Mine arrived today and is going back. The case was all smashed so it won't close right and the discs were loose and scratched.

I don't have time enough to watch all these DVDs!

Wow, it's not been a good couple of days. First I found out that Boy Meets World did not contain the extras that I was expecting and now this. Two of my most anticipated releases of the year and they both have their disappointments, despite that though because of the shows themselves I will still pick up both sets most likely

I am glad I visit these forums. Loved ALF but I can't stand cuts and glitchy DVDs I'll pass thanks for the heads up guys. DVD quality sure has been going down hill lately or it seems like that. Several anime glitch discs this month, just got around to finding out about Northern Exposure season1, and now ALF too. This bites =\

I know people who want to write to Lion's Gate about this, but will never get around to it if they have to use "snail mail".

Is this the email address that one should write to about this: general-inquiries@lgecorp.com? (I found it on
Lion's Gate's site.) Or is there a better e-mail address to write to?

This is what I wrote to her.

ALF Season One Packaging sucks. The fine people at you're terrific company laid the discs out in such a way that there is a possibility for floaters.

And every single episode seems to be edited. As a consumer I demand a reissue with these problems fixed.

GET WITH IT, ANNE PARDUCCI!!!!!!

I was going to write Ms. Parducci, but I couldn't have addressed the issue better myself.

Not to be rude, but the tone of that e-mail to Ms. Parducci is a bit over the top and likely won't convey as much weight as one that is written in a non emotional manner free of vulgarities, personal attacks, and spelling errors.

By all means, I believe those who are upset by this release should make their displeasure known, but there are certain standards of communication that should be adhered to. Reasonable people can disagree on issues, but that doesn't shouldn't mean getting "down and dirty" with them.

Well, I'm very p. o'ed by this. I've been waiting for this set to come out ever since I read it on TVShowsonDVD..

Then when it comes out, it's edited, there's no commentary by Paul Fusco... for once he should un-disguise himself and maybe even reveal who he is. Or will he be dressed in his ALF suit at his own funeral?

And you're saying that a course of etiquette and protocol is more desirable? oooooooooookay!!!

Yes, always.

Ranting and raving emails are often easily dismissed or written off by the person receiving them, a well thought out and well written and polite email is going to be taken seriously. Not that you're particular email is this bad, but often those types of emails make the author of them look like a 13 year old who just got access to the computer and just learned a brand new swear word or 2. So, always always use consideration, it will get you taken seriously a lot easier. I mean how serious would you take a complaint like that?

Basically, on this matter Steve is right. Of course, voice concerns you might have over this release, but there is still a right and a wrong way to do it and a good way and a bad way for ones voice to be heard.

I might have been wrong. But I was... well, like most of us discussing this topic... HURT!

Then use those words:

"As a longtime fan looking forward to this set, I was very hurt and disappointed to discover that the episodes are the shortened, edited versions used for syndication. The packaging also seems very inadequate for protecting the discs and there have been many reports of scratched discs from those who've already bought the set. However, I will not be buying the set until these issues are resolved and recommend that LGE put a bit more emphasis on quality control and content verification in the future."

That was the gist of what I wrote in my letter. Sarcasm, insults, and poor spelling/grammar will not be effective, regardless of whether or not that reflects your real feelings on the matter.

The latest rumor is that Lion's Gate knew they were releasing the edited versions....because the syndication versions were already digitized and they were unwilling to put up the cash to do the same for the original uncut tapes.

If that's true, it makes it even worse.

Snail mail is always the best way to go with complaints. E-mail isn't half as effective. If you really care, take the two minutes and the 37 cents and write a note. All letters should be polite in tone, otherwise you are considered a crank and your letter will not be taken seriously.

I imagine that TVshowsonDVD is trying to get to the bottom of this, since they haven't made a post on their site about the matter yet.

Thankfully, I hadn't purchased the set yet, but I would have had I not read this thread. Thanks for saving me the money and the trouble.

I hope everyone here who did purchase the set will write or e-mail Lions Gate and politely complain about their false advertising.

How much money did Lion's Gate make in rentals for Fahrenheit 911, which they didn't even produce?

And how much would it cost to digitize 102 uncut half-hour shows?

The temptation to chew these people out verbally is strong and I'm doing all I can to resist.

As disappointed as I am in the set and the circumstances of its arrival, I will say that the content is pretty good. The menus are cool and interactve, and the episode listings each have a little area you click and Alf himself tells you what that episode was about.

I don't have time enough to watch all these DVDs!

Yeah, sam brings up a good point. Its a shame that a really good set is ruined by needlessly cut episodes, I mean if not for that fact this would be a really terrific set IMO, well that and the packaging.

The simple answer? Dont waste your time. Traditionaly, E-mail carries ZERO weight and substance with studios (and electonic petitions are even worse). Any bonehead with a computer and an opinion can send an e-mail. But it takes, time money and real effort to get off your ass and drop a letter in the mail.

Like I said a couple of posts ago - you want any hope to effect change, send a letter.

Thanks for saving me the cash, as I'll now pass on this set which I was very much looking forward to owning.

Buy a clue, Lion's Gate! >>

Guess I shouldn't be surprised. When we found out Lions Gate was doing the same thing with TMNT buy releasing Edited versions, we called the Studio and told them to change it. Luckilly, the writer of the series probably had more of an impact in that decision and stuck up for the fans.

As a big Alf fan, I was going to buy t his set. Now I'll just have to hope that TV Land will rerun uncut eps so I can transfer them to home made DVD.

You loose again Lions Gate!

not quite, since I'm pretty sure that everytime I come in to this thread, it adds one to the view count and I've been in here several times as have many other. Plus, that would also assume that everyone that viewed the thread...

A. Was going to buy the set anyway

and

B. Was now going to not buy this set.

So I really hope you don't really mean that you put that in your letter because its simply not true and doubtful they'd even buy it.

Being that this is but one of many Internet discussion forums dealing with this, and taking into consideration other people that may hear of this by other means, I'm sure they're losing more sales than that.

I know what you wrote is true, but I would honestly like to know why this is so. It's okay if you write a letter raving about how much you love their product; you're just one very happy customer. But as soon as you rave about the shortcomings of their product, you're suddenly dismissed as some kind of crackpot. Are corporations really that incapable of conceiving that their beloved little product might, in actuality, be worse than garbage? It seems the corporate bigwigs sincerely believe there are only two kinds of customers: the vast majority (of course) who are deliriously happy with the product and a select few who are mildly disappointed and would have liked one or two little improvements. Heaven forbid that anyone actually hates the product! Oh, no, no such customers like that. No siree!

Can you tell I'm an unhappy camper? And I hadn't even gotten around to purchasing the set yet. Between this, Fox's unnecessary removal of "previously on" segments, the editing of bloopers from Dark Shadows, the bug on the Rocky & Bullwinkle set, the new trend to cut seasons in half, and the entire Combat! fiasco, I'm seriously wondering if I should just stop buying TV on DVD altogether. If I wanted this many headaches, I could go back to watching network TV where I could be endlessly irritated by their on-screen bug and promo fests for absolutely free. Leave it to the corporations to kill a good thing.

P.S. I hope this post doesn't come off as too dark or angry, but I'm definitely not in the best of moods. It's been one of those weeks. One thing after another has gone wrong with no solutions in sight. And with tomorrow being friday the 13th, I really dread seeing how the week is going to finish out. Maybe things will look rosier a month from now.

They're cutting seasons in half? Why?
Kind of surprised that you haven't heard of this yet. As far a I know, Fox is the first studio to come up with the idea. They plan to split the second season of Lost in Space into two sets. According to their logic, they can make more money by selling two sets for $39.98 each versus one set for $79.98. Keep in mind, it costs them more money to produce two sets instead of one and the total selling price is two cents less. This is a recipe for increased profits? Kind of leaves you scratching your head, doesn't it?

My best guess is that they figure a partial sale is better than no sale. Suppose someone sees the complete season set in a store but only has $50 with them. Result is they walk out intending to purchase it later but perhaps never do. But with the season split in two, they probably buy one half intending to get the other half later. Even if they never purchase the other half, Fox at least got some of their money where they may have gotten none with a single set.

I personally don't like the practice. A season is a season, and I want it all in one package. But as soon as Fox announced their intention to start doing this, Image Entertainment jumped on the bandwagon and did the same with Combat!. I expect other companies will shortly follow suit.

Image's Combat! discs were announced and in production well before Fox announced that it was exploring the idea of splitting up Lost in Space S2. The Wiseguy DVDs, which first came out almost a year ago, have essentially been split into more-manageable and cheaper (although still relatively expensive) story arcs, rather than seasons. There are other split-season sets, such as Transformers and Sex and the City. All predate Fox's actions, and all but Sex and the City were done for the same reasons: concerns about a bigger set being priced too high.
