Re: Dead Like Me cancelled

Its funny, I bought the two seasons of DLM for my friend for his graduation and told him "its the best show but only two seasons". Then I see this, this is awesome news. Hopefully the DVD will do well and it will be picked up as a tv show once again.

I dont know if this has been discuessed or not,
Warning Spoiler! Click to show
but Mandy Patinkin has left Criminal Minds so maybe he could at least pass the torch to the new guy or possibly even have a role in the new DLM

Ellen Muth LIVE, posing for pictures with YOU!!
Signing your cast....
Whatever they do at Dragon Con.
Patrick Sun started a thread on next weekend's Dragon Con in Atlanta.
Don't know why I read the front page of the program, I don't attend things like this, but, there was sweet little Ellen's name.
Hmmm, Atlanta isn't that far.

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled

Was flipping channels and caught the Scifi marathon Labor Day. Started halfway through the second episode. Ended up sticking around for the whole thing. Borrowed copies from friends as I'm working my way through the first season. I bought season two at Best Buy today. Needless to say, the direct to DVD movie is terrific news — and "Pushing Daisies" just found a place on my schedule.

Funny, a friend loaned this to me last week because of our love for Wonderfalls and Pushing Daisies so I watched the pilot last night.
Pretty good but not great but will give it a few more episodes to see if I like it.
After going to IMDB after watching the pilot I was surprised that they did commission a movie.

I've never seen it, and now it's on my list for the 2008 TV challenge!!

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled

A year ago, I mentioned that I caught a couple of episodes on HDNet and loved them. I never ended up following through by buying the box set, but I watched the pilot last night after recording it the other day. It's listed as "part 1 of 2," but it seemed complete. HDNet doesn't have part 2 or any other episodes scheduled, unfortunately.

Anyway, I was blown away by the pilot. It hit all the right notes. No first episode shakiness at all. I downright love Ellen Muth. As I said before, she isn't beautiful and maybe wouldn't even be considered pretty, but she's got an appeal all her own. And, the last scene, when she's sitting in her sister's closet? She *is* beautiful, dammit.

I'm back to wanting the box, but I wonder if this is a show that will come out on Blu-Ray. I'd rather keep watching in HD if possible, but I gotta watch anyway.

Since I love what I've seen of this, and am a Pushing Daisies fan, I guess I should give Wonderfalls another shot. I didn't like the one episode I saw, but maybe I wasn't in the right Bryan Fuller mindset at the time. In fact, since I was playing Far Cry with it on in the background, I'm sure I wasn't. This was also the day a gorilla escaped from the Dallas Zoo and was shot to death, just to add a little color. It's actually cool that I remembered that, because it allows me to pinpoint the exact date and episode: March 19, 2004 -- Karma Chameleon.

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled

I dont have BluRay and am sure the picture is great, but I doubt this would ever come out on the format. The show is amazing and I wouldnt let that from stopping me to buy such a great show. Plus, I believe the two seasons can be found for 19.99 at Target, a little bit cheaper at Sams Club if you have a membership

I was never able to get into Pushing Daisies, but I really liked Wonderfalls. It has alot more in common with DLM than PD because it exists in actual reality instead of PD's fantasy hyperreality. DLM quickly became John Masius's vision, so Wonderfalls was Fuller's chance to explore the issues that Showtime never game him a chance to.

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled

Two years after discovering this on HDNet, I finally bought the set. It's kind of cool I waited, since I was able to get everything in one shot (similar to Carnivale, which I also became intrigued by two years ago and am now thinking of buying when it is $20 a set instead of $74). I've only seen one so far that I didn't see back then, but it's nice to be watching in order and getting the proper context for everything.

The show's just as good as I remembered it to be. One minute, it's sidesplittingly funny (the crazy deaths or the office), and the next it's deeply sad (George's grieving family). Sometimes, it's both at the same time, and sometimes I don't know which it's supposed to be. When George ran away from her mother and she said, "Yeah, skank! You better run!" my first instinct was to laugh, but then I realized it wasn't very funny at all.

Since I've only got 29 episodes plus the movie, I have to limit myself to one a day. It's tough. I want to finish one and jump right into the next. It's been a while since I've had a show that I can't wait to watch throughout the day, but this is one of them.

Plus, I'm craving some Peanut Poppies.

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled

I've watched four episodes of season two. If this is supposed to be a love it or hate it season, I'm in the former camp as right now. The last two have been particularly terrific. I'm not typically a laugh out loud kind of guy, but I was for "The Shallow End." The old guy showing up everywhere naked was enough, but also when George said something about, "Life isn't fair. You get killed by falling space junk and then you're accused of being a Nazi sympathizer," I totally lost it. Good dramatic moments in the episode, too. My biggest problem is that I'm getting closer to the end with every episode I watch.

I watched Season One edited in a marathon on SciFi, and then picked up Season Two on DVD, which I've had forever. Today I went into Target expecting to pick up The 40 Year Old Virgin for $4 and Gran Torino for $10; The 40 Year Old Virgin was M.I.A. and Gran Torino was price $10 higher than advertised. However, I did see that they'd rereleased both seasons of "Dead Like Me" in smaller packaging for $19 each. (Originally each disc got its own thin case). At that price, grabbing Season One was a no brainer, even though I probably won't get around to running through it again any time soon.

Sorry about that. I know there's little interest in my excitement over the series, but I sometimes feel compelled to post after watching a great episode. Plus, it gives me a record, like with my Stargate SG1 thread. For example, I'm really glad I posted in this thread when I first discovered the series, because I am able to know for sure that that was in April 2007.

If I hear anything about a third season, I'll bump the other thread I started instead of this one. If the Twitterer really is Ellen, she's only posted one other message since then, which was to say it will air on Showtime if it is revived.

It's cool they did that. I got the complete box that I think came out on the same day. It's got four or five thinpaks plus a regular Amray for the movie.

I know what you mean about buying things and not watching them. I bought the entire Alias boxed set when it became available, right after watching all five seasons through . . . other means. I have yet to play a single disc.

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled

I'm pleased whenever someone new finds the show. Enjoy it. For similar style, be sure to pick up the single season of Wonderfalls. They were two of my favorite shows.

I'd skip the final tv movie-- or wait a few months before watching it, as it is so disconnected from the series that it would be a bad way to end your marathon.

She has a MySpace page (a real one) that she updates once and awhile.

MySpace.com - Ellen - 28 - Female - Milford, Connecticut - www.myspace.com/ellenmuth3681

Last blog entry was February 28, 2009, in which she asked for people's reviews of the movie.

I wish we saw more of her. I've been assuming that she's either independently wealthy, or that the rumored health scare after the DLM series ended affected her in some way that made acting not a viable option. She was a voice-actor in an audio-play recently that I've thought about getting:
amazonia.html

It is kind of frustrating, not knowing why she hasn't acted since the series, but I guess we must respect her privacy. It is frustrating because if she is healthy, then I'd like to demand that she work more! But I can't really make that demand if she has a private reason why she doesn't work much.

At certain price points I'm just not sure I'll ever see a deal that good again. I've been on the fence about Everwood Season Two, but I'll probably wait a few months until a deal comes along.

Her family is apparently very well off, with a line that can be traced back to Edward I and the Mayflower. Her father is also an ophthalmologist. I'm sure she could lay around all day every day and not have to worry about finances.

I watched one of the episodes when it came out and didn't like it. As I said earlier in this thread, though, I was distracted at the time. Plus, I hadn't watched DLM and Pushing Daisies, so I probably wasn't ready for it. I'm planning to give it another try.

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled

It's more abrasive than DLM is; probably more what Bryan Fuller originally intended DLM to be. After a few episodes you start to get a window into why things are so abrasive. I watched it on Fox, never caught the unaired episodes on DVD, though.

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled

Did they kind of drop the idea that reapers look different to the living than they do to each other (and the audience) somewhere along the line? As far as I know, as of the sixth episode of the second season, we have never seen Daisy looking different. And, a woman described Rube, and her description sounded like the way we see Rube. We've only really seen George and Mason looking different, and I don't think we've seen Mason's other since the pilot. George has to still look different, since the Happy Time people knew George and know what Millie looks like (not to mention encounters with the Lass family), but I wonder if that aspect was intentionally toned down for new viewers. I know they've started to have the men of Happy Time crazy about Millie.

George was right when she said she looked like a crackwhore or something.

Then again, this photo came up during a Laura Boddington search. If this is really her :

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled

Yeah, one of the creative instructions from, I believe, MGM was to drop the idea that reapers look different to the living after death than they did while they were living. IIRC, there's nothing in Season Two the directly contradicts that concept -- it just isn't emphasized like it was during the first season. However, it was established at some point that you revert to your living appearance once the last person that could recognize you dies, which is why Rube is recognizable to the living. However, that does create its own problem later in season two:
Warning Spoiler! Click to show
because Rube's daughter is shown to still be alive, albeit not in a condition to expose Rube's secret.
The idea is resurrected (pardon the pun) in the series finale, which deals with an exception to the appearance thing. That's as much as I'm going to say about that.

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled

Did Fuller want to get away from Happy Time or was it someone else? There was a stretch during season 1 where George was no longer there and she made a return right towards the end of the season. I think it was a big mistake to get away from that environment, as those moments are always the best. Christine Willes is just plain great.

Of course, it could have just been a planned break to keep it fresh.

I've only got one more episode to go.  That's the third reason for me to cry.  The other two were:

when JD died and when old Rose called Rube "papa."

Fantastic show from top to bottom.  I guess the only comforts I have now are: a) rumors of a third season; b) the idea that there are probably plenty of other shows out there that I don't know about that are waiting for me to discover.  I liked what I saw of Carnivale and it's cheaper now.  Maybe I'll look to that, Wonderfalls and/or Joan of Arcadia.

Ellen Muth has been talking about it on her Twitter.  She says they are in talks with Showtime.  Insert bit about there being no proof that it's actually her.

Edit: But, at the myspace site linked above, she does ask for opinions about the movie and says, "your comments help if we're going to procede with either more films or seasons."  Hmmmm, I say.

Great final episode, even if it wasn't a "wrap everything up" affair.  I guess that would make for a clearer path to a third season, but I don't even know how one would work.  I doubt if they could get anyone else beyond Ellen, Callum and maybe Jasmine.  Masius has a show currently airing on TNT.  Story wise, Reggie would probably be in college by now and there would have to be some change in Joy's situation after five years.  It doesn't seem likely, but I'll tune in if they do it.

Warning Spoiler! Click to show
Loved seeing Reggie seeing George.  It's cool that we aren't sure if she saw her *as* George or if the effect had already worn off.
Well, I loved both seasons equally.  I'm going to watch the movie either tomorrow or over the weekend.  I haven't seen anyone who likes it, but I'll give it a try.  At any rate, it'll maybe show me where things are now and how a "third season"/new iteration of the show could be.
