sequitur. If one enjoys the film more then it stands to reason that one would think it is better made as well, since it better meets the viewer's expectations . At least that is how I see it.

I prefer the burton batman films over begins.. however begins is much better then both forever and B&R.. enough said.

this talk about oscar for heath.. I don't know if he will get nominated or not.. comic book movies never get that kind of respect.. superman the movie certainly deserve some big nominations.. we will see.

Not at all, I consider that the definition of a "guilty pleasure," though you don't have to call it that. A movie that, logically, you know isn't great but you love it anyways.

For instance, I love "Bad Boys II." I don't care that it sits at 24% on RT, and that most people despise it. I could watch it 100 times straight and still not get tired of it, and I'm not one for mindless eye candy or anything either, I do my best to avoid it. But "Bad Boys II" is just fucking awesome.

What Zack said. I think The Godfather is one of the best films of all time. But I enjoy and watch Pee-wee's Big Adventure much more.

I never thought I'd find anyone else on HTF who felt the same way about this movie as I do. Even though it was destroyed by nearly all the critics, I absolutely LOVED it. I know it's mindless, crude, and very non-PC(which is always a good thing in my book), but I appreciated the fact that Michael Bay just said "f**k it, let's blow up as much s**t as we possibly can for two hours". I wish they'd all get back on board for Bad Boys III.

Star Wars, very much a genre picture (sci-fi/fantasy) was nominated for several Oscars, including Best Supporting Actor (Guinness), in that same era.

The difference between Bad Boys II and Batman & Robin is that Bad Boys II doesn't feature 'comic book' overacting, terrible one-liners are kept to a minimum, and it looks like a professionally made picture rather than a cheap approximation of a professionally made picture. It IS awesome, and while I prefer the first one (which I love dearly), II is certainly up there.

Plus any movie that features a pair of rats getting in on and homo-erotic conversations in an electronics store (for every customer to see) is A-OK...shit were those spoilers?

If you told me you were describing Batman and Robin with that, I'd believe it. My "favorite" part was when Bane said "BOMB!" every time he set a bomb down.

Not applicable. Comparing whether Godfather is better made than Pee-wee's Big Adventure is a straw man. The two films are in vastly different genres and designed to meet different objectives.

The two films being discussed are within the same genre and have the same main character. The argument of whether one is better than the other is specific. My contention was that if the viewer liked Batman and Robin better than Batman Begins then it stands to reason that the first one better met his criteria for an enjoyable Batman film: therefore, for him, it was a better made film than Batman Begins.

Also cutting random images with repetitious dialogue and cutting them together does not constitute a valid criticism of the film, since it takes those images out of context with the rest of the film. The clip is funny but essentially meaningless.

I don't get the idea of a "guilty pleasure". I either like the film or I don't. If I like the film then I don't feel guilty about liking it. Other people may hate it but ultimately that is no concern of mine. I sure wouldn't call someone a moron because his or her opinion of a movie doesn't coincide with mine.

I don't think that Batman and Robin is a better movie than Batman Begins, but if someone thinks otherwise then so what. All it means, is that their criteria for a good Batman flick differs from mine.
