Sorry but I can't help liking this movie. How bad is the Transfer of the current DVD? Outland bad?

Any hope of a reissue? I'm sure its up there on Warner's priority list

Transfer still holds up after all these years. Definitely a worthwhile purchase.

And the line about "the Schwarzenegger Presidential Library" now has an extra kick to it.

Judge Dredd is a different issue. The disc isn't anamorphic. OTOH, how likely is it that we'll ever see a new version?

Another vote for Demolition Man. Its certainly worth its bargain bin price. If memory serves me correctly, it even has a commentary by the director.

It's funny thing with "Demolition Man" A lot of people seem to hate this movie. It is cheesy much of the time. But it seems that more and more, D.M.s vision of the future is coming true moreso than other films that take place in the future.

For example, weeding out "Societies Evils" we see this going on today with smoking band and movements to supress ownership of firearms. Could Red meat, caffiene, salt be too far behind?

Schwartzenegger becoming Governor of CA. Blurbs of changing the constitiution so he can run for President (even Ted Kennedy recently said he would support that)

Excessive corporate mergers to the point where few companies own everything.

Effectiveness of Police hindered because of P.C. pressure.

It seems in hindsight. D.M. is getting some of this stuff right. And it's funny how ridiculous it seemed back when the film was first released.

Could someone just confirm whether Demolition Man Region 1 is anamorphic or not? I thought it wasn't hence I have held off buying it.

Amazon says it is - other places its listed as letterbox.

I had the same question.

Thanks for all the feedback...

Yep, it's definitely anamorphic and looks great (even by "today's standards"). Warner was, overall, doing some excellent transfers even as far back as 1997. Sure, they could probably improve it if they remastered/reissued it but I'm hard-pressed to find any faults with the disc we have now. Go and buy it.

At the rate things are going with the FCC, pretty soon we'll be fined for swearing just like in the movie.

Michael.. I just saw a two pack the other day with judge dredd in it, picked it up for the heck of it to look at the back and it said it was anamorphic. I have no idea if the original one said it on the packaging and wasn't or if this was a quiet re-issue. I would have gotten it if I had the money. I'll check again as soon as I can, hopefully it will still be there.

Demolition Man is one of the best sci-fi actioners I've seen in years. The action's good, but - as WillG has noted - the movie feels quite prophetic in light of the ultra-PC nature that pervades our societies today. Mix in some genuinely funny moments (anything with the 'Three Sea Shells'!) and the result is a cracking film. And how the hell did they get Nigel Hawthorne? As for the DVD, the UK version sucks! The commentary is gone, the film is slightly cut and the transfer is terrible. The R1 looks a lot better, although it's still not exactly top drawer. The commentary is worth a listen though.

how depressing that would be if that were actually the case. thankfully i think dvd transfers (excluding disney) have come a long, long way since 97.

Well, given there are rumours about a new movie (or pair of movies) who knows - CBR News recently talked with Silvio Astarita, one of the producers of a new Judge Dredd film currently in pre-production with I Am The Law Productions and Framework in association with Rebellion/2000 AD. - there is always tie-in potential, but do they necessarily want that?

I don't think you can really say that Demolition Man is prophetic. The writers saw obvious trends that already existed during the time of the writing of the film, and they exaggerated them for the "future." That's not prophetic, that is just... well I don't know it is called, but it isn't prophetic.

The reason this film is so good is because one of the writers was one of the writers of Heathers, I think. And Sandra Bullock shines.

Excellent film. Good commentary track. I have to include my obligatory snipe at Wesley Snipes though: Snipe bites! Ok, done.

I was reading reviews on Amazon about Demolition Man, and some people on there are claiming that their copy has the words "Taco Bell" replaced with "Pizza Hut" and some other changes, like Joel Silver being dropped from the commentary. I rented the disc from Netflix, and it is not like that (and is a nice anamorphic transfer, BTW) but I'm wondering if a purchased copy would have that change. I want the original version.

Don't know about the Joel Silver stuff, but the "Taco Bell" has been replaced with "Pizza Hut" at least in the european version. The reason being europeans not knowing what Taco Bell is.

Have to recheck my copy, but I'm pretty sure it had "Pizza Hut" instead of "Taco Bell" in dialogue and logos. My dvd is the Finnish R2.

The R1 and R2 UK has Taco Bell. The rest of R2 land has Pizza Hut. All R2 versions looks beyond crap (since all of them have 3 5.1 tracks), while the R1 version look pretty decent. Interesting note though, I saw this film on TV yesterday which was broadcasted digitally in anamorphic widescreen PAL (wrong aspect ratio though, 1.78:1) and it looked amazing! 10 times better than the R1 edition (aside from the wrong AR). Warner Bros. has obviously created a new master for this film. It's time to release this master on DVD.

The director remarks in the commentary track that he wanted to avoid grain in the picture, but there's a lot on the DVD. The TV broadcast I saw was grain free.

Sandra Bullock licks ass in this movie!

Hmm, I will have to watch Demolition Man on my front projector to really see how the transfer holds up...I've had the DVD since the day it was released. Time for a revisit.

A new master Magnus? Oh man. Hmm, anyone know if it was broadcast in HD yet?
Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him...a super-callused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

Gamesh...

Am I to assume you watch on a large screen? My R2 version looks fine. Comparable to most WB DVD's of the same age.
