Re: AFI 100 Years Series Discussion & Challenges, vol. 2

We watched The Bank Dick and His Girl Friday over the past week. I'd never seen a W.C. Fields film before, so The Bank Dick was quite a surprise. Fields brand of slapstick comedy as he tries to prevent an audit of the bank he works for is uproarious. It was great to see Shemp as the bartender, too. Cary Grant stars in His Girl Friday as the newspaper man who can't let his ex-wife (and ex-coworker) leave the paper. This is a true classic, though I'm not sure how they came up with the title.

I gave The Bank Dick and His Girl Friday

welcome sparky, looking forward to your thoughts:

How the West Was Won - 6 of 10
Scores minilist

I think what surprised me the most about this film was how good the script was, I expected it to be a lot worse. The cinerama is unimpressive on the dvd format, at least in this non-anamorphic version. I'd be interested in seeing this in smile-vision or the next time it runs at the arclight cinemrama dome as I've been thwarted in all my attempts to see the past revivals there. I'm hoping it'll come back this year due to the impending special edition dvd release. Jimmy Stewart was the highlight of the film for me, though the Oregon trail sequence was also very good. I wasn't as enamored by the transcontinental railroad stuff, though the post railroad stuff was grand. The civil war material was much too short, it's too bad the rest of the film didn't have the concise compact storytelling and laser precision of that segment. and even the conversation between Sherman and Grant went on a little long as it was. unfortunately the confederate deserter in that scene was an example of some of the weakest writing of the movie. A classic example of an old fashioned set piece blockbuster this still is a lot of fun and quite entertaining.

And the score is indeed fantastic.

The Mission - 8 of 10
Scores list

Ennio Morricone's lush score and Chris Menges' amazing photography make this film fairly unforgettable. Robert Bolt's screenplay is not as incisive as his A Man for All Seasons but it is still excellent. DeNiro is very good, but has a modern intonation in his words that is hard to get past. On the other hand Jeremy Irons and the rest of the cast are outstanding. The direction is very well handled, and the film handles things fairly realistically. Bravo all around, a film I think I would like and appreciate more a second go round.

The Mission is the story of a Jesuit founded mission in the jungles of what I presume is Columbia set 300 years ago. the territory is nominally under the rule of spain, who has recently ceded or sold the territory to Portugal. The jesuits had offered the natives sanctuary, with the blessing of spain and the church, from the portuguese and spanish slavers who hunted them down and drove them from their lands. The film centers around the Jesuit's attempts to 'prove' to the judge sent to the area that spain must stay in control of the lands to save these people's lives. Unfortunately what happens depends on the politics of 5000 miles away rather than what is relevant to south america, and the judge's decision had already been made before he arrived. The struggle then for the jesuits is do they resist or turn the other cheek, lead the natives in war or lead them in prayer? DeNiro plays a man who kills his brother over a woman and in penance (and to protect himself with sanctuary) joins the Jesuits years before all this comes to a head, he is a pivotal player in what befalls the people. Jeremy Irons plays the Jesuit leader who reforms him.

I would rate this a 9, but I started listening to the commentary (for about 45 minutes) and just got so turned off by Joffe's self congratulatory attitude as well as his attitudes towards the religious themes underscoring the picture that I downgraded it a bit. Not really fair, but when the director says the film includes every possible theme in the history of film and literature (except it's nothing to do with religion) the hubris is a bit hard to swallow. Still it's a magnificent and amazing production. Much better than the Killing Fields, though in many ways very similar to that film (same director).

Ennio Morricone's score truly is one of the greatest ever written, the AFI did very very well to include it in their list.

*I've still got the HTF created list of films for the stars, but I've now seen all the films on all the official AFI lists and minilists.

Julius Caesar - 8 of 10
Stars list - Marlon Brando
OARDVD 020908

it turns out I have seen this before, in high school english but I think I slept through at least half of it. The play is excellent, one of my favorites and perhaps since I am farther removed from it now than I was then (watching it after we'd read the play in class), I think i appreciate it more. James Mason as Bruts is superb, Brando as Antony is is excellent, especially in the famous speech to the romans. outstanding. The actor who plays Caesar really delivers the dialogue so superbly that it sounds completely natural despite the shakespearian rhythm. I did love the almost coloquial way the shakespeare was delivered by virtually all the actors, much, much better than the OH SO IMPORTANT delivery of Olivier's Hamlet. actually delivering the siloqueys is much more effective than having them be voice overs. an excellent adaptation.

I see now that Joseph Mankiewicz directed this, no wonder everything was handled so utterly superbly, a straight up shakespeare adaptation in the hands of a master.

I watched Blade Runner for the first time last night. Although I'm not a huge Sci-Fi guy, I enjoyed the story. There is excellent acting throughout, especially the outstanding Rutger Hauer. It's impossible to digest everything from it in one sitting... I'm going to come back to it again in a couple of years.

As a side note, my wife figured out that James Hong (Hannibal Chew in the movie) was also the "Seinfeld Four" guy in the Chinese Restaurant episode.

Re: AFI 100 Years Series Discussion & Challenges, vol. 2

Queen Christina - 6 of 10
Stars List - Greta Garbo

Garbo plays the Queen of Sweden. She's being pressured to marry either her country's war hero or a foreign head of state, but either way everyone feels she must marry. Eventually, fed up with all this frustrating pressure she runs off dressed as a man to explore the country (Connecticutt Yankee style). She promptly falls into the company of the envoy of Spain who is traveling to the palace. Due to a variety of improbable circumstances these two gentlemen are forced to share a bed in an extensively funny sequence that suggests the two effemminate 'men' are going to be making love to each other--the Spanish envoy seems quite pleased with this scenario, but is even more pleased when he discovers he's actually got a woman. They spend a weekend together barely moving from the bed to the complete lack of consternation from the inn owner. Evenually Queen Christina slips away back to the palace and then has to hear the envoy's plea for her to marry his king, much to his chagrin as he didn't know he was boffing the Queen.

things get complicated and silly and end sort of tragically. Garbo is excellent in the role though. The highlight is all the homosexual humor when she's pretending to be a man, though.

Easter Parade - 6 of 10
Stars list - Fred Astaire

Great acting, okay songs (best is the title and the umbrella songs) Astaire hoofs nicely and Garland belts her numbers adequetly. But the script and plot are less than stellar, ultimately quite boring because it's simply by the numbers.

The Cameraman - 7 of 10
Stars list, Buster Keaton

overall an excellent Buster Keaton film, unfortunately I sympathized too much with Buster and found the whole Pool scene just insanely difficult to watch (though the changing room was sort of absurdly funny). I probably will like this better on a revisit, when I know how things work out from scene to scene and won't be so anxious about Buster having every possible bad thing that could happen to him, happen to him. It's got a great ending though, in Chinatown, and then a rescue on the beach--thank goodness the ending is at least a happy one. There are some tremendously funny sequences, and Keaton is so damn good at blending comedy and action, the way his compositions work for the audiences' perspective is unparalleled. He makes us laugh by what we know (but he doesn't know) because we can see more than he can and anticipate the next moment (which causes the comedy to build and the payoff to have a better impact). It's comedy without reaction shots or cutting, or hiding to reveal a 'surprise' at the last moment. I love it.

Re: AFI 100 Years Series Discussion & Challenges, vol. 2

On the Beach - 8 of 10
stars list: Fred Astaire
stars list: Ava Gardner

Gregory Peck captains an american submarine. They surface. Nuclear holocaust. the only sanctuary is Australia, where the prevailing winds will protect it from the fallout from wasting North America Europe and Asia for about a year.

All the survivors there hope for a future. a young couple with an infant are struggling to cope with the idea of facing doom. The military and scientists hope that perhaps the weather has dampened fallout weather or that Antartica may provide a sanctuary. But humanity faces extinction, the contingency plans for suicide pills for everyone, so they may avoid the drawn out death of radiation sickness. Ava Gardner is the woman who falls for Gregory Peck and Fred Astaire is her husband, a nuclear engineer who helped design the bombs and computer delivery systems that set off the holocaust. Ridden with guilt he's long since estranged from his wife, and both are alcoholics.

A fascinating, chilling and truly incredible film. Relentless and with no happy ending, it's as bleak as a message movie about the horrors of mutually assured destruction ought to be. On the Beach will rattle you even today.

Re: AFI 100 Years Series Discussion & Challenges, vol. 2

The Three Musketeers - 7 of 10
stars list - Gene Kelly (he gets a 10)

mostly excellent vehicle where Gene Kelly shows off: A) what a great actor he was B) how much more versatile he was than a song and dance guy C) he was a hell of an romantic lead D) he was an ever better action/adventure lead.

it's interesting (and a coincidence) to watch the last Kelly film I had left on the stars list the day after watching the last Astaire film I had left. Astaire's role in On the Beach was the sort serious oscar bait type of supporting role (and just a little bit pretentious but not really that meaty) and he was great in that role but Astaire didn't seem to bring anything additional to the role that made it standout. Whereas Kelly really brought it all to Three Musketeers and made an otherwise forgettable adaptation into an almost must see just because he is simply that great. Kelly is breathtaking in this role. He's better than Errol Flynn in every respect. Unfortunately the rest of the film is not as good as Robin Hood in any respect, the women in particular are especially disappointing. verging on annoying.

The fight sequences in this film are the best I've ever seen in a classical film. I don't think there was a better sword fight in american film until The Phantom Menace
came out. The stunt work is absolutely top notch, so long as you suspend your disbelief as everyone gets stabbed between their side and their arm like in a high school play.

There's a great shot of DeWinter's bloody hand that is very memorable near the end of the film, but that is the only really iconographic image I'll take from the film.

A Patch of Blue - 8 of 10
Stars list - Sidney Potier

Another excellent Sidney Potier film. This one is about a repressed/abused blind girl who is occasionally let out of her tiny NYC apartment to stay in the park for a day. Her ignorant family has provided her with no education and no access to the resources for the blind. Sidney Potier notices her as she tries to get a bug out of her blouse, and in helping her they strike up a friendship. Each is rather fascinated with the other. the story is predictable and the characters are somewhat cliche, but the performers invest them with great warmth and humanity. On the other hand Shelley Winters gets to chew the scenery with great vigor as the girl's racist mother who is considering starting up a brothel, with her 'useless' daughter as the primary prostitute. The great performances and very good script make this an exceptional film. the photography is also outstanding.

Mr Roberts - 9 of 10
Stars list - James Cagney

this is one of those movies I've wanted to watch for a long time and never got around to it. It'd be a perfect ten if it weren't for one of the most obnoxious over-bearing and tonally out of sorts score I've ever heard attached to a movie. Most sitcoms have better underscoring. ugh.

The film has its haphazard elements, but you can't go wrong with Henry Fonda, Jack Lemmon, William Powell and James Cagney. What a hell of a cast. The script is quite a lot of fun, but sometimes tries to hard, however it makes up for it with a helluva ending and a whole lot of good soldiery shenanigans, like a certain firecracker that blows up the laundry--humor so clean it's almost out of a disney movie . Tonally I think the film misses the mark just a bit by going broad when it could have been surgically incisive. Dead on the mark as a tribute to the leadership philosophy of ike and marshall that won the war (rooting out the "Old Man" commanders whereever possible and promoting men like Roberts on merit), and a scathing indictment of the old guard that whined and moaned about the changes. I'm sort of reminded of the life and death of colonel blimp, but I saw that so long ago I can't find the right way to clarify the comparison.

Still an outstanding and extremely entertaining film, one I'll probably buy if it ever comes out in a better edition.

Key Largo - 9 of 10
Stars list - Edward G Robinson
Stars list - Lauren Bacall

Great noir with Bogey and Bacall. Edward G Robinson plays the heavy, an exiled gangster who's planning on making a play and moving back into the states (from Cuba). Bogart shows up at Key Largo to tell the family running a hotel how their son died in the war (the son was under his command) and gets mixed up in the gangster goings on that have descended upon the key and hotel. Lionel Barrymore is still around doing a great job, and the chemistry between B&B is as amazing as it always is. One of their best.

John Huston's direction is absolutely superb, terrific editing, particularly during the hurricane, and stunning noir photography make this an absolute gem to watch (I've actually been meaning to watch it for nearly seven years now, but just now got around to it )

Seven Days in May - 10 of 10
Stars list - Kirk Douglas
Stars list - Ava Gardner
OARDVD 030708

An utterly incredible John Frankenheimer political thriller about an attempted coup of the United States goverenment. From the stunning opening titles you know you're in for something special. The film opens on a riot outside the white house just after the senate has ratified a nuclear disarmanment treaty with russia. And the joint chiefs aren't very happy about it. Fredrich March plays President Lyman who has overseen the treaty. Burt Lancaster plays the chairman of the joint chiefs, Kirk Douglas plays his legal assistant and Ava Gardner plays Lancaster's former lover. A few odd things come to Douglas' attention and soon he's suspicious that a highly secretive coup is in the works to overthrow the presidency and install a military dictator. As more pieces fall into place the days until the coup tick away and time becomes shorter and the stakes become higher. Simply extraordinary from start to finish with utterly superb performances from every participant. The editing, photography and score are especially noteworthy, all are breathtaking. Fabulous film.

Adam,

You've been watching some great ones lately - Mr. Roberts, Key Largo, Seven Days in May - all fantastic.

I won't say too much cause of the forum rules, but I think that Seven Days in May is particularly relevant in today's political atmosphere - Gen. James Matoon Scott would fit in quite well with the current administration.

Re: AFI 100 Years Series Discussion & Challenges, vol. 2

We watched The Bridge of the River Kwai yesterday. It's only the second David Lean movie I've seen, the first being Lawrence of Arabia, and I was skeptical that it could live up to such an amazing film. Let's just say that my skepticism was misplaced. It's a spectacularly well made film. My favorite part of the film is the battle of wills between Nicholson and Saito. Even though I understood the viewpoints of both sides, I had a giant grin on my face when Nicholson was let out of the oven. It's those kind of scenes that make movies really special.

What David Lean movie should we see next?

Bridge on the River Kwai is one of my favorite movies and my first introduction to the great david lean. One I should revisit sometime soon.

Elmer Gantry - 9 of 10
Stars list - Burt Lancaster
tcm - 03/10/08

Burst Lancaster and Jean Simmons are phenomenal in this film. Set in 1920s Nebraska, Gantry is a traveling salesman who was once killed out of seminary years before for fooling around with the girls too much. he's still fooling around with the girls too much. And he's down on his luck, basically a bum, hoboing it down the railroad tracks. He comes into Sister Sharon Falconer's revival and he is in love. Not just with the woman but with her whole enterprise. it's what he wants to be doing preaching and grandstanding before an appreciative rapt audience. Perhaps that might make a difference in their lives but its the attention and respect he craves. He works and worms his way onto the staff and then up and becomes a crowd warmer for Sister Sharon whose rhetoric is much more beatific than his. Revivalism is all the rage in the country as the conservative values recently etched into law with prohibition clash with resistence to those edicts. Gantry has a past, and Sister Sharon has dreams, and they both desperately want to be legitimate, but they may not be that, they may simply be human, only able to work the ordinary evangelism, unable to change the country--and that may be enough. Or it might not. Arthur Kennedy play

An incredible script, just a mesmerizing film from start to finish. I'm tempted to buy it because I think I'd like it even more on repeat viewings. Arthur Kennedy, as the reporter covering the revival is exceptional as well.

The Kid - 8 of 10
Stars list - Charlie Chaplin
031308 tcm

Finally filled in this gap in my chaplin films. It's a charmer and Jackie Coogan is very good as the title role. A woman abandons her child (out of wedlock) only the ritzy car she left it in is stolen and when the thieves discover the baby they abandon it in the street. Moment's later the little tramp discovers it and after attempting to foist the baby off on someone else decides to raise it as his own. Flash forward five years to the two of them scraping and scamming by, quite the interdependent and charming pair. Naturally they evade the law, the boy gets in a fight that leads to Chaplin getting in a fight and the boy gets sick and his mother, who is now a successful actress discovers him. When the doctor comes he discovers the boy is an orphan and sicks the orphanage on the boy and Chaplin and the Kid must evade the authorities determined to separate them. After a humorous dream sequence in heaven it all ends happily.

Chaplin is in fine form throughout and the film looks surprising excellent for vintage 1920.

The Kid is great. It's the earliest Chaplin I've seen where he's hit his stride. His early shorts are sometimes funny, but too short to tell a story, and where Chaplin excelled was in mixing pathos and comedy, and the shorts didn't have enough time to do so. I do have Shoulder Arms recorded from TCM, and that predates the Kid, so we'll see where that fits in.

East of Eden - 10 of 10
stars list - James Dean
oardvd 03/28/08

Canted angles!!!

(yes they deserve three exclamation points because they are everywhere)

despite that (you know they show the skewed and destabilizing world of the family) this film is outstanding with great cinematography, script, performances. But it's really the final 20 minutes that transform this into a great film.

James Dean and Richard Avalos are twin brothers, raised by their father (Raymond Massey) ignorant that their mother is still alive and running a brothel. Dean is a rebellious, troubled youth who discovers the truth and he doesn't know how to deal with his father and family any more. What's more his brother's girlfriend, Abra, is really in love with him. It all comes crashing down in the finale when his father spurns Dean for the final time (granted Dean was trying to buy love he'd never gotten in the first place) and the simmering conflict between him and his brother comes to a head.

Fabulous, a movie that just keeps getting better as it plays on.

Re: AFI 100 Years Series Discussion & Challenges, vol. 2

Houseboat - 6 of 10
stars list - Sophia Loren

filmed in VistaVision with Cary Grant this is a fairly humdrum 'romantic' comedy. Grant's wife has been killed in an auto accident months ago. He and his three children (boy girl boy) live with his sister-in-law, but they're moving back into DC now that things have sort of settled down again. The boys are given decent characterizations but the girl's main moment is that she is afraid of thunder. the youngest boy runs off in protest the night they move back and straight off he encounters Sophia Loren running off from her oppressive Italian father to have a night of fun on the town. They hit the midway together, have a good time and she brings him home and asks Cary Grant to hire her as a maid (she's with her father touring america and is very rich, but he doesn't know how to do that). Grant naturally rebuffs her but the next day she shows up again and he has to admit he needs aid handling his three kids as they're moving. They're moving out into the country because Grant decided the city was too dangerous after the youngest boy ran off. On the way some very unlikely circumstances cause them to settle in a dilapidated houseboat instead and various circumstances (wait for it, shocker coming up) cause Grant and Loren to fall in love. then various situations crop up to prevent them from getting married. There is one very nice moment with the eldest son as Grant tries to bridge the gulf that's occured between them since his wife's death, and it is one of the better points of the film and script. Nothing like a son giving his father a fishing lesson to go over some of lifes harder truths about life and death.

The photography is pretty good, Loren is gorgeous throughout and Grant makes a bland script much more real and human than it was written. But it lacks the charm and wit of the Parent Trap, which is a pretty fair comparison.

Twelve O'Clock High - 10 of 10
Stars list - Gregory Peck

One hell of a war film. Twelve O'Clock High is about the airforce use of precision daylight bombing in wwii and the men who managed to do it. the 918th division of the airforce is in bad shape, their commander cares so much about them that poor discipline in the air and on the ground has resulted. General Savage is sent in to relieve the commanding officer and he begins restoring and enforcing discipline wherever he sees an infraction. While it starts off slow, once Gregory Peck, as Savage, appears the film becomes electric, almost energetic. his presence ennervates the film as well as the men under his command. a fantastic film.
