Working with Jean Gabin and the writer Jacque Prevert, Carne created what became known as "poetic-realism". During WWII he created what is considered one of the landmarks of French film Les Enfants du Paradis. During the post-war years he quit working with Prevert and also was tried regarding his connections with the Vichy regime. His career never recovered.

CHILDREN OF PARADISE is generally considered to be the greatest French film ever made and, although I may enjoy other French films more, I can't really argue with that opinion. Even so, I still need to watch my Criterion DVDs of it and PORT OF SHADOWS!

Brook, I recommend that you pick up Home Vision's DVD of DROLE DE DRAME which, although bare-bones, can be obtained online pretty cheaply; the film itself features a superb ensemble cast and is utterly hilarious!

Although Carne's career is popularly percieved to have suffered a major decline after WWII, all three post-war films in my list are well worth watching.

I'd love to watch a few more Carnes, namely JENNY (1936), LE JOUR SE LEVE (1939), LES VISITEURS DU SOIR (1942), JULIETTE OU LA CLEF DU SONGE (1950) and LA MARIE DU PORT (1950).
