I think I saw those both on the same day...and they couldn't possibly be more different!!

Millions plastered a grin onto my face and kept it there for 90 minutes.

Oldboy had me scratching my head, fascinated, periodically sickened and entirely engrossed.

Rented an indecipherable piece of DTV weirdness called Bullfighter and took in the predictably disappointing White Noise, which is a stew comprised entirely of The Forgotten, Final Destination, Frequency and (of course) The Sixth Sense. I hope it makes some money just for the sake of Michael Keaton's career (I like the guy), but the flick's an absolute snoozer. Prime January material all the way. Darnit.

Well, the 2005 movies are slowly getting better. Sometime in February, they may make the leap to watchable.

(positions 1-15 are things I saw at previews/festivals in '03 and '04)
#16: White Noise - ¼ - Downright insulting horror movie. I defy anyone to make sense of the end.
#17: Hide and Seek - ½ - Slightly less stupid "thriller". Can't even do "by the book" right.
#18: Monsieur N. - ¾ - Weak French/English coproduction speculating about Napoleon's last days. The actor playing Napoleon is good, though.

Just caught the inexhaustable Kim Ki-duk's 3-Iron--quite an interesting capture of an inarguably odd relationship within the urban sprawl. Reminded me of Tsai Ming-liang's work in that aspect. It fit in well with Kim's other works that I've seen, notably Samaria, which features another unexpected pairing. I don't know how well the minimal dialogue model works in these two cases, without the allegory and unique setting of Spring, Summer...

finally went and caught a film from 05 this weekend, The Animation show opened in LA and some friends and I caught it opening night, afterwards Hertzfeldt, Cornwall (dir. Ward 13), and Mike Judge were there for Q and A which was cool. Following this up with a couple hours chilling and discussing the film at Canter's Deli made for an excellent night.

The sad thing is that with Because of Winn Dixie from Walden and Constantine being released this weekend there were three flicks I wanted to see but got no chance to, and I still want to see Hitch as well.
