Re: Hawaii Five-Oh oh

Ollie,

I'm worried because when I put the Disc 1 into my DVD-ROM drive, it played fine. I do not like to watch DVDs on my computer since I have a perfectly fine home theater.

I went back to the store today to exchange and they ran out of copies and they did not have any orders for more. Darn! So I had to get a refund.

So I went to Amazon and they're also sold out! Did CBS under-manufacture this title??? I placed the order with Amazon anyway.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

I think this DVD set is flying off shelves. I went to a local Best Buy today and when I got to the TV-DVD section, it was completely gone. I was lucky to find 1 of two remaining copies up front in the new releases section. Between this, the Amazon rankings, and all the positive reviews/press it's getting in the media, I would say it will be considered a big success by Paramount, and I would expect a Season 2 announcement within 3 months for hopefully an August or September release (which will be especially exciting considering the "missing" episode Bored She Hung Herself will presumably be featured in that set).

The episodes in this set look fantastic, in all their digitally-remastered and uncut glory. The only episode that appears to not have gotten the remastering treatment is "Six Kilos", which still looks better than it has in syndication. The packaging and menus also get high marks, some of the best I've ever seen among older shows on DVD. This set was clearly put together by a group of people at Paramount who have genuine love for the show.

In the meantime, I just finished viewing the Emme's Island Memories documentary, and it was wonderful that they were able to get so many of the cast and crew on camera recounting their memories of the show. It's especially touching knowing that so many of them have passed away since, and that their thoughts on the show will be preserved for all to enjoy for many years to come. I defy any true fan of the show not to get a lump in their throat when they get to the Jack Lord tribute in the show.

Picked up a copy today at my local Best Buy. The disc plays and looks great! I'm using an older Pioneer player.

Amazing to reach this point almost 4 years after I started this thread!

This is why Paramount is getting the majority of my TV-on-DVD money these days. Paramount is clearly "head and shoulders" better than any of the other major studios when it comes to classic/vintage TV-on-DVD. Consider what they have in the pipeline . . . more "Perry Mason," more "Wild Wild West," more "Rawhide," and "The Untouchables," among others.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

Well, i'm in the UK and thanks to DVD Pacific, I received my copy yesterday - only a few days after it was released stateside! Why is it that here in Britain not only do I have to wait another month for it to be released, but when it is, the cheapest I can find it is for £32 - eleven pounds more than it cost to have it imported from America! That aside, quality is superb, although as already mentioned, 'six kilos' doesn't look as good as some of the other episodes - although far better than the vhs copy I have...

I too was SHOCKED when I went on Amazon and saw that it ships in 6-11 days!! If it's not too late to cancel your order with amazon, www.deepdiscount.com not only has it in stock but for less than amazon. It's $31 and some change with free shipping.

Probably all down to exchange rates. The dollar is taking a thrashing against the pound. Pre-9/11, I was able to get an exchange rate of about 1:1.2 (dollars to pounds) with my credit card. Now, it's almost 1:2, so you Brits buying things priced in dollars are getting a tidy discount compared to people like me who are importing stuff from the UK...

UK and US price points probably haven't moved all that much, it's just that the dollars isn't worth nearly as much as what it was even just a few years ago.

Picked my copy up at BB last night. I went home & fired up the pilot episode. When I saw that "wave" and heard the music start, shivers went up my spine. It was GREAT!

So happy to have had this at waiting for me when I got home from work.

Everything I have looked at is so much better than what I remember Hallmark showing. The wave, the music, the action; just great. Reawakened the 10 year old in me.

Gonna be hard not to rush through them.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

Picked this up at Costco for only $29.97. This must be popular since the tray that held these only had two copies left. Given Paramount's committment to multiple seasons where sales warrant, it is a cinch that multiple seasons of this will be coming out.

Ollie,

I live in Hawaii (go figure...) and using the free shipping takes about 3-4 weeks via Media Mail. So boxed sets are out of the question from DD unless I don't mind waiting AND the price is really low.

I'll just stick to Amazon with their free and fast (First Class or Priority!) shipping for heavier items and hope to high heaven that Disc 1 works!

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

And if in fact, Paramount does release more seasons, I'd be curious to see what they do with the episode "Bored, She Hung Herself". It was pulled out of circulation in the early 70s, after someone was follish enough to copycat what was done in the episode. There appears to be no good prints of this one around, so I'll be real curious to see how Paramount handles this one.

I would guess they have the original workprint in a vault somewhere, which they can apply the digital remastering process to. It will be great to see this episode in a quality format other than the 16MM copies that were filmed onto VHS a while back. The downside is that the episode itself is very bad in terms of story and acting, one of the worst of the series in fact, excluding the 12th season shows.

I think you are referring to the end credits; in the first season they show the flashing police siren whizzing through the streets. All subsequent seasons showed the Hawaiians paddling away.

The opening credits changed a little in season 2, when "Danny Williams" became "Dan Williams" in the James MacArthur credit. Season 5 is where the new James MacArthur and Kam Fong shots began, Zulu left and Al Harrington was added. Season 7 featured the removal of Al Harrington halfway through the season. In Season 9 Duke was added. In Season 11, Kam Fong was removed, and in Season 12, the new supporting cast was added, with Sharon Farrell leaving mid-season or so.

"Anyone know what season they altered the opening credits and had the Hawaiians paddling away?"

After this first season, the blue flashing police siren was ditched from the end credits of the show. From season two to that of season twelve, Polynesians in an outrigger paddling through the surf formed the basis of the end title sequence. In fact, the only difference to the end titles came in the sixth season when Jack Lord's ego got the better of him, "Starring Jack Lord" now proceeded our Polynesian friends...

Oops...didn't know you weren't on the mainland. IN that case I agree. The few pennies saved in this case isn't worth the wait. I usually get my DDD sets in 4-5 days with media mail because I'm not that far away from them.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

Interesting explanation of why no additional interviews appeared on the DVD's, courtesy of a knowledgeable source (curator@jamesmacarthur.com) on the yahoogroups.com Five-0 forum:

"What happened was that both JM and Mrs. Freeman did, in fact, agree to provide audio commentary and/or on-camera interviews. This had even progressed to the point where dates and times had been arranged with JM and there was some conversation about whether he would do his stuff alone or whether some of it would be done in the same room with Mrs. Freeman. There was also talk of approaching others (like Kevin McCarthy). Then, suddenly, just two days before this was to commence, word came down from
Paramount that they had gotten their hands on the Emme program and had decided it was more cost-effective and time efficient to simply use something already in existence rather than spend the time/money/effort to make something new".

Hopefully Paramount will spend some money on fresh new extras for the season 2 release!

Sounds like The Bob Newhart Show, after Season One, they started to add newly done extras. It would be well worth the effort and if the sales figures are good as it appears to be, then let's hope it gets done for S2!

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

The latest word from Paramount (according to the same knowledgeable source I quoted in Post 172, curator@jamesmacarthur.com):

"A reliable source within Paramount has expressed high confidence that more seasons will be released, but the when is anybody's guess at this point. The only confirmed fact is that it is not on the release schedule for the next three to four months. The phrase 'they usually like to space these things out' was used."

Since Paramount went back in late 2005 and finished digitally remastering all of the unremastered episodes in seasons 1-6 for syndication (according to the paramounttv.com site), I am guessing they were intending to release the first 6 seasons if the first set proved successful (which it apparently has). It will be interesting to see if they go back and remaster all of the remaining episodes from the final 6 seasons, that would be a good tip-off that they intend to release all of the seasons. It's doubtful that remastering more episodes is going to prove lucrative for the syndication market, therefore I think it's fair to say they are doing this with an eye on recouping their costs from DVD sales.

Zulu was actually fired at the end of the 4th season, following his getting into an argument with the series' publicist.

Quote:
Was one of the original cast members of "Hawaii Five-O" and played Kono Kalakaua for four seasons until the bulky actor was fired after disagreements with the show's publicist. Supposedly a racial slur was used and Jack Lord had him fired. The rumor that he quit because the role was not big enough and did not take full advantage of his comedic talents seems absurd and highly unlikely. Zulu was replaced by Al Harrington, who was slightly smaller in size.

Was convicted of second-degree negligent homicide after his vehicle hit and killed a bicyclist in 1986. He was fined $500 and placed on one year's probation.

The last thing Zulu acted in that I'm aware of was an episode of Magnum, PI in 1982. In spite of Hawaii Five-O, his flat delivery didn't exactly help the man's career. He died just a few years ago.

Quote:
In Season 9 Duke was added.
If you mean to the opening credits, you're correct. However, Herman Wedemeyer made occasional appearances in the same role of Duke Lukela on the show starting in the 4th season. Originally Duke was an HPD officer. Wedemeyer played other roles (such an HPD police lieutenant) as early as 1968 when the show started. By the 8th season Duke was promoted and went to work on McGarrett's 5-O unit, and he was a regular, but his picture wasn't added to the opening theme credits (replacing a clip of an HFD firefighter welder) until the following year.

Quote:
In Season 11, Kam Fong was removed
In the 10th season finale, Det. Chin Ho Kelly was killed off. It was the most important episode to focus on Chin in years, and was the only Five-O cop to be murdered in this show.

Kam Fong's biography is one of the most interesting of any of the cast. From the IMDB:

Quote:
Was a Honolulu police officer from 1946-1962, when he retired and went into business as a real estate agent.

Campaigned as a candidate for the 1989 election as Hawaii governor.

Kam Fong's birth name was Kam Tong Chun, which meant "golden temple" in Chinese.

His first family died in 1944, after a B-24 bomber crashed onto his home.

Kam Fong was employed as boilermaker at Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii, when the Japanese attacked on December 7, 1941. He reported to work just after the attack and stayed there for three days. "I stood over the belly-up minelayer USS Ogalala, the only ship with a Hawaiian captain, and cried. I looked across the bay and saw the battleship USS Arizona burning and I cried," said Fong. He lived in Kalihi during WW II. On 8 June 1944, his first wife and two children were killed when two B-24 Liberators collided and the burning wreckage fell onto the homes of his neighborhood.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

I got Season 1 in the mail yesterday, and even though the first season is much rougher around the edges than even the 2nd season (particularly in terms of the music used) it is great seeing these again!

One of the earliest Hawaii Five-O episodes, and the last one produced by Joseph Gantman was "...And They Painted Daises on His Coffin". That was the story in which Danno is wrongly accused of murdering a young man (he shot him in self defense, but someone took the gun)...and that was just the opening teaser!

That episode was the first of two appearances by Gavin MacLeod in an animated performance as a slimy drug pusher called Big Chicken. He returns in "The Box", when McGarrett goes to jail to stop a prison riot.

I like "McGarrett" as much as the next guy, but I can't believe that is very likely to happen. How many actors have been on U.S. postage stamps? If they started to put more of them on stamps, how far down the list of top American actors would they have to go to get to Jack Lord? Let your voice be heard, but it seems like a waste of time to me.

The US mail wants people to buy stamps for collections - since it's money for services they won't be rendering.

I've been thinking that what really needs to be done is a series for TV crime fighters - Lord, James Arness, William Conrad, Raymond Burr, Robert Stack, Pat Weaver and Telly Savalas.
(EDIT: meant to type Dennis Weaver - McCloud)

They've had DC Superheroes this year. Coming up: Disney characters, Marvel Superheroes, James Stewart, Ella Fitzgerald and a tribute to Jury duty.

it does take 3 years from accepting a nomination to putting out a stamp.
