Re: Zombie Movie Appreciation Thread

Zomboy ran kind of long but it has it's moments. I like the portion in the bathtub. What might've been better would be something similar to the nearly dead on Invisible Man parody in Amazon Women on the Moon where Ed Bagley Jr is convinced he's invisible. Of course he's just walking around nude and everybody is humoring him. That could've worked well here with scenes of people being patronizing, innercut with scenes of Zomboy at home talking about his experiences.

Real Name: Arthur Belling of "St. Looney Up-The-Cream-Bun-and-Jam"

Swamp Zombies - College students, a park ranger and a hermit join forces to fight the titular ghouls in this low budget zombiefest. Lots of undead ass-kicking and gratuituous busty babe nudity ensue. Decent of its type, but overlong. Where's Swamp Thing when ya need him?

Zombie Doom - Gore galore from the infamous Andreas Schnass. Three men arrive on an island and run afoul of the villainous Karl the Butcher and his Infantry of Doom. Meanwhile Karl's resident mad scientist is raising an army of the living dead. Luckily for the world two ninjas show up to monkey wrench the works! Pretty bad, but worth a look for the over the top splatter, including a four-seater guillotine and a nasty hook up the ass/spinal cord ripping! The dubbing is atrocious which makes for an uber-cheesy experience. Caveat: for a flick titled Zombie Doom, there's relatively little undead action! AKA Violent Shit III.

*1/2 out of ****

Splatometer rating: **** out of ****

Zombie '90: Extreme Pestilence - More blood and guts from splatmeister Andreas Schnass has two scientists trying to stop an outbreak of the living dead. Wall to wall spatter, most of which is pretty goofy in its execution. If you've ever wanted to see an infant (don't worry, it's just a doll!) ripped in two, give this a spin. The horrible dubbing provides some unintentional laughs.

Living Dead Lock-Up - A convict learns that the prison to which he's been assigned has a nasty secret. Turns out that a former warden had a bad track record with keeping inmates alive and they're back from the grave, hungry for human flesh! A good try, but muddled and hampered to the point of distraction by its microbudget.

Splatometer rating: ** out of ****

Dead Girl Walking - Japanese short about a young girl who dies of a heart attack though her body remains animate. Unfortunately that doesn't keep her from rotting! Appalled, her family tries to destroy her but she runs away and ends up a dancing sideshow freak. Interesting premise spoiled somewhat by a silly ending.

Psychomania - Solid Euroshocker has the leader of a motorcyle gang using a supernatural ritual to come back from the dead as a murderous and unstoppable zombie. Can he convince his buddies to join him in the
afterlife? Can the cops put a stop to his killing spree?

Splatometer rating: zero out of ****

Brain Blockers - A college professor experiments on co-eds with his new serum, turning them into flesh-eating ghouls. Ingratiating horror comedy is more entertaining than it has any right to be, thanks to an attractive and game cast. I'd marry the hellacute female lead. Yum, yum, yummity-yum!

Lover from Beyond the Grave - Short homage to Bela Lugosi and Ed Wood about a warlock who discovers his wife is cheating on him. Intending to kill her, he is shocked when her lover murders her instead! He then brings her back from the dead so he can kill her himself, but can he control her? Slightly better than a Wood production though that ain't sayin' much. Probably would have worked better had the filmmakers made more of an attempt to emulate the stylings of older films.

Kung Fu Zombie - Wacky blend of martial arts and undead mayhem finds an upstart kung fu master fighting zombies, ghosts and vampires. Lots of yelling and whooshing and cheesy dubbing, you know the drill. Fairly engaging but thankfully not too long.

Splatometer rating: **1/2 out of ****

Zombie 5: Killing Birds - A group of college students road trip it to the Louisiana Bayou in search of a rare woodpecker but find instead murderous zombies. What is the connection one of them has to the undead assassins? And what is Robert Vaughn doing in this movie? Actually it's not that bad as it does boast an effective score and some tense scenes. If the dead meat here weren't such a bunch of spineless chickenshit pussies it might have rated three stars. And yes, there are some killer birds here.

Death Metal Zombies - An evil death metal band records a special tune that turns its listeners into zombies, all part of their plan to take over the world! Can one zombie's girlfriend save the day? Cool premise hampered by grade school acting; still entertaining if you're in the mood for cheese. If you like death metal, crank it up! Personally I'd prefer World Music Zombies.

The Secret of Zombie Mountain - Goofy little short about a band of misfits trying to solve their zombie problem. Talking cars, "hombies" and seven hundred foot tall ghouls fill out the offbeat plot. See it here.

Gangs of the Dead - Synthesis of Dawn of the Dead and Assault on Precinct 13 has a meteor shower turning homeless Los Angelinos into flesh-eating zombies. Trapped in a shadowy warehouse by the undead are two rival gangs and a couple of cops. Can they stop fighting amongst themselves long enough to come up with a good survival plan? Better than it has any right to be given the title, as long as you're willing to overlook some plot conceits (how come a meteorite smashing through an L.A. bridge didn't make the news?). Bonus points for including Reggie Bannister in the cast.

Death Valley: The Revenge of Bloody Bill - College students on an outing run afoul of Civil War villain Bloody Bill Anderson, now a demonic zombie who rules a ghost town of the living dead. Zombie 4: After Death review
My opening:
It takes a special kind of person to be a horror fan, I mean a real horror fan, the kind of guy that will sit through every crappy film they can get their hands on in hopes of finding a gem. It takes an even more special person to be a zombie fan, a real die hard, zombie aficionado to sit through all of the horrible zombie movies that come out each year. I do not claim to be as die hard as many are out there, but I am willing to put myself through a lot in the search for a good zombie movie. All of that said, Zombie 4: After Death is not a good zombie film, not without some certain charms, but it is not a good zombie film. Hell, it isn't even a good movie, but here it is, and here I watch.

Re: Zombie Movie Appreciation Thread

Thanks, Steve.

Zombi 3 review is up.
From the opening:
Following the success of Zombi (a retitled and recut, by Dario Argento, version of George Romero's Dawn of the Dead), and Lucio Fulci's Zombi 2 (released as Zombie in the US, and unrelated to Romero's film), producer Franco Gaudenzi was looking to strike while the iron was hot and get another zombie movie out into theaters. So naturally, Gaudenzi approached Lucio Fulci about making another film, what would become Zombi 3. He agreed, and the end result is a film that is only partially Fulci's, despite his name being the only one credited, and one that he has said that he does not particularly like. Now, if the director doesn't like the film, why should we? The answer is we probably shouldn't, and it really isn't all that good. Still, there is something about this movie, and many like it that have an unexplained attraction for the horror movie fan.

Unfortunately, this spate of zombie reviews won't last, but I will try to squeeze in some that I have time to time. I watched Zombie 5 and will have something on that forthcoming. I will also let you all know when I complete whatever related flicks I get to.

Hey Steve,
Do you have an archive of your reviews other than what is on the HTF?

Re: Zombie Movie Appreciation Thread

I don't have an archive - sorry. Wish I had time to write longer reviews and such, but with my job and my hot and steamy affair with Naomi Watts still going strong, I just don't have the time.

There is a list of the films I've posted about in this thread, along with their star ratings, in my initial post.

And no, I'm not really having an affair with Naomi Watts. I made that up.

Re: Zombie Movie Appreciation Thread

If I get time, and with your OK, I would like to go through this and compile them all into one list and post it on my site, with credit and a link directing them here for more. It is great stuff your doing, and think more should be able to get exposed to it.
That cool with you?

Re: Zombie Movie Appreciation Thread

Actually Steve, and sorry to take the flame away from Chris, but you know where the capsule reviews should be. I'm sure I could maybe take the time to put them all over on a movie by movie basis. It would take a while, but each one would be searchable. I could even make a "Zombie" category with a button to get to the complete list. I've been wanting to get that site back in action, and this would be a nice niche to have.

Anyway, email, or I'll get to you the next time we are both online.

Eh, you can both share. Go for it.

(I've linked to this thread on a zombie-related forum I visit so you guys wouldn't be the first.)

Re: Zombie Movie Appreciation Thread

That occurred to me after I had posted. Besides, I'm not sure I want to spend the time it would take to do it, but maybe some here can give some feedback on how valuable they think it would be to actually be able to see and search the capsule reviews by title. It just might be nice if you are looking for a specific title.

Re: Zombie Movie Appreciation Thread

I've thought about doing that myself, but it would take awhile. Wish I'd thought of it when I started this thread when it would have been easier. I suppose one could always use the search function if they were looking for a specific title.

Well, time to screen Zombie Christ...
