Diet Update...

Well, for anyone who cares to know...

I've been on it for about two weeks. I started at 262, went down to 255, and if I did it correctly, I lost three inches in the waist line.

Not quite sure how to properly measure the stomach area...but I let the gut hang out both times, and if I did it right, I was 49 before, now I'm 46.

Three more weeks, the goal is 245-240 back to where I was a fwe years ago. I'm hoping to get a week or two down the Jersey Shore so I can get in some more biking exercises and walking. Where I am normally, it's too hilly and I can't go as far.. hopefully that might help speed things up...

Heh, and next week is the Los Angeles week trip. Doubt I'll be eating much then, since I can't cook my own meals, and Burger King and McDonalds has been off the diet for three weeks..

BK and MickeyD's both have salads on the menu

"Did you know that more people are murdered at 92 degrees Fahrenheit than any other temperature? I read an article once. Lower temperatures, people are easy-going, over 92 and it's too hot to move, but just 92, people get irritable."

Good on you, brother!

And go to the McD's and BK websites, pick out meals that are low fat, sodium, whatever. If you look around, you can get some good stuff there, like the chicken sandwich without mayo. Cut the portions in half, eschew the soda, and you should be ok.

good thing you stayin away from those fast food places. Those things will kill you, nothing but a bunch of greesed up sh't waiting for some fat guy to devour. But its not a good thing that you cant cook for yourself. Learn how to cook, or find a nice little lady that could do it for you

Thats's SO true. My two part-time vet assistants are both young ladies in college. They both have boyfriends, sometimes called fiances, that they live with. In both cases, the guys do the cooking; according to the girls, they don't know how.

Of course, they both said they didn't know how to use a vacuum cleaner or a washer & dryer when they started to work here, as well. What's in all those magazines they read, anyway? Ahhh, makeup, lingerie, and shoes....

DAMMIT I'm in the wrong profession. You need to relocate to CO, open a practice, an hire me part time, and all the ladies full time....

Unless I missed it, I didn't see which diet you were on neil. I did atkins about a year ago with great success, about 60 pounds. As with all the atkins people it's all back
Please advise, maybe I'll give it a stab.

Seconded supersize me. Apparently the McD's salads are worse than some of their burgers.

This would be a Doctor imposed diet using Medi Fast Milshakes. One at 12, one at 3, and one at 9. So far, I guess it seems to be working, heh.

I've been wondering something. Am I loosing weight at the right pace? I started at 263 October 1st... I'm now back down to 250. Is 13 pounds and 4 inches in the waist gone a good thing for one months worth of work, or should I have lost more?

Just curious, because by the time December rolls around I hope to be at my more normal weight of 240 again..but hope to go even lower than that this time around.

Way to go Neil, keep it going. If you can incorporate some exercise that is fun and rewarding, the easier it is to keep the weight that you got off, off for good.

yar, there certainly are alternatives to Mickey D's and BK in L.A. nevermind the suggestions of getting a salad from there either. you can get a salad anywhere, why make it harder on yourself by going into a place whos "food" you like so much? doesn't make much sense to me.

no one's going to be able to tell you if the rate of fat loss within the one month time period is about right or not since everyone's body is so different from everyone elses.

for those of you that have dieted before.... that's the trap. when you think you're dieting most people won't stick to it. you need to change your eating habits. there's a big difference.

also, regular exercise is a must to help lose weight/speed up metabolism/maintain. without it, you'll be back to square one shortly.

Neil, good luck with your newer you. it's nice to compare numbers, but nothing is more truer than your mirror.

keep it up.

That's about right. 1-2 pounds of fatloss per week is about the fastest rate you'll want to lose weight. Anything more is probably muscle (or water). You want to preserve your lean mass as much as possible.

Because you are just starting out, some of the initial weight loss was almost certainly water weight. Don't be discouraged if your weight loss slows somewhat. Aim for 1-2 pounds per week by creating a mild caloric deficit and be sure to exercise: weights, cardio, and a clean diet will get you to your goals before you know it!

Neil-

Men's Fitness magazine just released a Men's Nutrition Guide that you might want to check out. It discusses real nutrition (not just cutting out carbs, fat, or anything like that) and offers several simple programs for losing weight, gaining muscle, overall health, whatever your goals might be.

It's no magic bullet, but I've been reading it and it has a lot of good information in there. It also breaks down what the "not so bad" food choices are from major fast food and restaurant chains (for when you need to either eat quick or are travelling.) You might want to hit a Borders and check it out as some supplemental material.

Hey, speak for yourself there, Phillip It's been 22 months since I started Atkins, and I'm still down 60 lbs.

Best of luck, Neil.

I've lost about 30 lbs. in 4 months. I started going to the gym every other day, that really helps. I'm not on a special diet, but I don't eat crappy foods as much and I cut down on the beer. I still have a ways to go but it feels very good to go down in pant sizes and to be able to do 20 push-ups like nothing.

For anyone else on a diet, have you ever reached a point where you stopped losing pounds? For the past month, I've been stuck at 250. Just recently, I finally dropped to 248, but the diet is going slower than wished....

I'm only having two things a day now. One small portion of Ziti with Marinara for dinner, and a small snack of Cheerios for Lunch..

It seems like that might not be enough food to jump start your metabolism.

Ouch. Where do I start?

No wonder you're stalled. Your body thinks it's starving and it's holding on to its fat stores for dear life. The vast majority of any weight you happen to lose on a "diet" like that is going to be water or muscle.

It's great that you want to drop some pounds, but you need to spend some time educating yourself about the proper way to lose weight. For starters, you should be eating 5-6 meals per day, not two. At your weight you need to be eating a minimum of 2,500 - 3,000 calories per day. You also need to get away from processed foods like pasta and cheerios and start eating clean, wholesome food like chicken breasts, tuna, egg whites, oatmeal, salmon, shrimp, lean steak, brown rice, green veggies and whole grain breads.

Weight training and cardio are also critical.

Basically everything you are doing right now is counterproductive to proper weight loss. It's not your fault; unfortunately the common belief out there is that if you want to lose weight, you need to starve yourself. Not only is that myth completely untrue, it's unhealthy and it's counterproductive.

If you are serious about permanently losing fat and putting on muscle, feel free to check out my web site and my forums (or any of the other excellent fitness resources on the web or in book stores). Whatever you do, please don't continue as you are now. You're only setting yourself up for disapointment over the long haul.

You can also try a "raw diet". Basically, only fruits, vegetables, and nuts.(no grains, dairy, meat, or anything else) Very nutritious and you'll lose weight fast(just keep exercising), but its pretty extreme for most people. I've been on the diet for a few months and it feels great. At least half of it is juiced/blended; makes it go down much faster. I love carrot and beet juice.

I don't have any weight training equipment, unfortunatly. When we went to LA, however, the hotel room had an exercise room and I was trying out the various machines they had there. I didn't care for the excersize bikes much, but I did start a workout on the treadmill. 30 minutes in the morning, 30 after lunch, and 30 at dinner. We're thinking of b uying one at home to help out with exercize during the winter months..

As far as foods, I've started eating String Beans and Carrots if that counts. Every now and then I'll make either boiled or scrambled eggs, but not much. That's easy enough to start up.

All good reading. My only comment is to go the free weight route and not the machine way. YOu'll reap many benefits from using the weights that you don't get with machines. As an added plus, free weights are (seemingly) always open in the gym as everyone is busy doing the machines.

Another question... is brown rice good? Don't think I've heard of it before, although I'm familair with the white and yellow/chicken flavor variety

I'm gonna try a new schedule and see if that helps any. Up at 9. 30 minute walk at 10. Eggs at 12, Stringbeans or Carrots at 3, and Steak/Salad at 6.

Also, looking at that illustrated chart of free weights, I tried the Peck Deck and didn't last more than 1 minute at it :/.

brown rice is better that white rice, much less refined. Its not really the amount of carbs you have, its the type. refined carbs and sugar mess with your sugar levels and don't metabolize correctly - usually resulting in weight problems(the more refined, the faster it digest and is dumped into your bloodstream - bad). The best carbs are raw vegetables.

I don't have any comment on free weights vs machines; best advice is to do whatever you can - just do something =) Just remember that eating is a lifestyle - if you go back to eating processed and refined foods, you'll gain all the weight back. Kind of hard in the society we live in, since 90% of the food is just that =( Try not too focus too much on your weight - just on eating habits and exercise. If you eat right(no processed or refined foods) and exercise, you will lose weight.

Just a little update. Diet situation still hasn't changed. I'm still at 251. Mostly fluctuate to 255 throughout the day and be back at 251 during the morning.

But, I just got a new digital scale so I wouldn't have to guess what weight number it was at exactly. just tried the body fat reading.. Sadly, I'm at 40%.

For the past two weeks or so, I've been eating better stuff, egg whites, small portions of meat, and stringbeans/carrots. We're either going to get our neighbors treadmill, or buy one of our own to help out with the exercise. If/when we get one, the new schedule will be 30 minutes at 2.5mph in the morning, 30 in the afternoon, and 30 at night. It'll be interesting to see if that'll help any.

The goal of this diet is to loose at least 50 pounds, and to drop the fat to 22%.

How tall are you?>>

5'6" Here.

Now we've just bought a new treadmill. IF you beleive the calorie counter, I just burned 110 Calories in 20 minutes, and I really do feel tired compared to a regular walk around the block/s.

The new goal is ten pounds per month, and walk on the treadmill for at least 20-30 minutes, two or three times a day. Once before Lunch, and BEfore Dinner, and After Breakfast...

Hopefully this'll help...and if it dosn't, a little walking exercize never hurt .

I've been using the elliptical trainer in my apartment's basement...at a moderate pace (mid-50 RPMs, midlevel resistance) I tend to burn 500 calories or so if the calorie counter is to be believed I'm only doing it once a day and I want to step it up to maybe twice, with some light weightlifting thrown in for good measure (hey, I pay for the exercise room with the rent, so I might as well use it, right? )

I know that having only a little knowledge can be more dangerous than none at all, though I remember reading somewhere that if you're going to exercise in the morning, it's best to do it soon after waking up and before you eat anything. Something about burning stored fat as opposed to the food you just ate...though I suppose that whatever you ate later might just replenish your stores. Can anyone more knowledgable comment?

I did Atkins successfully and while I don't really follow it anymore, I still haven't put on any weight. At my heaviest I was 315 pounds (I'm 6'3"), and started a contest at work for money, and in 1 month I lost 28 pounds. Since the start of that contest, about a year and half ago, I dont think there's ever been a time where I've been more than a few pounds overweight, and now I'm currently at 210. I wish I had done more weight lifting instead of cardio as I'm sure I lost alot of muscle too, but you can put that on with work in the gym, and since beginning a weight lifting diet, I've gained 5 pounds, hopefully all muscle! Also, for clothes, I would wear a XXL comfortably, but am now down to an XL comfortably, and in some cases a L. My waist size, I wore size 42's with a little room, and am down to 33 or 34's with a little room to spare. I still have man boobs and a little bit of love handles, sucks that the very things you want to get rid of are the last to go!
