AC/DC: Back in Black Dual Disc

I wouldn't consider this release Hi-res as the DVD side is only 16/48 PCM.

Dome: Do you mind commenting on the BiB DVD side's contents? Is there anything substantive on there? Trying to decide if I wanna double dip on this title. -p

Please do comment, I would also like to know. Is there much difference between the CD side (which I assume is the same as the remastered CD they put out a year or two ago (and which I own)) and the PCM 16bit/48KHz DVD side?

That's one of my favorite CDs. I didn't even know an SACD was available. Does it contain a surround mix?

It's supposed to, according to SA-CD.net. It's in the mail, so I'm eagerly awaiting it. It was highly recommended to me by my jazz musician friend.

It sounds slightly better, and I only double-dipped because I love AC/DC. I kind of wished it was 5.1 like the other DVD album I have (Fleetwood Mac Rumours).

I'll do a more comprehensive comparison later.

I have the Harnancourt Mozart Requium

Ditto for Rubenstein's Chopin Ballads

How's the Boston Baroque? I have their Bach Orchestral Suites--also a great disc.

Thx for the Mozart "Requiem" tip, Allen. Do you concur with PaulDA's 'two thumbs up'?

Btw, does anyone have this Sony SACD Ultimate Collection?

How's the Boston Baroque?

I really like the period instrument sound (our church choir director brings in a period instrument orchestra to accompany our "bigger stuff" that we do at least once or twice a year, so I've gotten spoiled/used to it ).
I don't think you can go wrong w/ baroque on the Telarc label, as far as recording quality and SACD - assuming you like period instruments and/or classical music, of course.

Thx for the Mozart "Requiem" tip, Allen. Do you concur with PaulDA's 'two thumbs up'?

I have it on again right now.
If you like Mozart's choral works, this is very, very good stuff - it's "big" and rich - chorus with brass/string accompaniment, mostly - it "feels" like a live performance in a good-sized cathedral. But then, I've not been disappointed with ANY of the SACDs I've bought so far - maybe b/c I've only bought what I've found recommended at several different forums and review sites (and thus far I'm not duplicating what I already have on redbook, so no true A/B comparisons are being done).

Got rid of my SONY 555ES and bought a Denon 2900 so I could start enjoying DVD-Audio. Both formats sound about the same. SACD just a notch better. Just bought The Eagles--Hotel California,Fleetwood Mac--Rumours,Linda Ronstat--What's New?,Grover Washington Jr--Winelight and The Doors-LA Woman. All Sound crisp and clear. My SACD's sound about 20% better on my Denon. I've been collecting SACD's for the last 4 years, and have a nice library. Two of the best sounding "POP" re-issues from the 70's are in the SACD format. Captain Fantastic by Elton John and The Carpenters Singles. I keep listing to them over and over again--I hope these will not be considered swan song issues of the format.

Danny - where did you get Brothers In Arms?

Not on Amazon.com or .ca, .co.uk has it listed releasing on the 9th May. Did you pre-order or is it available in North America early somewhere?

Oops - nevermind - just read your other post. Pre-order from .co.uk it is

Hi, Gabriela. No disrespect, but enough already with this sentiment. At least qualify such remarks by genre.

There's been no formal statement either way about those early Sony single-layer SACDs going OOP. And just because those releases may have been ill-advised (as opposed to hybrids) does not mean diddly to a variety of other engineers and artists excited about and currently working on projects in DSD for SACD release. Until we know whether Blu-ray will support DSD, I think the tales of SACD's demise are exaggerated.

Check this out this piece, "SACD Is Dying . . . Or Not?" please:

I'd read it before. But single layered Sony SACD's, Sonystyle stopped selling SACD, BestBuy is doing away with SACD & DVD-A in stores (at least in Yuma AZ, Chula Vista CA, and Mission Valley CA, that I've seen) made me say what I said about the format (or formats if you add dvd-a). Maybe as an audiophile format it will stay (jazz, blues, classics, whatever), but for mainstream titles it looks dull. Correct me otherwise. By the way, We hear our SACD's in stereo, can't quite get used to the 5.1 (Rage Hard FGTH, Innocent Man, Jamie Cullum SACD's) or 4.1 (Feeling's Back Chuck Mangione SACD). I have my denon in 2 ch sacd with the sub on option. This is what sounds best for me. As for DVD-A, no complaints there, like all my 50+ titles.

Sony's online (SACD) presence has always been a disorganized disaster IMO.

And rarely do I think (big box) retail--what with all the other exigencies they must deal with, especially floor space issues--is a good barometer to use to judge a niche product's penetration/popularity. And I think that was an accurate statement before the online shopping revolution.

Just say (you) "[d]on't see much mainstream future in SACD." Big and important diff.

I think it will remain a jazz/classical format with the occasional pop/rock release (like the Elton John releases and the Dire Straits recently announced).

DVD-A seems to be broader in its genres, but even lower in total numbers. We'll have to see how DualDisc and the new hi-def formats pan out (they're supposed to have MLP as an option).

More on topic, my SACD of Joe Henderson--Lush Life just arrived today.

Gabriela-

any meaningful difference in sound/recording quality on those Billy Joel SACDs?

Or, to ask it another way, if you were going to get just one Billy Joel SACD album, which would it be, and why?

Overall An Innocent Man was great. Great hits and a balanced pop album of the early 80's. It's only 2CH SACD. Maybe I liked it more since I tried The Stranger and 52nd Street in Multichannel and personally did not like the surround sound. I put it in 2 ch and sounded much better. I believe Billy Joel's voice being at the center channel takes away the focus of the music around you and becomes somewhat distracting. That's just my opinion and a bit biased to 2ch.

I personally like The Stranger in 5.1, don't own the other 2, but I think it sound' good considering its age. It's not overly bright and harsh, but I find the surround mix to be well done and fitting...

I'd buy it over again, for sure.

Oh, recent, Bowie-Reality DualDisc(not high res), NIN on sacd and dual disc, and on order Clapton-layla, 461 ocean blvd, and Elton John-Honky Chateau
