In the weeks to come, David Vincent would go back to how it all began...many times!"--Opening narration from the premiere episode of THE INVADERS (ABC-TV entitled "Beachhead" (10/01/1967) teleplay by George Eckstein from a submitted script by Anthony Wilson and directed by Joseph Sargent.

"Twenty-five years before THE X-FILES posited that aliens are already among us and up to no good. David Vincent began his lonely two-year quest to save the world. Alternately pursuer and pursued, openly unhappy about his role as a modern-day Paul Revere, and often pessimistic about his chances of success, Vincent proved a far more complex hero than 1960s television audiences were used to, and the perfect centerpiece of a SF series more downbeat and realistic than any that had preceded it. Using subterfuge to infiltrate human society, the aliens relied on humans' natural skepticism toward 'crackpots' like David Vincent to protect them from anyone who stumbled onto their existence and tried to blow the whistle on their invasion plan."--Stephen Bowie, SF Television Historian.

"It's an oft-repeated statement that KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER served as the inspiration for THE X-FILES, but Chris Carter's cult tv series owes a lot to Larry Cohen's 1967-68 series THE INVADERS. Carter should be thankful for THE INVADERS' mood, atmosphere, persistent paranoia, and not least, the alien conspiracies that abound in Earth's society without the knowledge of the general public. Although he's credited with creating the concept of the series, what's not so well known is that Cohen actually had no participation in the making of the series. Cohen left THE INVADERS in executive producer Quinn Martin's capable hands and departed, occupying himself with other projects. Martin's series focused on the life-changing events for architect David Vincent (actor Roy Thinnes), as he stumbled across the starkly cold and sober realization that extraterrestrial aliens were among us, and were preparing for an invasion of our planet. THE INVADERS lasted for two seasons and detailed the adventures of Vincent as he wandered throughout the United States, trying to penetrate the aliens' agenda on Earth. Frequently, he tried convincing important people that he's not crazy and that THE INVADERS are real and alive on the planet. Eventually, a group of 'believers' joined him in the crusade including a billionaire who helped on the financial side of things. But THE INVADERS went off the air, as many series do, without a resolution."--Frank Garcia, SF Television Historian.

"THE INVADERS was no kiddie SF outing like LOST IN SPACE. In fact, it was so unrelentingly serious, it made STAR TREK, which had a season's jump on THE INVADERS, look like CAPTAIN VIDEO. Where STAR TREK had fun amid its moralizing, THE INVADERS was a bleak, uncompromising examination of an obsessive hero trapped in a world-wide conspiracy. THE INVADERS was cancelled after two seasons. ABC-TV had a problem with it. It was too sophisticated for a SF show and too wild for the audience that enjoyed THE FUGITIVE."--Will Murray, Entertainment Media Writer and Interviewer, Author (DOC SAVAGE, THE SHADOW).

THE INVADERS! Did someone here mention THE INVADERS?

Ya! When are we going to see this superb, brilliant, exemplary, magnificent, fantastic, amazing and cool 1960s SF tv series masterpiece finally released on DVD?

Does making a request in this particular discussion forum really help any?

Anyhow you have my undying support.

Bring on THE INVADERS starring ROY THINNES!

"How does a nightmare end? Not here in the forgotten town of Kinney...perhaps in Bakersfield. Perhaps at some undiscovered beachhead in another state...or another continent. Perhaps for David Vincent it will never end!"--Closing narration from "Beachhead."

But the week to week stories, I remember almost nothing about, yet I watched the series quite faithfully every Tuesday evening.

So the eventual DVD release of these episodes will be a real treat.

If you're referring to the little picture under my name, yes, that's The Time Tunnel. It remains the series which fascinated me more than any other, and I'm thrilled that they finally released it all on DVD.

But back to THE INVADERS, the subject of this thread, I'm anxiously awaiting this season two set to complete this fine series too. Who knows? By the time THE INVADERS-SEASON TWO hits the shelves, maybe we'll be getting word on Season Four of VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA. I'm still hoping for THAT one next year as well.

REGION 4 SOLD OUT AGAIN!!!!!

THE INVADERS - THE SECOND SEASON 7-disc set (Region 4) has for the second time now once again completely sold out at one Australian-based online DVD outlet with the demand outdistancing the supply which is incredible!

THE INVADERS - THE SECOND SEASON 7-disc set (Click Here).

A Region 1 DVD release is now a certainty but hopefully all the (apparent) tremendous interest that has been aroused will one day (positively) translate into a vastly improved upon DVD release utlizing newly restored and digitally remastered 35mm source elements to optimum pristine condition.

That earlier message posting of mine certainly brings back memories and it intention was to really get this discussion thread going on an impressively strong start.

My only real disappointment was the inclusion of a time-compressed video transfer of the 52 minute version of "Beachhead" (10/01/1967) and it would please me no end that if there are no major special extras to be featured in the impending second season (1967-68) DVD release that a corrected copy utilizing a complete intact print taped at normal speed were included in the package to make up for this annoying gaffe.

Once a proper video transfer is completed then I would really appreciate it if Paramount would just totally grind up that abominable time-compressed copy into powder so that it never (unintentionally) resurfaces again.

Hopefully there is some one at Paramount Pictures-CBS Television Home Entertainment that has been keeping a eye on this discussion thread!

Re: The Invaders

I'm getting the feeling they're (CBS?Paramount) are either leaving it till the last minute, or there won't be any any extras in the Season 2 set of The Invaders. This thought also applies to Mannix's season 2 set.

THINGS ARE SMOOTHLY MOVING RIGHT ALONG!!!!!

The green toned packaging design was to be expected but it is still very reassuring to see that plans are positively moving ahead on this final season DVD release.

There will be some definite extras included but who knows perhaps Paramount Pictures-CBS Television Home Entertainment has a (possible) surprise in store.

There is a 55 minute version of THE INVADERS pilot episode "Beachhead" (10/01/1967) with a completely different effects shot of the UFO seen landing which would make an nice addition!

I still would like to see something done about that time-compressed video transfer of "Beachhead" which was my only real disappointment with the first season (1967) DVD set.

Actually even after the second season (1967-68) DVD release we are still not quite finished with THE INVADERS just yet as Paramount also has the 4 hour 1995 mini-series revival where Roy Thinnes makes a memorable albeit brief cameo appearance as David Vincent under its auspices.

Re: The Invaders

I'm looking forward to the S2 set, but aren't a lot of Invaders fans unhappy with the 1995 mini-series? I remember watching it when it premiered (not having seen the original series), not minding it, though the ending was a bit weak. I remember the Thinnes cameo, but I always found his recurring role of Jeremiah on The X-Files to be more of a proper tip of the hat to The Invaders.

If CBS/Paramount released the mini, I'd certainly revisit it!

Re: The Invaders

I thought the mini-series was okay. I wish Thinnes had been used a lot more in the film.

I'm really enjoying the second season of The Invaders these days. There is much to love about both seasons, and the second had IMO some gems. It's also fun seeing guest stars that have appeared in many other shows that I watch from approximately the same time period.

NOW THAT'S DEDICATION!!!!!

By the sound of things it seems very much like Scott went right ahead and purchased the Region 4 release of THE INVADERS - THE SECOND SEASON 7-disc!

I think I recall Scott asking advice on whether he should go ahead and do just that which obviously is what was done. This is interesting in that (I believe) Scott's introduction to THE INVADERS was via the Region 1 first season (1967) DVD release last May 27th, 2008.

Speaking for myself I preferred to wait for the (correct) Region 1 set due on on January 27th, 2009 with all the bonus extras therein.

Jeff,

Well, I do love my region-free player. It sure does make DVD life easier.

I've also watched many of the episodes of The Invaders on a couple of sites dedicated to the series. Unfortunately, one of them does not appear to be working any longer (the link hasn't worked for a few months). But the other one I use is filled with many clips, and a ton of related information on the show.

Re: The Invaders

I bought the first season of this show and enjoyed it a lot. However, I've read that the second season wasn't as good, due to the fact that adding other "believers" somewhat lessened the intensity of the series. Can anyone comment on this? If the second season is as good as the first, I'd sure like to get it. Thanks

Re: The Invaders

Well, consider that the other "believers" weren't added until sometime midway through the second season. It was done, I believe, to re-generate interest in the series, which started at a fever pitch and then tailed off as the "sameness" set in.

So there's at least a good half-season of shows in the same vein as the first season, and "The Believers" didn't really make the show any worse - the writing was still good, the guest stars were still top-notch - it was just a bit different with other folks on Vincent's side.

Back then, how many shows ever did? Lost in Space, Time Tunnel, even Gilligan's Island? Mostly, cancellation just came -- and we all moved on.

Today, in contrast, we are ALL expecting a conclusion to something like Lost. Just one way entertainment has changed.

Re: The Invaders

Back then it was extremely uncommon for any series to have any kind of ending. When they did one for THE FUGITIVE (am I allowed to mention that?), many felt that it ruined the prospect for the series in rerun syndication, since most of the audience would know the ultimate outcome.

That was probably one of the first series to have a definitive ending, and it was quite unusual. THE INVADERS series was just summarily cancelled and dismissed, like virtually all of the other series of its day - without an ending.

Most series did indeed close out without a definitive ending, but as I recall Route 66, preceeded the Fugitive and did have a series ending episode. I wonder if it was the first?

THE LIFE SEEKERS!!!!!

"For David Vincent and his new ally sadness for what they have lost and hope for what they may have gained. Already tens of thousands of miles away an alien saucer speeds through the void on a mission not of death...but of life!"--The closing epilogue narrative from THE INVADERS (ABC 1967-68) episode entitled "The Life Seekers" (05/03/1968) written by Laurence Heath and directed by Paul Wendkos.

"We were going to go on. We were on hiatus but there were writers hired; there were eight scripts in the works and then one day I read in VARIETY that the show and several other things Quinn Martin had on the air were cancelled. I think something political happened."--Roy Thinnes.

"I have read with interest that ABC has cancelled THE INVADERS an outstanding informative program. Has anyone checked the ABC program
directors for a pulse or heartbeat?"--Emory D. Guay, Concord, California (from TV GUIDE magazine dated April 06th-12th, 1968).

If you want an "ending" to THE INVADERS then I suggest that you watch THE INVADERS second season (1967-68) episode "The Life Seekers" last in the upcoming DVD set.

That will satisfactorily suffice as such. Try it and you should see just what I mean!
