BE ON THE SAFE SIDE!!!!!

It would appear that's about it Jack!

But check it out just the same. I got this information from someone else.

I hate to think that somehow the video transfers were confused and the wrong one was used while the intended alternate (or differently edited) version of the colour pilot now lies somewhere in the television catalogue library still waiting to see the light of day.

I (and a good many other people I'm sure) was really looking forward to this too with considerable interest!

On the positive side apparently there are a couple of the "In Colour" pre-teaser bumpers to be found somewhere in the 15 VOYAGE season four episodes however.

Good Idea Fox put Flippers into a case where they are prone to sit on top of each other and get scuffed and scratched.. also the set is gonna look so nice to the other box sets...in totally different cases. God I hate Fox...well ok I would take Big Valley vol 2 in the same box.

"Sealed Orders" and "A Time To Die" respectively.

I've gone through all the regular episodes in the set and I think what stands out in addition to the flaws of too many monsters by this point is the fact that for the most part, there's no liveliness of a good guest cast that would help make some episodes seem better than their scripts. Sure, even when you get one big name for an episode like a Vincent Price, he's still just all by himself.

It is the Season 2 opening which I know we've seen before. The only question I have is was Werner Klemeperer's dubbed voice used in the previously released version too? That's the only other detail variance I know of regarding these pilot copies.

I do have to admit that after going through the cheap budgets and sparse presence of a real crew aboard the Seaview beyond Nelson, Crane, Sharkey, Morton and Kowalski it's stunningly refreshing to go back to the beginning when the budget and production values were higher. I also have to admit its nice to hear the Paul Sawtell underscore that was replaced after S1.

It’s true that guest stars were unfortunately trimmed down to (most often) ONE per episode – BUT, I believe that this grouping of episodes had some outstanding performances.

SPOLIERS TO FOLLOW!!!!!!!!

Victor Jory in “Fires of Death” (especially his last few pitiful moments, hideously aged and no longer rational and obsessed with finding the Elixir Stones to the point of a horrible death).

Warren Stevens, in the best of his three Voyage appearances as Van Wyck, effortlessly transitions from “Navy Commander” to vengeful specter, totally confounding Nelson and causing him (and a few viewers) to doubt his sanity. (“Cave of the Dead”)

And the marvelously understated performance by Henry Jones as Mr. Pem in “A Time to Die”. Such subtlety, as Pem almost fearful of looking Nelson in the eye when they meet – focusing his attentions on random objects in Nelson’s office like a model ship.

Jones portrays Pem as a “social misfit” and an older “science nerd” long before that term is ever coined.

Yes, the reduced budgets of the final two seasons had their effect, but there were still a number of gems to be found.

VOYAGE DVD SUPERSALE!!!!!!

For the benefit of those who may have missed out AMAZON.COM (U.S.) currently has a super sale on the previously issued VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA six volume DVD sets covering the first three seasons now selling for just $15.49 (plus applicable sales tax).

Now is certainly the time to advantage of the opportunity to inexpensively complete one's VOYAGE collection.

Pertaining to restrictive budgets it always appeared that the third season (1967-68) of LOST IN SPACE was drastically reduced but I saw an itemized listing of the individual per episode budgets that (if correct) ranged from $155,700 to $173,118 which certainly isn't cheap (even by 1967 standards).

I have to conclude that it is the actual expenses (actors' salaries, production personnel salaries, guest performer salaries, colour film production, individual item expenditures) that had substantially escallated.

One has to wonder with all the problems encountered producing both VOYAGE and LOST IN SPACE during the 1967-68 tv season just how did Irwin Allen reasonably expect to continue on with THE TIME TUNNEL as well and still sustain quality (something that was unable to be done with either VOYAGE or LOST IN SPACE)?

You can only stretch recycled VOYAGE and LOST IN SPACE props in addition to stock film footage just so far before the viewing audience becomes tired of these tried-and-true tactics...which is precisely what happened in the final seasons of both VOYAGE and LOST IN SPACE!

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I finally got my set today and though I don't care for the new packaging that much, I'm just glad to have the first half of season 4 and that all of the discs are working fine. I usually have problems on disc 1, so I fast forwarded all of the discs to make sure they play without freezing. I really hate double sided discs and I don't like how Fox keeps cramming so many episodes on disc 1, while the others have 2 per side.. Disc 2 had some smudges but I was able to clean it. I really like the menu design on this set. Can't wait to start watching the episodes.

Got through the whole set without incident -- even seeing more details never seen in TV broadcasts. Beyond those I've mentioned in previous posts are:

"Time Lock": We know the time-traveling andriods have different colored body-pads -- one has purple and one has green. But there skull caps ALSO have a small flourish of the purple or green color.

"Fires of Death": The Golden Morton is wearing "golden gloves", instead of having his hands done over in gold makeup, as was his face.

"Deadly Amphibians": The amphibians are not one solid color, but have color gradations to their surface.

Previously I noted the different color details in the aliens from "Journey with Fear" -- and that you can actually READ MANY (but not all) WORDS from the periscope shaft when Nelson sees the Flying Dutchman in "Cave of the Dead".

On the negative side, does anyone else feel that "Deadly Amphibians" was mixed badly, sound-wise?

There's distortion and the sound effects are turned up much to high (or sound closer and more overpowering -- even warped -- if that's the right word?) than normal. It's not easy to watch with this bad audio.

But, the general picture quality is terrific!

I am still waiting!!! I have always got my DVDs on time when useing this company. The worst was for a few bucks more I could of got Voyage at my local Borders or Barnes Noble who at first said they would be on line only. Now of course both are sold out. Now I am stuck waiting.

I have done a great deal of on line orders with DD and many others.

Please if anyone has had this problem let me know. This is first for me and I suppose I will have to demand a reorder if it does not get here by the end of the week. I have just ordered Peyton Place chapter 1 and chapter 2 this show is very important to me like Voyage. Also when is volume 2 coming out I thought the sales looked very good for Volume 1. You would think Fox would tell us.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

A couple of factoids:

If you want to hear the full opening theme with NO voiceovers and no early fade, pop your DVDs into the "French" language option.

A while back in this thread, I provided a screen capture/wallpaper of the closing credit Seaview painting, reconstructed from various sections since the credits faded in and out and were on screen constantly. Season Four doesn't do that, so it's now possible to get that full screen picture in between the closing credit screens. Hit "Pause" on your DVD players, and if you're using your computer to play it, you should be able to capture the full screen image, unmarred by the actual credits.

If you want my version, try here: Screencaps :: VTTBOTS Credit Screen picture by HGN2001 - Photobucket
and expand it to 100%, then save it to your computer.

I've only watched the first 2 episodes so far, I noticed the gloves as well. I really liked The Deadly Dolls a lot, much more than Fires of Death. I'm really impressed with the picture quality for all of the Volumes released so far, especially for a series as old as this.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I got my set at Fry's for only $30.00 last
Wednesday.
I am enjoying it thus far...the first two episodes
are all I have seen so far.
"The Deadly Dolls" is just so unabashed in it's bizarre-ness,
it is great fun!
I thought that "Fires Of Death" looked so much better than
the lousy quality that you would see on the TV syndicated
prints(such a vast improvement), also expect the same
improvements in quality from "Journey With Fear" & "Time Lock"!
I am looking forward to seeing "Man Of Many Faces" & especially,
"Blow Up", because I love Richard Basehart's performance in this
one as he roasts everyone's butt on the Seaview....it's a real hoot!
I am not too crazy about the packaging on this set, though.
especially the way the discs sit dangerously close to one another,
it feels like playing the game "Operation", where you have to perform
surgery without making the buzzer go off(only, in this case, it is about not scratching or damaging the discs)!
I am thankful that this is finally been put on the market...
(now, somewhat nervously awaiting the announcement of S4, V2).

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I’m glad to see such support for “The Deadly Dolls” from Ron and David!

As I’ve said before it’s not great SF, and was never intended to be – but it’s great fun! It’s the kind of thing I can watch over and over again, and enjoy it every time.

The puppets and Basehart’s oddball performance voicing one, the new music score, Vincent Price… it was truly one of the highlights of the 4th Season!

In fact, the first few were strong out of the gate: “Fires of Death”, “The Deadly Dolls”, “Cave of the Dead”.

“Journey with Fear” was quite ambitious for a VOYAGE episode at this point in the run, lifting it above its monster/alien antagonists (even those suits were strangely “other-worldly” compared to other Allen Aliens).

“Sealed Orders”, though good, would have been better if not for the comparisons to the earlier “The Day the World Ended” and “Man of Many Faces” is a near-unanimous hit with fans.

I’ll also cast a strong vote for “A Time to Die” and the wonderful guest role by Henry Jones as “Mr. Pem”.

I’m very glad the series reached this point on DVD – and now hope for its completion!

DEADLY AMPHIBIANS!!!!!!

I have had Harry's superb VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA third season (1966-67) closing title credits graphic serving as wallpaper on my home computer for at least two years now I'm sure.

I was never really a fan of the aforementioned VOYAGE episode "Deadly Amphibians" (17/12/1967) but I previously had the opportunity to see a snippet taken from this segment newly restored and digitally remastered and the (end) result was positively outstanding. The picture and sound quality were truly exceptional. It was literally like watching an entirely different presentation altogether!

And Joe is quite correct in that the amphibian leader Proto's (Don Matheson) elaborate sea creature outfit had many varying colour highlights to it: metallic green with hues of gold, blue and red.

The issue of sound problems has been mentioned before with the second season (1965-66) VOYAGE episode "The Phantom Strikes" (16/01/1966) but on personally viewing the noticeably amplified background audibility of the outside churning waters heard in the observation nose of the SSRN Seaview was intentional and the way it was originally presented.

I will reserve my own judgement on the sound quality of "Deadly Amphibians" when I actually view this segment.

Originally in its ABC-TV primetime telecast I found the VOYAGE episode "Time Lock" (12/11/1967) to be a slow moving disappointment but over the years I have come to appreciate it much more. The letharic pacing actually contributes to the oppressively claustrophic atmosphere of Alpha's (John Crawford) confined base-of-operations...which was probably deliberate!

However not as successful are the two extras who portrayed the pair of silver-skinned robot androids (Gil Perkins and Roy Sickner) and both look much too old to be playing these assigned roles and somewhat detract from a full appreciation and credible acceptance on the part of the tv viewer.

The costumed group of extras who represent Alpha's appropriated collection of historical military figures all congregrated and displayed like wax museum figures in his secret chamber lair are more aestheically impressive and visually arresting.

Lennie Hayton's consistently subdued incidental music scoring makes for a refreshing change-of-pace from the by now over familiar themes.

Of course this segment does significantly mark the first inclusion of time travel into the VOYAGE storylines.

Pertaining to the packaging for the VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA - SEASON FOUR, VOLUME ONE 3-disc set I have no problems with it myself...just so long as the discs contained inside are safe from any damage!

Lastly, Werner Klemperer was present in the previously issued VOYAGE unaired colour pilot "Eleven Days to Zero" (14/09/1964) in some of the scenes of the evil shadow-enshrouded mastermind Dr. Gamma so that it sounds very much like the selfsame version has once again been provided all over again which was not necessary.

THE UNAIRED 'VOYAGE' PILOT!!!!!!

As I have previously mentioned there is yet another version of the unaired colour VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA pilot "Eleven Days to Zero" (14/09/1964) which has additional scenes with Theodore Marcuse seen as the diabolical mastermind Dr. Gamma and this may well be what was originally intended as a bonus extra for the just-released season four (1967-68) volume one DVD set but something went unitentionally awry on this.

Perhaps if we make enough static on this point the word may get back to 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment and this (possible) mistake will be rectified.

After all there is still one fourth season volume left to be released!

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I finished off all of the episodes today, still need to watch "Eleven Days To Zero" and the extras, and I really enjoyed all of the shows. Stand-outs are "Deadly Dolls", "Sealed Orders", "Man of Many Faces" and "Blow Up". This half of season 4 was an improvement over the second half of season 3 because the stories were more varied this time, Season 3, Vol. 2 suffered from too many similar monster stories too close together. When I was a kid, it was the Monster episodes that got me into this show, now that I'm older I prefer the the thriller/Spy ones more, but I will always have a soft spot for the Monsters.

Basehart really plays angry, mean characters really well, like he did in "Blow Up and his guest appearance on "Little House on the Prairie", he is such a great actor and gives the series a lot of weight and believability, the rest of the cast is top notch too. There were a few moments of unintentional laughs, It looked like the guys were fighting in green Jello in "Sealed Orders" and it looked like the Seaview hit the same rocks on the bottom of the Ocean in at least 3 episodes. Otherwise, I love everything about the series, from actors to set design, lighting, Special Effects, model work and so on. I miss shows like this, ones that are more fantastic in nature and have a strong sense of wonder and imagination. Too many newer shows are too dark and edgy and the characters come across as jerks for my tastes. I'm very glad to be able to re-watch these episodes on DVD as often as I like now

Well said, Ron! I couldn't agree more! A series like LOST nicely puts a "modern spin" on many of the concepts that were Irwin Allen's stock-in-trade, and I enjoy that series very much -- but VOYAGE and the other Allen series will always be first for me!

I also agree with your assessment of the beginning of S4, though they did slip back a little in the (hopefully soon) upcoming second half of S4.

I still wonder what direction a Fifth Season would have taken...

FIRES OF DEATH!!!!!

VOYAGE in its heyday brought a sense of wonder, adventure and excitement to television amidst all the tired sitcoms, westerns and cop shows being pretty much a reflection of its time when science was on the verge of great achievements and discoveries embodying a spirit that most anything was possible.

For VOYAGE's fourth season (1967-68) ABC-TV played what was likely considered to be the series' best cards immediately available at the beginning in its selection of "Fires of Death" (17/09/1967) and exploiting the Vincent Price star power of "The Deadly Dolls" (01/10/1967).

For sheer spectacle "Fires of Death" is an impressive (technical) achievement especially the senational new effects footage of the SSRN Seaview seen violently spinning around in an undersea turbulance caused by the nearby erupting volcano. This does (somewhat) give the show a fresh new look albeit overall "Fires of Death" is pretty much indistinguishable from the third season (1966-67) product and I am sure that many viewers honestly didn't realize that they were watching a new season of VOYAGE on its initial primetime telecast.

I can't help but feel that this storyline was originally intended as a second season THE TIME TUNNEL presentation but ultimately adapted for VOYAGE with the cancellation of the former.

Curiously "Fires of Death" has garnered the least appreciation and attention in this discussion thread albeit at the time it must have been highly regarded as it was chosen to open both the new season and the subsequent Summer reruns.

I lifted this bit of trivia from vttbots.com under the episode review for "Fires of Death":

"When Daily Variety reviewed this episode in 1967, they were frustrated that Voyage had managed to gain a fourth-year renewal, saying that it was only a matter of time before kids chose between Voyage and Lassie. However, they were astonished by the acting of Richard Basehart and Victor Jory, noting incredulously, 'they went at it as if they were bucking for an Emmy!'"

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

Generally, we hear about these releases four months in advance. This meant that when they were being regularly released, news of the next one would appear a couple of weeks after the current one. As you will have noticed, we heard about the March 2009 release back in November of 2008.

The exception to this was, as I recall, the October 2007 release, which wasn't announced until the previous August. I am guessing that one almost didn't get released at all!

Sadly, it seems that we're going to have to wait longer than four months between S4V1 and S4V2, we should have heard about a July release by now.

And there was I, having hopes that they'd restore the final volume to it's old June spot, leaving us only three months between them.

It seems Fox is determined to make this series one of the most frustrating in DVD history...

I think it unlikely it will be dropped, but with Fox you never know. However, if Amazon is anything to go by, this latest release has done rather better than the S3 ones. It is much higher in the sales rankings.

REMAINING 'VOYAGE' FOURTH SEASON HIGHLIGHTS!!!!!!

This is pretty much what distinguishes VOYAGE's third season (1966-67) from the fourth season (1967-68) in that in the former there really isn't the totally lame offering which is a complete waste-of-time on the part of the inveterate fan.

To my thinking VOYAGE's third season overall reflects the colourful excitement and energetic enthusiasm exhibited during the course of the 1966-67 television season on all three U.S. national networks in general which most probably stands as the best year in television history...something that the fourth season VOYAGE just doesn't.

Unfortunately I don't share the same humour (or fascination) towards some of these latter produced fourth season abortions.

But just what can one look forward to in the remaining 13 fourth season episodes:

"The Return of Blackbeard" (31/12/1967) a tongue-in-check escapade recommended primarily for the superb casting of Malachi Throne suitably cast as the legendary swashbuckling pirate,

"The Lobster Man" (21/01/1968) one would expect something considerably more worthy to best represent VOYAGE's 100th primetime telecast episode. Even here there is at least one good line in which the crustacean extraterrestrial makes reference to the origin of Man on Earth,

"Nightmare" (28/01/1968) a very nice "Captain Crane (David Hedison) is all alone aboard the Seaview" suspense thriller,

"The Abominable Snowman" (04/02/1968) a diverting SF variation on the abominable snowman legend. A well staged scene of the titled monster seen sitting high atop a stored missile rack to elude capture. Suspenseful moments of genuine terror as the "climate control creature" pretty much kept in the shadows goes on a relentless rampage savagely slaughtering hapless crew members, not to mention the concept of scientifically controlling the Earth's climate,

"Secret of the Deep" (11/02/1968) despite some of the inconsistencies in plot it is one of the better later adventures amply supported with the respectable presence of Mark Richman,

"Man-Beast" (18/02/1968) the show's last gasp of genuine glory beautifully enhanced with a great Leith Stevens score,

"Flaming Ice" (03/03/1968) an unusually different sort of extraterrestrial menace bouyed with a typically fine performance by Michael Pate,

"ATTACK!" (10/03/1968) some effective moments of Admiral Nelson (Richard Basehart) being subjected to intensified gravity force. Thoughtful analogy of then current U.S. political ideological divisiveness during the President Johnson-Vietnam War era in an otherwise subpar presentation. Substantially benefiting from the formidable presences of VOYAGE stock company guest performers Kevin Hagen and Skip Homeier,

"The Edge of Doom" (17/03/1968) a lesser inferior imitation of the earlier "Man of Many Faces" (29/10/1967) with some nice stock footage of Dr. Gamma's (Theodore Marcuse and Werner Klemperer) futuristic flying wing bomber aircraft taken from the unaired VOYAGE colour pilot "Eleven Days to Zero" (14/09/1964). The usual respectable Nelson-Crane conflict one has come to expect,

"The Death Clock" (24/03/1968) an interesting SF concept involving tinkering with the fourth dimension as a psychological weapon

and "No Way Back" (31/03/1968) with its terrific pre-main title teaser in addition to the potent combined presences of Henry Jones and Barry Atwater. We even get our final glimpse of Admiral Nelson's base-of-operations office at the Nelson Institute of Marine Research! Of course the parting show for this often exceptional 1960s SF tv series as the SSRN Seaview sails into television history!

It is way too early to expect a wrap with the VOYAGE season four, volume two DVD set as sales for the recently released VOYAGE season four, volume one have been just too good and it will be taken advantage of for as long as it continues. Surely by now there are enough episodes already made available to keep everyone satisfied for a while at least.

What I would really like to know is why was the exact same version of the unaired VOYAGE colour pilot "Eleven Days to Zero" included once again?! Was something else intended?

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I'm looking forward to the next Voyage DVD release too. I recall one called "Death Clock" that was pretty good (but I'm talking 30 year-old memories here).

I just finished watching the year 4 DVDs and have to say I was surprised by how good and energetic these episodes were. The only times I was tempted to use the fast -forward was during A Time To Die (terrible) and the slow-motion fight scenes in Sealed Orders. When I last saw Deadly Dolls on WGN-TV Chicago in the early 1980s, I thought it really demeaned Voyage. Living dolls traveling from the far corner of the universe to take over the Seaview? Get real. But it really works now, with great optical effects and action. It has a marvelous sense of humor, unusual for Voyage. It's a very fresh, youthful teleplay, and the unique menace (those dolls) are extremely well done. The Nelson puppet is a riot!

Even Time Lock had some great new footage of Seaview maneuvering past mountain peaks and the eerie shots of the beleaguered zombies, standing still but with darting eyes, is really odd.

Is it true that crewman Jackson in Sealed Orders was actually played by Richard Basehart's son, who was visiting from Italy? I think Jon Abbott mentions this in his Irwin Allen productions book.

And speaking of story ideas for year five, Frank Garcia interviewed 20 people associated with Voyage (Zale Parry, Jock Gaynor, Harve Bennett, Neile McQueen) for a Starlog magazine article last fall, "The Many Secrets of Voyage'" and it includes several ideas for a fifth year, including an "out of control" weather story where Nelson's brother Perry is killed by scientists, and a William Welch story where the crew is transformed into cartoon characters one by one. There's also a funny (real) story of Terry Becker bumping into Irwin Allen many years after Voyage - no, it didn't go well!

Oh my. If this is in any way true then I'm glad they ended the show when they did. Dolls were bad enough. Cartoon characters would have really been over the top.

Gary "sigh... thinking about the greatness that was Season 1 of this show" O.
