Second X-Files Movie in 2006 (Now Maybe 2008?)

SPOOKY SPEAKS: The truth is out there about the long-awaited second X-Files flick. Actually, the truth was in Wednesday's USA Today, but that's neither here nor there. David Duchovny told the paper that he expects to shoot the sequel later this year or early in 2006. "It'll be a stand-alone horror movie," he said. "Mulder and Scully investigate one particular case that has nothing to do with alien life. It has to do with supernatural stuff."
I've been wondering if the next X-Files movie would ever happen, coming from Duchovny, this is good news.

I was thinking this would never happen. I gave up on the show for its last few seasons, but I really liked the first movie. This franchise is capable of great things.

Every 2nd or 3rd month Duchovny chimes in with an X-Files sequel tidbit. Its hard to really say if it will happen though - could an X-Files movie draw big box office nowadays?

Duchovny needs a job....

Good lord, there's nothing worse than the foul stench of desperation when someone wants to be famous.

For this movie they should just pretend that everything that came after the last movie didn't happen.

That's good news if it is accurate. For the most part, I always thought that the show was at it's strongest when it was doing the 'monster of the week' type episodes. I never much cared for most of the ongoing conspiracy episodes. Maybe I'm in the minority, but that's how I feel.

I liked both the monster of the week AND conspiracy episodes, at least those before the first movie (season 1-5). Season 6 was decent too but after that

I stopped watching after season5.

I thought Fox and Chris Carter had gone seperate ways.

I'd love a non-mythology movie (with Duchovny, Anderson AND Patrick), which might have more general appeal. But enough to be successful?

A new X-Files movie with Fox and Scully has a much better chance at being successful than the planned movies for Firefly and Babylon 5. IMHO, of course.

The mythology has definitely run it's course, a MOTW movie with some character development for Mulder and Scully would be best for the next movie.

I always felt the poor show really jumped the shark after they moved the production from Vancouver to L.A. for season 6. The first movie was still a solid effort, though, even if it ultimately didn't answer much or advance the 'mythology' in any significant way. Those stories on the show were always the most circular, confusing, and contradictory, anyway...it was far more fun as an anthology series with our heroes dropped into a different predicament every week. A second movie in this format, perhaps set sometime earlier in the show's history, could be a BLAST. It's not at all difficult to spin a good stand-alone yarn a little further back in a fictional timeline, after all A. Conan Doyle had Sherlock Holmes solve The Hound of the Baskervilles after the character was supposedly dead. Just having Mulder and Scully, old quirks intact, sleuthing around on the big screen again would be a great reminder of the potential the idea once had and still could have...

X Files...uh, what's The X Files? Oh wait! I really liked the first movie, but jeez, it's almost gotten to the point where kids will be asking the above question when the second movie is finally released!

And you believe, at heart, everyone's a killer...

Agreed, Ernest. I liked Firefly, but still don't quite get the film.
Whatever the form of another X-Files movie, I'm there.

I've been hearing rumors about this for a few years now. I'll believe it when I see it but werent Mulder and Scully not agents anymore when the series came to a close??

I felt that after the movie the show went down hill. They should have stopped while they were ahead.

So I am guessing D.D's movie career isnt as successful as he thought it would be?

Anxious for a second film, but I really always wanted to see Mulder and Scully, or at least Mulder, behind the wheel of a spaceship some day.

Maybe for X3, oh wait, we can't use that. XF3

Mulder and Scully could become intergalactic bounty hunters who discover great mysteries don't just occur on Planet Earth.

they're smart to ace the whole alien angle and make this movie more about some supernatural doohickey. i always thought the alien episodes sucked anyway.

Some of the ongoing conspiracy episodes were quite brilliant, especially the earlier ones. I personally consider the Cigarette Smoking Man to be TV's greatest villain ever. But it eventually got to be too convoluted. It got to the point where the conspiracy episodes played like that scene in The Princess Bride where Vizzini was trying to figure out which goblet of wine was poisoned.

IGN has an interview with David Duchovny on the chances of the next X-Files movie getting made. Here's the gist of the article:
Quote:
In the past couple of years, talk has again come up of another feature film, with Duchovny himself even mentioning earlier this year that it might be happening. Today, during IGN FilmForce's interview with David Duchovny, he all but confirmed a return to the series, possibly as early as next year. "Well, there's no script, but Chris tells me it's like early next year. I mean, you know, the guy wrote 150 of them. He could have a script by the end of the day. The fact that there's no script or treatment is not dissuasive, to use an X-File word. I would imagine, since the three major parties are willing; Chris, myself and Gillian, I know it will happen and I would imagine it will happen early next year. It's just a matter of everybody getting their needs met I guess."

With how the series ended, this movie almost has to be a mythology story in order to really wrap things up.
Warning Spoiler! Click to show
In the finale, Mulder and Scully end up on the run, the X-Files are shut down again and Mulder finds out that the alien invasion to wipe out the human race will be in December 2012.

So now instead of picking up where the very downbeat series finale finished, they're going to go with a standalone horror story?

if it's a conspiracy story, i'm not going to go.

if it involves some mutant vampire sucking the life out of everyone using their mental powers that they obtained from some rare mutated genetical experiment ... then i'm all there!

'nuff said!

I heard that it will be stand-alone, Monster of the Week, whatever. This is the show with which I began understand the mentality of fan-boyism. I like both pre and postOne Son (6X12), which is where I feel the split really is. Not exactly between seasons 5 and 6. I love the entire show. "Suspension of belief" and all.

Why not? Solving a deadly mystery plaguing a community and proving their value is the best way to get them back into the FBI. Then a normal franchise film series can begin, with the residue of the last two seasons of TV scraped off their shoes like so much cow poop.

I just want a good scary movie with Mulder and Scully, like a lot of the MOTW episodes in the earlier seasons. I always enjoyed the mythology arc too, but its run its course, especially the last couple of years of the show with the "supasoldiers" plot, and a lot of the characters that made the mytharc so engrossing those first few seasons like CSM, the Syndicate, and Krycek, are all gone, so I sat go with the MOTW for the next movie.

I'd like a MOTW film too, but the writers are going to have some 'splaining to do, since Mulder and Scully were hardly working for the FBI at the end of the series. Weren't they fugitives?

I don't have time enough to watch all these DVDs!
