I'm chumping at the bit for the 990 also Dean.My IB needs about one more week til completion.Come on free time from work,I need more please

You could always move to Florida, AKA "God's Waiting Room", and be semi retired like me.

Well, after visiting that other (anti)Maggie thread over at avs forum,I can honestly say,TG for HTF.At least there is one place on the net were audio is discussed in an open and friendly format.

I agree. It seems to me that there is much less snobbery, and more friendliness and good natured ribbing here. That whole thread is about as senseless as an argument over whether cauliflower tastes good or not. One has to actually try it to decide for themselves whether they like it or not.
Personally, I think Maggies are much better than cauliflower.

Anyone who knows anything knows that cauliflower is totally lacking in dynamics.

'6': You're right....thanks for setting me straight. Nothing can compare to HTF or our little Maggie corner of the universe here in this thread By the way, your are now at least partially responsible for my HT since your recommendation of the PB-10 has resulted in an order for one It may not be a DIB, but I have high expectations for this little guy. I re-read Ed's post from last Spring, before it was released, and the guy was just amazed by it. I don't expect it to compete with the PB12-ISD/2 it is replacing, but it also doesn't have near the space to fill either. Anyway, it'll be here Wednesday hopefully

'M' Give who hell? (*evil grin*)

Dean-O: Don't get me started on the dynamics of various fruits and vegetables. It may be that cauliflower grown 15-20 years ago had that as a valid criticism, but here in North Georgia I'm sure I can find many local farmers who will substantiate the improved dynamics of this particular vegetable. Actually I did stay up a good part of the night, but I certainly won't admit it was to hear back from YOU lol. I was busy with my online poker career, watching "Shall We Dance" (don't laugh.....I had to.....besides, it was actually, um, pretty good!), and partaking in another highly confidential activity (you know, the whole "could tell you, but have to kill you" type of thing). You know, I was thinking, if you are more likely to attach the 1.6s to an entertainment center than to have them on the floor, you may want to keep tabs on Magnepan's plans to have a MC1-type speaker with the true ribbon tweeter. That may actually end up being a better option for you......just a thought

Is there any more info on the 'net about the MC1 type true ribbons? I wasn't aware that any were in the works. I know that Magnepan is coming out with a true ribbon center, but ~$2500 each is more than I want to spend.

I heard on the MUG that it was supposed to be in the works following the release of the ribbon center.....I'm going to call Magnepan tomorrow to ask them about the MMG=>1.6 upgrade, so I'll ask the nice lady for some details when I do. I agree that $2500 is pretty steep for a center.....but if they release some MC1-type ribbon speakers for a little more than the 1.6s, may be something to consider given what you are trying to do with your mains. On the other hand, I heard Magnepan comes out with a new product once in a blue moon, so I guess we'll just have to see lol

Z,

Well I sold my MC1s and CC3 to a fellow HTFer from Canada. Plus as you know, I got that Marsh P2000T hybrid tube preamp. I have just hired someone to replace the suspended ceiling in my basement listening room with top of the line Armstrong acoustic panels. I am also in the process of upgrading all of my power cords and interconnects. Now I am trying to decide between a Richard Gray or a PS Audio power center. I will be selling my Monster HTS5000 power center with ten outlets as I only need a few!!

A few weeks ago I bought some new seating for my listening room. I got the 3 seat version of this in beige!!

My next component upgrade will probably be a higher end CD player. After all else is in place, I may very well be in the market for some 3.6s!!

Those 1.6s with Mye Sound stands would look and sound great in Dean's place, or yours, Z!!

Wow, you are going to town over there! So are you basically finding the 1.6s are responding favorably to improvements in your gear to the degree that you are considering keeping them over an upgrade to the 3.6s?

If I could find someone local that had the knowledge and the skills to do a xover mod to my 1.6s, I would probably go that route for now. If I can mod the 1.6s, from what I read over at the MUG, it really makes a world of difference. I may try to find that person soon. If I can't mod the 1.6s, 3.6s are in my near future!!

How you liking your maggies by now?? Thinking of upgrading aren't you?? Maggies are the only way to go. My dad came down to my new house last Sunday for the first time, he really liked my house, and he loved the maggies. He has a real nice system with Dynaudio Audience speakers. He really liked the width and depth that my 1.6s have. He was impressed!! That made me feel good...coming from a retired electrical engineer who has been into audio since I was knee high to a grasshopper!!

Hey, maybe I should talk to dad about my desire to mod the 1.6s. He might can do it or know someone who could!!

Yep, I'm like you.....I wish I had the know-how to do some of these mods. I don't know about you, but I'd probably do more harm than good! That is pretty impressive that your dad thought the 1.6s compared favorably to the Dynaudios.....I have never heard that line, but they are supposed to be among the better box speakers, aren't they?

And yeah, I've really grown quite attached to Maggie I'm sure that I could stick with the MMGs and be quite satisfied, but I'm thinking the 1.6s MAY actually be that 5-10 year solution that I've been searching for in audio. When I recently went to my dealer to listen to some gear, that was the first time that I didn't see aspects of other speakers that appealed to me more than what I own. Usually I'd go in there and think to myself, "wow, I wish I could afford those Energy Veritas....or those JM Labs.....etc". I had the Paradigm Signature line right next to some Maggies and heard them in direct comparison. I looked at my dealer and said, "you know, I think I've become a planar guy". The Sigs are very, very good speakers......but when you are used to Maggies, any box speaker will leave you feeling like someone took some life out of the music/soundtrack. So yeah, I have 1.6s on the radar and will hopefully make them a birthday present to myself by the end of next month.....then I'll add some Mye stands and enjoy

Thanks P. it's only been a few days, but I'm now a devout follower of the IB Cult. All I need now is a cheap suit, a bicycle, along with some snazzy pamphlets, and I can start going door to door.
If you decide to upgrade to the 3.6s, would you keep me in mind for your 1.6s? I would like to have a shot at them (assuming you would be willing to ship them)if you decide to sell.

Dean, heres a link to the tweaks section on the MUG site.Lots of pictures of stands made by folks(including the MYE stands)

Thanks, I'll look them over and see what I can come up with for ideas. I'm thinking oak dowels for the struts and oak 2" x 4" milled to make the feet and frame. If I can find the angles and measurements online, I should be able to come up with a nice design by the end of the day. It's either that or I have to go work in the yard today toting rocks and dirt.

I got out of doing the rocks and dirt. I found a good deal on some Aspen lumber, so with a little weaseling I'm now building a whole new entertainment center. It will be 52 inches wide which should leave plenty of room for a certain pair of speakers when I start sucking up for those. I'm a mad genius I tell ya!

That's awesome that you are so skilled with the DIY stuff....I have to say, I'm proud of that chisel I made back in 7th grade....but I don't think I would do anywhere near as good a job as you are doing....Maybe 'M' can give you a run for your money, but I sure can't lol....keep up the good work, bro!

By the way, I don't know if you guys have read it, but here is a review dating back to 2000 that discusses the 1.6s and 3.6s abilities with regards to 'dynamics'. You have to scroll down a ways, but it's there

I honestly could care less what someone (present company excluded, of course) chooses as far as speakers go. But I'm really tired of a handful of these naysayers who listened to Maggies two decades ago and assume that their former shortcomings hold true today.

Anyway, here is the article....

I started the thread because I'd heard so little about the Maggie HT,and I figured I'd share my experience.Little did I know I'd meet addicts like myself .

Don't feel alone guys,I come home and cant wait to see what you all have been up to also.

I forgot to mention something in my update list for my 2 channel system. I may have said something to you over at the MUG. About 2 months ago I got a MartinLogan Depth sub to fill in the bottom end of my 1.6 maggies.

http://www.martinlogan.com/depth_speaker.html#

It blends very, very well with the maggies. very fast, very musical. I can't wait to get my room done so I can complete my system. (Should I keep the 1.6s for a while, or get the 3.6s now??) Decision, decisions!!

That's interesting about that sub....I've heard ML speakers before, but I honestly don't remember if their subwoofer was hooked up for the demo or not. Anyway, do you think the ability to blend has anything at all to do with the 8" drivers? I don't know enough about it to speculate a whole lot, but it would just seem to me that a smaller driver would mate better with the Maggies (except for the DIB, which is probably an entirely different animal). That's part of the reason why I went ahead and ordered a PB-10.....if that doens't blend well then I'll eventually pass it along to my bro and get something else. By the way, the review I posted above is very pertinent to a decision between the 1.6s and 3.6s. The reviewer had experience with both (in addition to many other prior Maggies), and it's interesting to hear his take on things.

M: I think I've definitely become addicted to Maggie I love the way she looks, the way she sounds, and the way she gets up to make me a sandwich and get me a beer. Okay, so I'm still working on that last one.....but two out of three ain't bad!

Dean/M: How funny that the dude from the other forum is all taken by Maggies now LOL. He's not even going for the MMGs; it's straight to the 1.6s and a CC3! That's awesome.....

I thought that was pretty funny, especially after all the naysayers put in their two cents. "Oh, you like horns? Well, you'd NEVER like the sound of Maggies then... "

Dean: Thanks for the offer lol.....I started my "maggie fund" today for the 1.6s, but if for some reason the PB10 doesn't work out I may take you up on that

As for the guy in the other forum, I'm really excited that he went and listened. I understand that people who owned Maggies 10-20 years ago maybe had issues with certain aspects of them. But I have yet to read a negative review of ANY Maggie model. The current line up is nearly universally praised and people really need to go listen with their own ears before they spew some of this inaccurate crap. Thankfully the kid was smart enough to see through it, and now he's a new Maggie fan. Good for him, I say!

M: I totally agree. Though I have to admit, being that my first Maggie experience was with MMGs straight from the factory, my first experience was more like "hey, for $550 that's pretty damn good!"........Of course, a month later when they were broken in and I was watching 'Cast Away', I was completely enthralled and was comparing them to my former Paradigm studio/100s. Today I view the Maggie sound as being like nothing else! That other guy likely heard a broken-in pair of 1.6s, so he was helpless LOL. Maggie took hold of his ears like a hot, buxom blonde takes hold of our eyes
