As for myself, I saw no point in hoping that Dark Sky would even acknowledge their errors, much less fix them. Since I don't want to reward shoddy work by purchasing the disc, I gave up. I've seen "Chainsaw" ten thousand times by now, and I certainly don't need it in my collection.

Someday, someone will do right by this film, and if I'm still interested I'll buy it then. I'm very glad to hear that Dark Sky's sales were pitiful (and hope it's true).

It's not like the sales would have been siginificantly better if the audio had been right.

I think they might have been. All the fans who were waiting to upgrade, but didn't because of the audio cock-ups, would have. I have the old MPI laserdisc, and was waiting waiting waiting for it to come out in a definitive edition on DVD. The first DVD was botched, and now this one is too. I'm not buying it. If they fix it, I will.

Re: New 2-Disc Region 1 NTSC DVD of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" (1974) in the works!

I can't prove you wrong but I really don't think there's that many people that were actually going to buy it but stopped solely based on the messed up audio. Most people don't know and even of those that do, that didn't stop them from buying it. The problem with the sales probably has more to do with that the movie is a small title, it's been released before, and it needed to sell alot of copies to make up for all the money that they spent on it.

I can look further back in this thread and see a person who only seems to post so he can piss and moan to the world. It's safe to assume that he was never going to buy it but he sure wasn't going to miss a chance to whine. Now, that's not everyone (and those that are complaining are right to since there's an error) but I still don't think the audio crippled sales.

A question: where does the information of the disc's bad sales come from, is it posted somewhere? I mean you don't see many studios posting the sales figures of individual discs very often.

If you are referring to me Travis, you are wrong. I had been looking forward to this title for a long time. And though disappointed with the audio, enjoyed the dvd very much. That being said, TCM is a classic and should have been treated as such. Video means very little when the audio is overlooked.

I have no actual sales numbers and may be completely wrong, but I have a feeling this DVD actually did sell quite well. I think the problem was DarkSky just spent way too much money on the remastering, the extras, the advertising, etc. - so that even pretty decent sales numbers were quickly dissolved by the costs they had incurred putting this package together. Just makes me wish that they hadn't spent so much energy and money on 2 million extras (that I may watch one time at most) instead of just focusing on getting the film itself right. I mean, come on, the earlier disc already had a commentary, deleted scenes, bloopers etc. - and there are already feature-length documentaries on the making of the film out there as well. Just gve us the complete movie with its correct soundtrack please. Sounds so simple, but yet seems so elusive.

By the way, my guess that the sales figures were relatively decent is pure conjecture. I do know that on the Tuesday when it was released, I was at Best Buy in the morning and picked it up. There were at least 50 copies in the "new release" rack and some more in the horror section. I had to go back to Best Buy in the early evening that same day and noticed that the spot they were in in the new release section was completely 'sold out' (or at least empty). Looks to me like they flew off the shelf that day, at least in the store I went to. I know that really doesn't mean squat overall, but I do think this title sold quite a few copies. Dark Sky probably just spent WAY too much on it.

No, I wasn't referring to you. You're among the people that I could see was into the release before it was released. I'm somewhat sorry that I made my the post above since it's vague and can lead to people thinking I'm trashing them when that's not the case but I still think what I said was basically correct.

Re: New 2-Disc Region 1 NTSC DVD of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" (1974) in the works!

Travis, if you're referring to me, you're just as wrong. I don't know when I first posted to this thread, but I was all over the original "Tx Chainsaw Massacre" release thread, when they transferred the non-restored version in a monumental cock-up. Since then, I've defended the film as one of the best horror films of all time in many threads here and elsewhere, and I've highly anticipated every single (re)-release of this film hoping for one that's restored, anamorphic, and not otherwise screwed-up.

In short, I think you're being awfully presumptive, whomever you're referring to. Basically correct? No. I think it's apparent that the vast majority who have expressed their ire in this thread are big fans of the film who hoped to see it finally done right on DVD and are deeply disappointed that it wasn't.

And, fwiw, I didn't buy this release specifically because of the audio problems.

I'm not referring to you either. You're right, I am being presumptive but, as I've said, the person that I am referring to pretty much only posts complaints so I don't think I'm wrong in assuming that they posted about this just to have something else to complain about. Now that he's done that (and doesn't give a shit about the movie), he probably hasn't read the thread in months.

It's me isn't it Travis.......you've cut me....you've cut me deep.

I have to ask though:

I'm optimistic that Dark Sky will correct this. They were about to release Eaten Alive and found a better print and scrapped all the work that they did so they could release a better product. It may take awhile but I think they'll fix TCM too.

This film is not by any stretch of the imagination a small title. It's one of the most famous horror films in horror film history. Everyone's heard of it. And Dark Sky should step up to the plate and fix their release, dammit dammit dammit.

Has anyone talked to Don May about the audio glitches in the transfer? I'd be interested to see what he has to say.

At that time, I was optimistic that it would be fixed. I isn't optimisitc anymore either.

Stephen, I think earlier in the thread it was said that Don May only covered the video on the disc and not the audio.

He was hired to supervise the HD film-to-tape transfer and image clean-up and that's the extent of his involvement*. He handed the D5 master over the Dark Sky and they put the DVD together and handled all the mastering, audio, etc. I know he wasn't happy about the audio mistakes on the released DVD. TCM is one of his favorite films.

Vincent

* And of course all the extras which were carried over from the Elite LaserDisc and Pioneer DVD- obviously, he supervised that stuff way back when as well.

Re: New 2-Disc Region 1 NTSC DVD of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" (1974) in the work

That's funny. I was eyeing this release since last year when it was over $20, but held off because of the problems talked about on this exact thread. I saw it on Amazon for this price a couple days ago and even hunted down this thread and re-read it, to refresh my memory about the problems. I waivered but eventually just said "screw it!" and pulled the trigger. I'm not that familiar with the movie that the audio problems should bother me, though I wished they had been corrected.

Funny to see this thread pop up after searching for it just yesterday.

If you havent seen the movie for years, you wont notice the missing audio. But added up through the entire film, its less than 1 minute. The transfer on here is so good that I had to overlook the audio omissions.I cant imagine if the dvd gets rereleased on hidef or bluray that it would look more than a tiny bit better, the transfer here is that good.

I'm so tempted. But the problems just bother me. Still, I'll probably upgrade sometime in the future. At least just to see how much better it all looks.
