Does anyone here have this DVD player from Zenith. It claims to upconvert DVDs to 1080i and send this out over component video. I am wondering if anyone can tell me how they like the output of this and if it does a good job of upconverting the image.

Thanks for any info,
Cave

P.S. I have googled it already and have the specs from Zenith. None of the local stores are carrying these yet.

Reviews on LG DV7832 w/ DVI?

Anyone have any reviews on the LG DV7832, a DVD player that upconverts to 720p and 1080i through BOTH DVI and component connections?

Features:
1080i Video Output Capability
CDiª Video Processing Chip
Progressive Scan Output
Digital Audio Output DTS/Dolby Digital
MP3 Decoding
JPEG Viewer
Variable Speed Smooth Scan Forward/Reverse (2x/4x/16x/100x)
Zoom - 6-Step Moveable (1.5x up to 4x)
Aspect Ratios - 4:3/16:9/Panscan
Parental Control
Plays DVD-Video, CD-Audio, CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, WMA, Kodak CD, JPEG, VCD, SVCD, MP3

It has the Faroudja chip for upconversion. This unit has both coaxial and optical outs, S-video out and composite video out.

The manual describes that the DVI output is compliant with HDCP specifications. I understand from another forum that the manual refers to the connection as DVI-D.

Do you know any places in vancouver that carry it?

I'm dang interested in the player as well.

I have a 4:3 set, and it's native widescreen is not available to any source other than 1080i.

Nick,

Have you tried A&B Sound? I've checked with a local Visions and Sight and Sound....no luck. I have someone on the island checking A&B Sound....no word yet. Supposedly any LG dealer can order this in. There is a dealer locator at the LG Canada site.

If you do get one, let me know how the X1 works with it? Currently, I'm unsure if 720p and 1080i via component are worth it on the X1.

wildwestelectronics.net says they are available now and will let you order one. It's not on their website yet though. Someone at AVS Forum ordered one there the other day. Their email reply to me when I inquired about it said it was $199.95 including free shipping. It is apparently the same as the LG DV-7832 which has been out in Canada for a couple of months.

Yes... it's the exact same unit as the LG.

They are flying off the shelves at Wild West now -- the company's CEO did a post on that AVS thread basically saying "thanks... more are on the way!"

I'll try and check out the info on AVS...

But anyone know how the layer change is? No chroma bug?

If it's not worth waiting until the last minute to do, then it's not worth doing.

Zenith 318 + Infocus X1 - black bar issue fix!

From a poster on AVSforum:

Quote:
Re: 1" vs. 3+" black r/h side bar

I took some more time with this player to see if I could figure the problem out. I noticed the bar wasn't as wide as last night.

The bar was a little different width on every resync of the x1 - sometimes up to 4" but as small as 1 & 3/4. Switching sources would show this.

Playing with the x1 settings, the Tracking setting under the advanced menu completely removed the black bar - no repositioning of the horizontal needed!! I had to run the tracking setting up to 97.

AWESOME! I spent the next 1.5 hours calibrating, and this player rocks. Running through the test patterns, the player does crop about 2% of the right side of the image, but the x1 calibration has taken care of the problem nicely. Now I can switch to other sources and only need to select the saved setting for colors, etc

Just an FYI for you guys with the player.

Is this big black bar output a defect from the Zenith or is it a problem with the X1?

I would hypothesize that it is probably more of an issue with the X1.

The X1 occasionally loses synch with the unit on a white screen on the older firmware. A popular Samsung HD tuner + X1 had an issue with this. Infocus said the problem was an issue with the Samsung transmitting an out of spec signal for a digital device. Apparently a lot of products aren't quite up to standard for all-digital devices yet, but work fine on other analog type equipment.

Infocus came up with a firmware update that fixes the out-of-synch issue with the Samsung HD tuners (and coincidentally, by reports, the occasional out-of-synch problems that some other units also get with the X1).

I would guess it's not so much a design flaw as an issue from the combination of the two units.

I haven't gotten a call back from Expert yet saying they have the one in stock they promised me. I will post and comment when I get my hands on one.

Check out this review by Michael TLV (ISF calibrator):
LG DV7832 Review

I picked one up last night, played with it quickly post-Avia calibration. 1080i over component is truly very impressive.

Hey Nick, have you figured out how to dim the front display on the player, if there's even a way? This LG unit is replacing my older Toshiba SD5700 and on that player I was able to turn off the front display entirely.

Looking for LG-7832 DVD Player in Canada: Any Tips?

I've tried my local Leon's (Dartmouth, NS) and they had one unit on display and refused to sell it. I've tried Future Shop, Whacky's, Radio Shack...

Does anyone have any tips for the Halifax/Dartmouth area?

Or, even better a Canadian place that would sell it via mail-order?

Thanks,

What i did was went to LGcanada's website, used the dealer locator, then just called up each of the dealers asking if they sold it...

If Leon's had it on display, wouldn't they sell it too?
