ALIAS season 4 ongoing thread (merged)

24 this year looks like same-old same-old, but it has a veneer of plausibility and some real tension. Alias however seems to have actually gone downhill. Even "Get Smart" was a lot funnier.

BTW Is Jennifer Garner any relation to the actor James Garner?

The serial type plots will be gone now as they try and salvage another season past this one by placating the "suits".

Like I said before, only these early episodes are supposed to be stand-alones. And besides there will still be character storylines going on like Sydney/Jack, etc. that we already saw in the premiere.

And don't forget guys, season 1's episodes were stand-alone too. Rambaldi hadn't taken over the show yet so each episode's story had some sort of closure at the end, the cliffhangers were usually about a mission that wasn't introduced until the last 10 minutes of the episode.

A little late to this thread so I apologize. I have never watched Alias on TV; only on dvd but want to start and watch each one this season. However, I simply forgot to record it back on the 5th! So I missed the 2 hour premiere dangit.

Any kind soul who may have this on tivo and would consider taping this for me I would be most appreciative. Will pay for tape, shipping & throw in whatever else to get this! :b

I loved Season 1 & 2 and loved some of Season 3 and just had a brain fart the other night when I forgot to tape.

I really hope they start adding a good number of new people to the show. I really liked what they did to 24 since I don't know what all the new people are going to do. You basicly know what everyone in alias is all about, I hope they add some new people where I won't know if they are good or bad, stupid or smart,...

Yes. Thats one of my few problems with the premiere, they should give Sydney some neighbors that she can hide her spy secerts from and we can wonder if they're bad guys undercover.

Looking forward to tonight, even though I wasn't all that impressed with the season 4 opener.

Something I have been feeling a bit lately about the show is less excitement about season 4 being here. After I finished season 3 on dvd (which is how I watched all the previous seasons), the wait in between I guess has made me lose some of the excitement of the show.

Right after season 3 finished up, I couldn't wait for season 4 to get here. I needed my Alias fix, but the last week (especially since the new season aired) I seem to have run out of steam.

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy the show and I want to keep watching, but I wonder if it's because of how I watched the show ( on dvd without having to wait a week for a new episode) or is it just me? Does anyone else feel this way or has anyone felt this way about a show?

Blame that on Lost, which was the show that went over by 3-4 minutes.

Overall, not a bad episode, it dealt with the whole "My name is Nadia, you killed my mother, prepare to die" subplot for the time being, with Jack being sneaky Jack, with the help of Sloane's approval. That question-n-answer session between Jack and Nadia felt like the scene from Blade Runner.

Weiss finally get let in on the whole APO deal (though it was highly convenient for him to be the one that got captured). So the gang all back together, including Weiss, I guess.

How fast can APO get from the US to Spain and still be there in time for Nadia to get her revenge? She's one lethal momma, and yet amazingly disarming when she wants to be (flirting with birthday boy earlier in the episode).

Marshall's presence livens up what could be a rather droll show at times. His telling Vaughn to shut up was great.

Although there was nothing new or earthshaking, I enjoyed this episode more than last week's two-hour premiere. The pacing was much improved and the opening sequence in the bank was engaging and fun.

So far though, this season lacks the emotional intensity of past years. I understand that the producers are trying to reach out to new viewers and all, but how about an interesting sub-plot or two? Millions of viewers have no trouble following the goings-on in Lost each week, and that is a program with close to 20 main characters and backstories galore. Since Alias now has the benefit of a Lost lead-in, it seems like the perfect time for the show to return its more complex first season roots. The flash of the current "Mission Impossible" story approach may encourage audience sampling in the short term, but over the long haul I fear it may well seal the fate of Alias. IMO, Alias is at its best is when the assignments serve as a backdrop for the drama that is Sydney's daily existence. Now, we seem to have 40 minutes of caper and 3 minutes of backstory and character development. How about putting a little meat on the bone, J.J.?

Hmm. Martin Bishop was Robert Redford's character in the movie Sneakers, where he had a device that would decrypt American codes (ha!) that was sought by the NSA.

Did anybody notice that the "we are everybody" song from Lost was playing in the background at Syds party?

I agree 100%. Quite frankly, without the macro story the missions aren't really that interesting, certainly not enough to make me want to watch every weeek. It's the characters and the larger story that make Alias interesting and must see tv.

And is it just me or does Alias have the most frequent commercial breaks of any show? It seems like you can't go five minutes without a commercial break.

The commercials did seem frequent last night but the show runs about 42 or 43 minutes like most others.

I think it appears to have long commercial breaks because they tend to go almost 15 minutes before the 1st one.

I enjoyed last nights episode. Waaaay better than the first 2 hr show. When they showed previews for next weeks episode I started laughing (evily), hoping that Vaughn would get his eyes ripped out! *sorry I don't like Vaughn*

Anyway, last night was fun. Marshall was awesome as was Weiss!

It's not he length that bothers me, I know the show is only about 42 minutes, it's the frequency of the breaks. I would prefer longer less frequent breaks. Currently you get back from a commercial and just as you are getting back into it, there's another break.

There was some talk at the beginning of this season that ABC has switched from the traditional four acts to five, giving you that extra break. I agree that they're too often.

Hmm...I guess I don't have much to say about the ep. As others, I'm hoping we'll be getting into a story arc soon. It was nice to see Weiss and Nadia hitting it off.

I enjoyed the episode and am interested in the new direction of the show. It's certainly more interesting than the mess that was season 3. If they get more into Sydney's personal life, and start to develop the characters more, the show could prove to have some life left.

Ratings were pretty high for the 2 hour premiere (kept most of the lead in from LOST), and Wednesday's episode held up mostly the same numbers. I have a feeling the show is getting back on track in two departments.

I enjoyed tonight's episode. It was nice to see more focus on Vaughn and the aftermath of the whole Lauren/marriage thing.

I was also surprised that Jeff Bell was the writer of a good episode of any show. He used to write for The X-Files and (in my opinion) his episodes were almost all terrible. But I'm happy to say though that he seems to have turned it around on Alias.

Actually, he turned it around on Angel; he was the showrunner for the last two seasons and although the fourth started out bumpy (I believe he was a last minute replacement for David Simkins), he got things working pretty well by the end of that season and did pretty good with the fifth.

Nice to see Kelly MacDonald from Trainspotting, Gosford Park and the recent Finding Neverland get some exposure. I find the hardness of her accent incredibly endearing. She's not too bad on the eyes either

Also nice to see a tribute to Kurt Vonnegut Jr.'s "Cat's Cradle" with the use of "Ice-5" (Ice-9 in his novel).

I noticed that too. Had to rewind to confirm, but it must be one of those "magic" pictures

Six worlds prayed to her, they built her temples, conquered planets, and yet one day she still rode off and destroyed all six worlds. And when the last warrior was dying he said "We gave you everything, why did you destroy us?" and she looked down upon him and she whispered, "Because I can".

Was Marshall hitting on Nadia? Is he married to Carrie? I remember that whole internet marriage thing, but he had no photos of Carrie at his office, just his son.

Nice to see Vaughn finally getting some ZZZZ's.

The flipped picture was very noticeable. Doesn't someone do any quality reviews? Episode was okay. The sceen in the market was a deja vu from the first seasons. Does anyone think they will discuss Sydney's disappearence again? I haven't heard it mentioned all season.
