i was having second thoughts about the Flynn set 'cause i really only wanted one of the films (Captain Blood) but at that price its seems kind of foolish to resist.
Paul,
Have you seen the other films? The reason why I ask is because some including I, think "The Sea Hawk" is a better film than "Captain Blood".

i originally saw Sea Hawk before Blood and enjoyed it, but i was excited when i finally got the chance to see Blood (we're talking mid 80s here) and afterwards it was my impression that i enjoyed it a lot more.
scenes from it have certainly stuck with me more than anything from SH.
the other films i can't honestly recall seeing or not.
i have the feeling i've seen one of his westerns before, but if so it didn't do anything for me. |
I can't count the number of times I've watched each of these Errol Flynn titles, so maybe, my perspective of them are loftier than others. I'm kind of surprise that you haven't seen some of these titles or just a distant memory of them.

Why was I under the impression that this came out yesterday and how do so many of you already have this??
Probably because the thread title says April 12th.

I had it on my calendar for the 19th, but when I saw this thread revived, I got excited thinking I was wrong. DOOOOHHHHHH!!

Would somebody that has the set and a scanner do me a favor?
dvdaficionado.com won't accept a separate submission for the documentary disc without cover art. Could someone scan the art and either host the pic online or send the pic to me via email?
I'd greatly appreciate it.

I've watched "Dodge City" and "The Sea Hawk" and so far I'm very happy with this boxset. I'll watch two more of them tomorrow morning. They will probably be "They Died with their Boots On" and "Captain Blood". I'm going to save "The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex" for last along with the documentary.

I'll be curious to hear others' reaction to the Captain Blood DVD, which I found a bit messy. I can't blame the transfer (people usually blame the transfer rather than the elements), which I'm sure is top-notch - but the elements are pretty worn at times and very dupey looking at times. It's nowhere near the quality of The Sea Hawk (it's actually closer to the twenty minutes of The Sea Hawk that were taken from a print). I also don't like the film nearly as much as The Sea Hawk, which is perfection.
I thought the video presentation of "Captain Blood" was fine and since, we have no idea what elements were used or what shape they were in, I'm not going to pass further judgement.
As far as the film itself, I already stated earlier in this thread, that I thought "The Sea Hawk" was a better film. It isn't by much, but the writing and acting were better along with superior staging of the battle scenes.

I ran a recently-struck 35mm studio print of CAPTAIN BLOOD today and the negative/element used to create it had some obvious problems - tears, printed-in dirt, dupey sections, etc. This sounds like a title where the elements have suffered from overuse, in addition to being shortened for the Dominant Pictures reissue in the 50s. Sounds like the DVD has some of the same issues, but certainly not enough to hamper the enjoyment of it. Looking forward to getting the box set on Tuesday!

Does anyone know who owns the rights to "The Adventures of Don Juan" and if there are any plans to release it anytime soon? It's my all time favorite Errol Flynn Movie.
It's a Warner title and a real possiblity for inclusion on a second Flynn boxset. This might be one of the tiles that Vincent Sherman already recorded a commentary for a future dvd release. On the Flynn documentary, he looked damn good for 98 years old. My guesses for the next Flynn boxset.

You know, after seeing the Adventures of Errol Flynn documentary, the one title that I'd really like to see would be Uncertain Glory. It just looked like an interesting film, something a bit off the standard path for Errol Flynn.

One of my guilty pleasures is an Errol Flynn film called "Rocky Mountain". It's a little western taking place out West near the end of the Civil War. I always liked this film for some reason, probably because of how it ended.

That story that Olivia de Havilland told about the kissing scene involving Flynn in Robin Hood was too funny.

I remembered reading a quote from her, many years ago in which she wonder
Warning Spoiler! Click to showif the off-screen relationship between her and Flynn had become fullfilled, whether she could've saved him from himself. I think she concluded that she probably would've failed. If you read between the lines of what both of them said in the past about each other, it would be reasonable to assume that they did love each other to a certain extent. I'm just guessing of course, but I think Flynn realized he was doomed and he thought enough of Olivia not to ruin her life.

Oops, I omitted one title that needs to belong to this set, if Warner does a six dvd boxset again without the documentary dvd. It is "The Charge of the Light Brigade". I know some might have problems with the film for one reason or another, but it's a childhood favorite of mine with one of the best battle scenes ever captured on film.
