I dunno, Rach--are more titles than not "rare" to the point of needing to cost more than, say, $25?

I can only speak from my experience and comment on titles I want--I know from this thread you have even more diverse tastes than me.

I have an Amazon Wish List of about 75 titles that I have been adding to and picking off for over at least five years now. I skim through that list a couple times a month to peep prices, see what perhaps dropped OOP, etc.

What I think Mike is, and I know I am, referring to is exemplified by Richard & Linda Thompson's Shoot Out the Lights SACD. I added it to my list I think in 2005. I haven't bought it yet because every time I check, it's still available at a reasonable price and there are higher buy priorities. Despite being on a boutique label (Hannibal), despite being unavailable through Elusive Disc, Music Direct and Amazon proper, there are still 11 copies available through Marketplace for between $11 and $28.

My point is: why haven't Marketplace merchants slowly dropped their prices to move their copies instead of letting it sit for literally years? Why can't I buy a used copy of that disc for, say, $5?

I quess the sellers are waiting out the market, waiting for demand to rise. They won't necessarily be successful. Demand is the uncertain variable here. We know that the majority of Sack-Dee titles are rare to relatively rare. Sellers must be counting on that.

Demand is the big mystery here. Has it peaked already? ....possibly? Ten years from now, there could be a revival of collecting physical media? A rare thing is good to have if demand ever rises. I suspect these sellers can afford to hold stuff a very long time if they choose to.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

Yeah...what Paul said.

I've seen a number of DVD-A titles show up as "used" items in some of my local shops when it's pretty evident that they are just being clearanced out. Yet, every once in a while when I stumble upon a title of interest--that recent DVD-A of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, for example, that I found...they are still marked in the $20 to $25 range.

Although you might disagree, you gotta figure most people walking into their local stores looking at CDs probably have NO IDEA what a DVD-A even is!

And that's what I meant, Paul, by "top dollar."

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

There's a huge demand factor! I've explained what DVD-A and SACD are to so many folks. I sold my JVC DVD-A player to my friend Billy the Mountain sometime early in this century. I told him it was DVD-A capable but that, evidently, went in one ear and out the other. He never found out what precisely a DVD-A disc was till about a month ago when I had a pile of DVD-A's out that he noticed whilst visiting.

There are maybe 600,000 households in the world with a working HD DVD player and many of those HD DVD titles that sell for less than $5 were pressed in the hundreds of thousands. I have no idea why, they only sold in the few thousand range as a general rule up to the time the plug was pulled. There are well over 20,000,000 working SACD players in the world chasing the 5,500 titles that were released with thousands of titles in very small quantities relative to the installed player base. Now, not that many of the SACD players are used for SACD much, especially the many million PS3 consoles in service but enough are that prices for SACD have remained high. If SACD titles are rereleased on Blu-ray, then the value will likely go down. The same situation exists with DVD-A with about 1,500 or so titles released, many in very limited quantities and many millions of players in service.

It is simple supply and demand. I think some HD DVD titles like King Kong, The Bourne Identity and a few others must have been made available in quantities greater than the number of players in service hardly a surprise the price is so low. Once the Blu-ray version of the HD DVD is available, the demand becomes even smaller.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

Just got Dexter Gordon's "Dexter Calling" on SACD from Analogue Productions, remastered by the amazing Steve Hoffman and Kevin Grey! The sound on this is so warm, spacious and clear, I feel like I'm listening to Rudy Van Gelder's session master unfiltered! The quality's right up there with their remaster of Coltrane's "Blue Train" on SACD, so I'm definitely a happy camper on this one!

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

More musings, Mike: There's also a more pedestrian explanation that some of these sellers don't necessarily know what DVD-A/SA-CD are, but they figure it's something upmarket/esoteric so they keep the prices higher than they otherwise would. But it is indeed interesting how the opposite mentality is at work WRT HD DVD ('No one wants those so that's why we don't offer much in trade/price them so cheaply.')

Another anecdotal bit I find interesting re Amazon: In terms of pricing, Marketplace sellers often take advantage of when something is purportedly OOP when it in fact may simply not be carried by Amazon. This may be a particular issue for those very boutique labels doing high rez.

I want a copy of Patrice Rushen and "Ndugu" Chancler's Piano, Bass & Drums DVD-A and forgot that AIX sells via their own site. I was a little wrecked by the one copy on Marketplace being priced at $89.99.

Since they're a short drive away in L.A., I called the label about availability. Remarkably, label founder and chief engineer Mark Waldrep answered the phone. We chit chatted and he confirmed he has plenty of copies available to come in and purchase, or buy via the Website, for $24.98. It's just not financially advantageous for him to distribute via Amazon.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

I'm finding this ALL fascinating...from Paul's chit chatting, to Chris' stats on the number of SACD players to Rachael's "Billy the Mountain."

I'm getting the picture that supplies of both SACDs and DVD-As are limited...but how many enthusiasts are there really out there? I'm assuming the bulk of the 20,000,000 SACD players are NOT used for SACDs...or else we wouldn't be having this discussion...we'd all be out shopping. Well, except for me 'cuz I don't have an SACD player.

I'm thinking along the lines of Paul: one man's rarity...is another man's garage sale passover. I have been crazy wanting to find a copy of the DVD of the 1972 Sleuth (Olivier/Caine) for sale...but not wanting to pay eBay's "OOP prices." I figure one day I'll find one sitting in a cutout bin somewhere.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

Mike,

Go buy that used Denon 2900 over in the forsale section so you can play SACDs (and DVD-As too) on a high quality player. If my own Denon 2910 had seen more wear, I'd jump on that used 2900 in the forsale section now. We've only used the 2910 as our main player for about a year (before buying the PS3) though I plan on using it for DVDs regularly again. In fact, now that we are going back to using the Denon for DVDs, I'm actually tempted to pull the trigger on that used 2900.

I tend to agree with Rachael. I think SACD prices will continue to climb. They are relatively rare and they will be sought out for sound quality for the most part. I expect the earlier MFSL discs especially will climb.

Also, I picked up the last Ladysmith SACD on Telarc/Heads Up and the Holst Planets by Bernstein on Sony.

I got Sailing To Philly on SA-CD when it came out. I'd concur it's audio is terrific. It's not become a fav though. I bet I've only listened to it about 3 times. I'm too busy with the Kinks n'all. You should'a got the Kinks when they were in-print, I think I got my pair from CD Univers for about $25....the good ole daze.... After all, "we all need a taste", at a reasonable price....

I got in the E.L.P. Brain Salad Surgery SA-CD set from Britan today. I've heard the sonics are not tip-top but decided to collect a copy. If I can't get Trilogy on Sack-Dee, this'll have to do.

I though that maybe Sailing was released in European on SACD or something. Shangri-La is kinda meh, and Sailing is great - so maybe she did mix up the titles.

It is Shangri-la that I have, oui.

I had fun listening to ELP. It sounded good in stereo to me. It doesn't sounds as good as when I saw them live in Quad. I'll have to try the other 2 discs in the set.
