Battlestar Galactica: Season 2 - SciFi US broadcast thread

More importantly...how popular will Starbuck be when she returns to Galactica with a box full of cigars?

Bring back John Doe! Or at least resolve the cliff-hanger with a 2hr movie or as an extra on a dvd release.

I had assumed it would again be a 13 ep season thats the norm for a cable show. Does anyone know why they changed the music and opening from last year? I kinda like the "Space 1999" like this episode recap. They also changed the music for the Dead Zone and made it worse. Why do they muck with these things?

Anyhow I thought it to be an OK Start, and I fear Starbuck may take Boomers spot and stay with Helo. Since they already spent one season with Helo on Caprica I kinda wish they would wrap this story up it seems to be spinning it wheels, after all the Galactica keeps jumping further and further away how long can they hope to stay within range of caprica?

I for one would like to see Helo get back to Galactica and interact with everyone.

Greetings

The music changed because they decided they liked the british opening music more than the US version.

The opening is shortened so that they can show more commercials.

Greetings

In some sense, the british opening music was the original one. Someone at SciFi decided they didn't like it so it was changed.

Just think of this as going back to the Original music. Of course both versions have their supporters.

I guess we should watch the "death meter" at the beginning of the show. It is supposed to change from show to show as people die.

I also enjoyed the homage to Space:1999 ... but lost for the sake of commercials.

Funny, during last season, it seemed like everyone completely HATED it because it usually contained spoilers of one form or another.

I didn't like it, but I have the ability to change the channel.... Glad to see it gone.

It does and it should be very interesting to see how many people were killed last week.

I liked the second episode better than the first. If we're going to crawl at a snail's pace, it's more tolerable with some good character development, which is what we got last week.

That said, the Caprica thread does need to pick up. It's been embarassingly slow from day one. Add in Starbuck and the Arrow (which, by the way, we still don't know whether the Arrow has any real value), I'd like to see some resolution.

Sorry but at least a few here do not agree. I have no problem with less action and a lot of good character development drama. For example, I loved STAND & DELIVER, Olmos's charcterization was great, and there wasn't a lot of action in most of that. But in the Caprica scenes and Kobol scenes, I did not get this from those scenes last week. They just seemed like slow filler. Sure we got to see a little about Starbuck's past, but IMHO they spent way too long showing us that, with not much else accomplished. I also wish they'd cut down some on the Baltar dream sequences. They seem to drag on way too long, and all they really seem to show us is he's a nut case. I'm not saying cut them out completely, but keep them to the point and move back to the story. I do like the new BSG very much. I am sure things will progress interestingly. I guess I just feel there is so much more to tell about their journey to Earth, meeting up with Pegasus, and who knows what else. Especially the Caprica story seems like it should have ended. Helo knows Boomer is a Cylon. I can't believe Starbuck let her geet her ship. I hope they do find a Raptor and get back to the fleet soon. Then we can see Helo deal with finding out that the Sharon back there is also a Cylon.

In the past two eps they probably spent less than two minutes each on the Baltar scenes.

The writers are obviously creating a myth-arc. I for one don't mind all the character development. It makes for much more interesting stories. I'm sure the payoff is going to be great.

Cut back on Baltar? He hasnt even been on screen much in the first two episodes, yet His story is directly linked to the main story of the show.

OK, maybe the actual time with the Baltar dreams hasn't been that long, (I haven't timed them). But I guess it just seems real long. Partly because before I watched any of the new season I had re-watched the last 3 episodes from last season. So taken together, it just seemed like a lot of this. I apologize for my mistake.

I too think the payoff of things will be great. Guess I'm just anxious to see it.

I think the issue with Baltar's dream sequences is that they can be overly long and much more of his limited time on screen is spent in a dream sequence than the "real" world. Before he lived in the real world and occassionally had dreams. Now he lives in the dream world and occassionally wakes up.

I think the difference is that in season 1, most of the time he was hallucinating (sorry if I botched a medical term of art), by which I mean Six was talking to him while he was interacting in the real world. So he was still interacting with real characters and the plot could advance. Occasionally, he was just outright dreaming, but it didn't happen all that often. In season two, he has more often been outright dreaming and not only is Six a figment of his imagination, but so also is Adama for example. This may help us learn something about the Baltar/Six love child or the Cylons, but it, to me, is a cheap device for explaining something to us that they can't do through interaction of the "real" characters in "real" situations.

It's kinda like how I feel about movies with narrators. Let me learn through the actors acting. If I wanted someone to simply tell me a story, I'd read a book.

They are developing characters. I've ready in several articles that they are trying to show all the walls coming down that Starbuck has up. You need some quiet moments to do this.
I think it's great to have more character development as opposed to Voyager and Enterprise but whatever floats your boat.

Saying that they're doing character development doesn't address anything for me. I end up saying, "OK, but they're not doing it in a very interesting way for me."

I wouldn't conclude that because some people aren't fully enjoying the character development that they're somehow incapable of enjoying complex entertainment. Voyager and Enterprise don't enter my mind at all when viewing or discussing BSG. Voyager and Enterprise are Sci Fi shows. BSG, to me, is a Drama (with a capital D) set in a fictional universe. Even though I like Sci Fi, it's the drama aspect of BSG that grabbed me. The Science Fiction is... incidental.

I have faith, though. It'll pick up. Nobody bats 1.000.

Well put Mikah. Some of the way they are choosing to show the character development is weak. That does not mean that those of us who feel this way do not appreciate character development or just need a bunch of action. As I said, I am fine with good drama. I just think they have made some poor choices in how to show a couple of things.

But, I too have faith things will pick up.

It is funny how different people react differently. I thought eps 1 and 2 of season 2 were just about as gripping as anything I have ever seen on TV.

But, if we were all the same, if we all felt the same way about the story line of a particular drama, then each and every drama would be exactly the same.

7/29 episode

No Starbuck and Helo!

No change in Adama's status.

Crashdown Crashes.

This weeks's war battle worked for me a bit more than previous ones this season. When Tyrol went yippie ki yay, the tension worked for me.

The most interesting part of the story for me this week is the political / military intrigue involving Tigh. He's a disloyal move away from being "The Man". For instance, if he didn't let the doctor dock for whatever reason, bye-bye Adama. I had half a mind to check the internet to make sure EJO is supposed to be around for awhile. Tigh is certainly capable of doing the wrong thing since he doesn't seem bound by morality. About the only truly positive trait we've seen from him is loyalty to Adama. But really, nothing he does would surprise me -- especially with Ms. McTigh on his shoulder whispering into his ear. For a guy like him who perpetually has one foot in the Wrong Thing pot to begin with, she's poison for him. With good writing, she could be the next best female villan to Ms. Palmer from 24. Just insidious.

A small note, but I'm glad they addressed why the President's aide was free to roam. It was a nit I was going to post last week, but then I wasn't sure I remembered it correctly and never had the chance to go back and check.

I'm still having a hard time believing Boomer abandoned Helo, but no movement on that front yet. We'll see.

Still not enjoying this as much as last year but it's not as new and shiney as it was then. That could be part of it.

I did like this better than the first 2 episodes though. Tigh needs a divorce and a spell in a drunk tank for as long as it takes. He's just given the quorum and the people a prophet/messiah. And then he implements martial law. He has got to be kidding. Look at that guard for instance. If he had to chose between orders and his faith I think his faith would win.

The battle stuff was pretty good. Baltar as the idiot who lies and then saves the day by taking out the Lt. Probably the best result all around there. Less impact for the VP to make that sort of decision than for the other guy to shoot an officer.

The stuff wit Sex was better in this episode. Her actions with Baltar were interesting. Just what are 'they' trying to turn him into? Hmm.

I'm also reflecting to see what's not working for me and why. One thing is I watched the miniseries and S1 in a marathon with no commercials. Aside from not having the momentum of the episodes broken up (going from a Cylon war to Pampers commercials has to have some impact), my cable system looks pretty crappy, so the DVD's looked much better.

Even when I allow for those things, though, it still feels to me like the miniseries and S1 had a limited time to say what they wanted to say, and hit the ground running to do so. It isn't just that the show is old hat now; it's that the stories aren't as compelling (so far). In fact, I'd bet that if anyone who hasn't been bowled over by S2 went back and watched S1, they'd still like S1 -- even though it is old hat at this point. The mini and S1 were good stuff -- amongst the best I've seen on TV. S2 may not meet those lofty levels, but may be quite good in its own way. We'll see.

I think you're selling Tigh short. Tigh is great in military situations: back in "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down" his military instincts caused him to launch the alert fighters in order to intercept the malfunctioning Cylon raider before it could destroy his ship. Even last week, it was his experience and his knowledge of Cylon tactics that saved Galactica. Tigh's a military man, who wants nothing to do with the political side of things, while Adama has the background to straddle the two lines, his father being a constitutional lawyer. What's getting Tigh into so much trouble, actually, is his stubborn loyalty to Adama, more than anything else. His insistence that there be no networked computers aboard nearly cost them their only viable option to find the fleet last week, and also his desire preserve the status quo until Adama returns to action, rather than to adapt to the situation indicates that he's not a bad person, but rather a great strategic military mind who has absolutely no political finesse. In his mind, he has no desire for a command of his own, but would rather keep things as they are until the Old Man can come back to take over.

Anyone else notice there was absolutely no Boomer (Caprica or Galactica) in the last two weeks?

I too was a little let down by how things were going this week. At least the Kobol stuff was better than the last couple of episodes. I just think they're taking a little too long setting up whatever they're setting up.

Still, I expect things will get better and I'm giving this show full room to grow.

I'm glad to see that I'm not nuts and there are others who think season 2 is a little off, at least so far.
