Not so fast there, Joe! JeffT really just needs to change the thread heading to "When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea Blu-Ray Release?!!!!!"

I rather like reading reviews, insights and trivia by VTTBOTS afficianados myself.

And yes, from your listing of S4 highlights I'm primed!

I hate to say this, however VTTBOTS was made at a time when Televisions Sets did not have the Picture Quality that we have today, and it shows! On the S1V1 Set the episode "Cradle of the Deep" featured a Hostile Creature that, using my 32-Inch LCD TV, was obviously made from Garbage Bags! (I don't mean to "Knock" the show, and I do look forward to purchasing the S4V1 Set later this month!)

This is more evident still, in S2's "The Monster from Outer Space" (Incidentally, this is a prime example of an anti-Rod Serling/Stirling Silliphant episode title if ever there was one). In living color the creature appeared to be one giant Glad Bag gone bad.

That's too funny. Im a little behind on my VTTBOTS DVD viewing. I just happen to watch "The Monster from Outer Space" last night. I wonder how Richard Basehart felt about having to act with a Glad bag.

That's part of the fun of these old shows that had to have SFX, looking at them now and trying to figure out if some of the effects (not all, VTTBOTS has some great effects) would look any better on a 25" fuzzy screen.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I probably posted this same picture much earlier in this thread, but as we're speaking about how these shows looked then vs. now, it's appropriate to post again. This is a shot from "The Mist Of Silence" from the first season. You can see the catwalk at the top of the tank in which they filmed the Seaview. I'm sure that in the days that this aired on TV, the overscanning round tubes never saw this framed this way:

Blu-Ray?

I may be second to none in my admiration for Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, but I’ll be thrilled enough to just complete the series in standard definition!

The SFX technology of the mid-sixties, as amazing as it was to us in the “Leave it to Beaver Days”, will have its every last trick exposed by Blu-Ray.

As it is, the unprecedented clarity of standard DVD reveals wires never seen even with cable, much less the wavy antenna reception that was once the norm.

Besides, during yesterday’s snow-day I watched “The Lost Bomb” (Season Three, Volume One) again and have to say that VOYAGE never looked better or sharper than it does here.

…And, to Harry, that’s one GREAT SHOT of Seaview in the tank that I think Irwin Allen would like to have back for a retake! I never noticed that one before!

I’m just happy to have started folks thinking about VOYAGE again, as we count down the four weeks to Season Four Volume One!

WILL ALL THE IRWIN ALLEN 1960s SF TV SERIES BE ISSUED IN BLU-RAY?!!!!!

One can always tell which tv series DVD sets are of genuine interest in the time it takes to watch them!

I went through all my current VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA collection in no real time at all which genuinely attests to just how much I personally enjoy this particular tv series.

Blu-ray would seem to be the next logical progression for the entire VOYAGE tv series making our current standard DVD sets quite obsolete.

Actually the same could be said for both THE TIME TUNNEL and LAND OF THE GIANTS as well.

I further can't help but feel that LOST IN SPACE will be once again resurrected in a similarly fully restored and digitally remastered collection some time in the (near) future. Not that I am really interested in seeing that discussion thread revived once again!

I love this series. When I got my blue ray player I put Voyage in and the clarity was astounding. I found Voyage was head to head in viewing with movies that I also played. I just hope Fox will announce soon when volume 2 is on the way.

Three Weeks To Go!

Now, it is THREE WEEKS until the release of VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA Season Four, Volume One.

And, to keep the momentum going in this thread, I’ll throw out a question that can be answered both “In General” and “Specific to Voyage”.

When you first get a new season set, do you watch them “In Order” or “Favorites First”.

My answer is BOTH… depending on the series.

In general, if it is a series that I’m not very familiar with, such as THE INVADERS (which I haven’t seen since its original ABC TV run), I will watch it strictly in order.

For a series like VOYAGE, with which I’m thoroughly familiar, I will watch favorites first – and then go back for the rest.

Specific to VOYAGE, I’ve started the various volumes with the following:

S1 V1: “The Fear Makers”, “The Sky is Falling”, “Long Live The King”, “Submarine Sunk Here”, “Eleven Days to Zero”.

S1 V2: “Doomsday”, “The Buccaneer” (there’s a CUT in that one!), “The Last Battle”, “The Enemies”, “The Condemned”.

S2 V1: “The Cyborg”, “The Machines Strike Back”, “Jonah and the Whale”, “The X Factor”, “Leviathan”.

S2 V2: “The Phantom Strikes”, “Graveyard of Fear”, “Killers of the Deep”, “The Mechanical Man”, “Shape of Doom”, “The Death Ship”, “Return of the Phantom”… even “The Monster’s Web” for guest star Peter Mark Richman and some great 1966-era SFX! (…Ya, think I liked this run?!)

S3 V1: “Deadly Waters”, “Day of Evil”, “Haunted Submarine”, “Thing from Inner Space”. “The Lost Bomb”.

S3 V2: “Death from the Past”, “Shadowman”, “The Fossil Men”, “The Wax Men”.

For Season Four Volume One, however, I will watch “Favorites First” AND “In Order”, as that season came strong out of the gate!

“Fires of Death” (with Victor Jory), “Deadly Dolls” (with Vincent Price), and “Cave of the Dead (with Warren Stevens) – then I’ll break order and skip to “A Time to Die” (with Henry Jones), and take the others in order.

What say the rest of you?

My answer is BOTH… depending on the series.

I'll also answer "both" as it varies with the series. Yes, I too am watching THE INVADERS in order since I'm not familiar enough with the stories to know which ones are favorites, so skipping around seems a pointless hit-and-miss exercise.

In the past, I've skipped around with the new VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA releases, knowing of some particularly good stories or guest stars, and I *might* do that with Season Four, although I'm less familiar with these episodes than the earlier ones.

I'm sure I saw some of these when they originally aired, and might have caught a few in syndication, but overall, from what I'm reading in my various books on the subject, a lot of the Season Four episode descriptions are unfamiliar to me. So I might just go in order on this one.

Newer shows that are more serialized, like the new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, we're watching in strict episode order as the DVDs come out. We've got the Season Four episodes of that series just started in our viewings, so that when the second part arrives on DVD in April, we'll be ready for the final episodes. Hopefully I can avoid any spoilers from the cable-watchers.

I watch my favorites on Voyage and like you guys the Invaders in order. I am done with the Invaders now. My buddies at Best Buy say again they will not carry Voyage season 4. The shelf had 3 to 4 copies of season 1 vol 1 and vol 2. I do not get it. I am glad I ordered from Amazon but I wanted them by the 31st. I also keep worrying why we haven't had a date for volume 2.

Look out for depth charges Guys

I’d be very surprised if my Best Buy (Long Island, NY) doesn’t stock Voyage Season Four, as all my six previous volumes came from there.

But, these days you never know. No matter, I’m getting it somewhere, somehow!

I’ll try to remember to report if my BB does stock it in three weeks.

Let’s just hope your guys are wrong, Mark!

I hope so Joe for your sake. I bought all mine thru BB and that is why I was surprised. They also are not carring the Robe and Quo Vadis. Peyton Place Volume 1 either but of course Battlestar Galactica which I will buy. I still might inquire Joe I hate for you to wait and no Voyage at BB. I just hope the Robe comes in time next week Deep Discout gave a good price on that and Quo Vadis in blu-ray. I guess I am to much a worry wart on that 2nd Vol of Voyage. Have good one pal and look out for enemy subs.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

In the past several weeks I've noticed that in the tv/dvd section fewer of the pre-1970s titles are being stocked. If I had to postulate, I would say that with an economy gone sour, BB is trying to maximize sales by catering to the under 40 crowd more--which has probably always been their primary demographic. With all the recent vintage releases that are scarcely present on the shelves it wouldn't surprise me at all if VTTBOTS S4 is a no-show at BB.

My thoughts on this issue are well known around here at this point so I want pontificate too much. Needless to say I'm with you all the way on that assessment, Michael. No doubt fans of vintage TV on DVD will feel the crunch worse than any other group of dvd buyers.

Yes, Gary… that was a memorable thread. I think we were both on the same side but not always realizing that… kinda like Nelson and Crane sometimes were! (Smiles)

I certainly hope this is not so, and I hope that Mark, Michael, you, and I have no difficulty getting Voyage S4 V1 at our local Best Buy, or wherever else we choose to get it.

I have lots of Reward Zone certificates tied up in BB, so they will remain my primary source for DVDs. And the reason they have piled up of late is that – other than THE INVADERS Season Two, there has been nothing I’ve wanted on DVD since early December’s release of LOST Season 4.

Yes, there are some interesting cartoon sets that I will want, as the months progress: Fleischer Superman, Warner’s Sat Am 1960s, Chuck Jones’ Tom and Jerry, and Freakazoid Season Two, but there’s not all that much “Vintage TV” out there that I still want. It’s been a “wildest dream come true” situation for me… especially if Voyage Season Four is completed!

BB didn’t advertise THE INVADERS Season Two (a set with a comparable demographic to Voyage – certainly if I read these threads correctly), but my store had it and at a decent discount off list. I’m still expecting the same for Voyage S4 V1.

But, I take Mark seriously when he warns otherwise. We’ll see…

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I was reading that best buy will be focusing on blu ray and will reduce their standard dvd inventory. As to picture clarity pertaining to Voyage I am impressed with it and wouldn't want to see it in high definition. I have seen Space 1999 in standard definition and in some of the Eagle shots the wires can be seen. Star Trek was remastered with new effects to eliminate the antiquated special effects which IMHO were superior to some of the cgi used in the Trek reboot.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

Do not throw me in the brig but that is exactly what they seem to be doing. I also was told to order from their web site and receive Voyage by store pick up.

I am in the same boat Joe about what next. I have a lot of them myself. I got a great deal on Pinocchio with a cup added for free. I have the Robe and Quo Vadis in Blu-ray coming out next Tuesaday. The Robe and Quo Vadis are also out on Dvd the new remastered copies.

Here is our test. I ordered the two movies thru Deep Discount because BB said on line only would they carry these great Movies. Check out the blue ray section next week. I saw a guy yesterday I swear he had 6 or 7 blue-rays in his hand to buy. I guess it is good to see someone spending. I actually got a call from my favorite pizza place asking why I have not ordered for awhile. They offered up something to get me back.

Sorry to digress I am glad this thread has been reactivated. I must go and check the Reactor Room. I want to make sure we will make it back to Santa Barbara by 03/31/09.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I watch episodes in order and usually the entire set as fast as I can. If I have more than one set, I'll watch one disc of each, unless I really get into a show. I've bought all of the Voyage sets from either Wal-mart or Amazon. Wal-mart is very inconsistent when it comes to carrying Classic TV DVDs, they've carried only about half of the Voyage releases so far. I'd rather buy it from the store so I can watch them right away, instead of waiting for them to be delivered.

Can't wait for the 31st.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I'm usually a run-out-on-release-day-to-buy-it kind of guy, but the number of store sources to do that have dried up drastically. Even old standby list-price Borders is getting rid of their media in large numbers.

Best Buy has been hit-or-miss lately, with more misses than hits, and there just aren't very many local record or video stores left. That leaves online ordering.

For VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA, S4V1, I've ordered from the big "A", as on the same day, THE FUGITIVE S2V2 is released. Between the two of them and free shipping, its a good deal, and they're usually pretty quick in getting things to me.

I think as time moves all dvds will be on line purchases except movies out the first year or to and popular now tv shows. Now when you buy a blu ray crazy as this seems you get a DVD for the computer but why not buy the blu ray disc while it is on sale. Use the DVD for your current machine.

I was told more then once that BB would not be carring Voyage. They invited me to order from their web site. The big A may have it to you by street date but they even have a clause if you buy the big upgrade for shiping. Well please read the clause if you have not done so.

Two Weeks To Go!

We continue to celebrate VOYAGE AWARENESS MONTH, and remind you all that there are only TWO WEEKS until the release of VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA Season Four Volume One.

This week’s “Thread Continuance Question” is: Which is the best Voyage DVD box cover, which is the worst, and where does the current one fit in?

BEST: Season Two Volume Two. Seaview and Flying Sub. For a cover that does not picture the actors, this is as perfect as it can be… even if that IS the First Season Seaview with FS1. Irwin Allen always DID like time travel tales, after all.

WORST: Season Three Volume One. The huge Voyage title and sonar logo sure makes a “big splash” (pardon!), but the tiny images floating around it are both unattractive and inappropriate – as they represent what would be Season Three Volume TWO! …And they get totally lost and overpowered by the logo.

Somehow, I would have felt this to be more acceptable for Season Three Volume Two, and wished FOX had used the far more attractive S3 V2 packaging for S3 V1 instead.

CURRENT: It’s “okay”, but not much more. It neither emphasizes Basehart and Hedison, as they are off to the side, nor does it represent Season Four in any way. It’s almost out of the school of the Gold Key VOYAGE comic book, where the Seaview doesn’t look quite right but we know what it’s supposed to be. Or maybe the old Voyage Lunch Box. I’d place it above Season Three Volume One, but below all the rest.

BOTTOM LINE: If (the hopefully upcoming) Season Four Volume TWO cover art features the Ghost of Blackbeard battling the Terrible Leprechaun, I’d STILL BUY IT!

But, I hope Voyage “sails off” on a better, more memorable cover illustration.

What say you all?

My favourite is by far Season 1, Vol. 1. Very classy. I agree with you about Season 3, Vol.1 being the worst for the same reasons. I like the season 4, Vol. 1 art a lot but I'm not sure where I'd rank it or the others yet. I love the "comic book/lunch box" style, even if it doesn't mesh well with the other boxes. I'm just glad we are close to completing the series

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I don't like the S4V1 cover, for the simple fact that it appears not to fit in with all the rest. First, because all the other artworks appeared to be either reworked photographs or "photo-real" drawn art, whereas the new one is drawn in a comic-book stylistic fashion. There's nothing wrong with that, per se, but it simply "jars" when viewed with all the others. Why not go thr whole hog and give us a red cover as well, just to make sure it really sticks out like a sore thumb?

But second, and worse, it appears as though the whole layout of the S4 covers has changed, like the design of the spine (and it looks like the packaging as well, presumeably as a cost saving exercise). The spine logo has changed, there's a "4" where the little cameo photo is on the bottom, which strikes me as being just a bizarre thing to do. Did some dweeb really sit down and say "hey, let's start numbering them from the last two, just so they look different for people collecting them!"?

First, I’ll agree with Ron that the S1 covers BOTH are great – and the same goes for the S2 covers. S1 emphasized actors and Sub. S2 emphasized Seaview and FS1.

S3V1 was “out there” (kinda like Season Three itself), and S3V2 (oddly even MORE “out there”) was nicely done.

But, Richard is right about the “4”… all the more so because it isn't’t even REALLY Season Four, just the first half of it. And "4A" and "4B" wouldn't look good at all! Another photo would have been much better – but, as I said before, I’ll take it!

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

This series is before my time. But when I saw a friend of mine who was selling off his DVD Collection had the first 3 sets I bought all 3 sets blind. I mean I just couldn't help myself... he gave me a wonderful deal I couldn't say no to.

I got...
- Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea: Season 1 Vol. 1
- Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea: Season 1 Vol. 2
- Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea: Season 2 Vol. 1

.... all for a total of $15.00 (I bought a bunch [10] of movies too... and it averaged out to about $5 per title).

I already watched the pilot episode... and I have to admit I am really impressed. It is much better then I was expecting it to be! I was told that this series goes to color at some point... but the episodes are not as good as the black and white episodes. Would you say this is true? and what season does the show go color?

I also bought Season 1 vol. 1 of The Fugitive this month... which also impressed me a lot. I am really starting to get into classic TV. I think the next classic series I want to check out is The Invaders... would you say that this is a good choice?

Pete, your S1V1 of VOYAGE also contains the pilot episode in a color version (it's on the last disc of the set). Irwin Allen filmed the show in color but ABC wanted it to air in black & white as they weren't yet committing to color broadcasts.

Season Two is where the show switched to color, and much of S1 "feel" is still present in a number of episodes that year. The latter half of season two onward is where many of the show's serious-episode fans get let down.

To be sure, there were fine episodes in all seasons, but most fans will agree that season three tended to be the worst in terms of the "monster-of-the-week" format.

From what we hear, there will be another iteration of the pilot episode in the S4V1 set.

If you're impressed with THE FUGITIVE and like VOYAGE, then THE INVADERS is a perfect marriage of the two series formats. You get the sci-fi elements of VOYAGE with the serious, tense drama aspects of THE FUGITIVE.

Pete, the first season of VTTBOTS was filmed in black and white, though the pilot was filmed in color (you get both versions). From season 2 through the remainder of the series, the show was filmed in color. While many fans prefer the black and white season 1 episodes (more Cold War drama, less monster of the week running amok in the Seaview), there are good episodes throughout the series. I think you'll enjoy the three sets that you've purchased to date.

If you are enjoying "The Fugitive," you'll probably also enjoy "The Invaders" which shares some of the same themes with "The Fugitive." "The Invaders" focuses on the drama, and while there are some decent mid-1960s special effects, the show really doesn't focus on it.
