Acoustic panels

Hello Everyone,

I am really pleased I stumbled across this forum. I am about halfway through constructing a dedicated HT. I am shooting 200W - 7.1 with dual subs in a room size 26 x 16ft.
I have researched all I can with regard acoustic panels....absorbtive,reflective,diffusive, and I am now constructing the acoustic panels as the prefab ones are just way to expensive for my liking. The panels are covering the walls all the way around and forms part of the decor. If I use the 6lb absorbtive fiberglass behind the fabric in all the panels, there would not be much reflective surface left.
-What material do the specialists use for reflective panels?
-Here is the real confusion for me, what is the formula to maintain a balance in the room. I cannot seem to get this info anywhere.
-Do I need to have the room sound tested?
-Is such a tool available for the rookie?
-Is it a necessity?

I used 1" thick Owens Corning 703 rigid fiberglass insulation. If you check out my theater you will see the amount used. It sounds great and I don't think that I would need any more.Basement HT

Thanks for the info. So did you only use the corning insulation and no other material? Who is the distributor for this insulation material.

Yes, The insulation is the only material I used except for the carpeting on the floor. Owens Corning does not deal with the general public. I had it shipped to me from L&L insulation located in Missouri. They shipped it COD. It was around $70.00 total for 6-1" and 4-2" panels 24" x 48".

One note though, They were supposed to e-mail me with the exact prise but never did. My wife got a call from FedEx stating they had a delivery and needed cash or money order.

I did the same thing but I went to a construction store they had the stuff for 12 dollars for a 4x8 sheet and I covered it with fabric using spray glue

Thanks, did this store sell it under the corning name brand or a different name?

Thanks for the tip about spray glue. Did you use 77 spray adhesive?

Hi JanH, Be careful not to use too many absorptive type panels. They should be used at the reflective points. If you are planning to use many panels, some should be the reflective type. You don't want a dead sounding room. I have 17 different panels in my room. Some are reflective and some absorptive.

That is my biggest concern.....creating a dead room. Which brings me back to part of my initial post, 'what is the formula to create the best combination of absortion and reflexion'

im trying to improve the acoustics of a room to play music in but also at the same time im broke. are there any items around the house i could use or any tricks i could sue to ghettorig it?
