Pretty sure Sky Captain is mixed for EX use...It may not be packaged like that but I'm sure it has center surround content.
Anyway...
I saw at Best Buy yesterday, the Punisher (John Travolta version) re-released with DD 5.1EX and DTS Discrete 6.1.
I'm assuming the regular dvd just had DD 5.1 on it.
Another supporter of 1080p and uncompressed multi-channel sound!

Mao,Sorry for the long delays in updates. As I had written early in the thread (probably a few pages back), I'm in school full-time, working full-time and raising a 22 month old and an 11 year old (both girls). My time is minimal.
I love this thread too!
Although as of late, the number of EX/ES titles has been minimal in comparison to the overall DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray picture. Probably like 1% of titles released.
Anyway, I'll do what I can, when I can.
May all your surround sound be in 7.1 discrete! - old HT proverb!

then it'd just be DTS 5.1 normal. when you go DTS-ES, it is only 6.1 Discrete or Matrix no in between.Quote:

no, i was just explaining that when you say DTS WITH the ES: DTS-ES, it is ONLY 6.1 Discrete or Matrixed. there is no such monster as DTS-ES 5.1 as that would just be DTS 5.1 normal. DTS-ES means 6.1 and 6.1 MEANS only matrixed or discrete. i believe ES means extra surround or somn. som1 probably knows what that means.to the edge of eternity and depth of infinity, stupidity knows no bound.

Oh, you guys forgot another movie. Happy Feet is in DD EX -- it says so on the back of the DVD cover (and definitely sounded that way in the theater as well). Don't know if the theatrical DTS-ES track was matrixed or discrete -- but the DVD is just DD EX only.

Actually the correct nomenclature is:DD-EX 5.1
DTS-ES 5.1 (matrix)
DTS-ES 6.1 (discrete)
The reasoning is that if you actually list a number 5.1 or 6.1 that refers to the number of DISCRETE channels. Since DD-EX is matrix and DTS-ES matrix is obviously matrix they are NOT discrete and thus only listed as 5.1. The only one that can be refered to as 6.1 is the DTS-ES discrete.
I know it gets confusing. I have a 7.1 speaker set-up and do the following:
DD 5.1 + DDPLIIx (the two rears output stereo matrixed channels)
DD-EX (the two rears output mono matrixed channels)
DTS 5.1 + DTSNEO6 (the two rears output mono matrixed channels)
DTS-ES (the two rears output mono matrixed or discrete channels depending on the ES variety)
I am playing more than 5.1, but you can't really call it 6.1 or 7.1 (except for the DTS-ES discrete being 6.1 of course). Its just DD-EX or DTS-ES.
Now onward to
DD+, DD+-EX, DDTrueHD (which can be 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1)
DTS-HD, DTS-HD ES (matrix or discrete), DTS-HD High Resolution Audio (5.1, 6.1, or 7.1) and finally DTS-HD Master Audio (5.1, 6.1, or 7.1)
Fun huh?

Okay...so I just reorganized all my DVDs (my meager 250 count) by audio encoding, just to see what I've got. As it turns out, I have 30 DTS (5.1) discs, 13 DD EX discs and a whole 3 DTS ES discs - Die Another Day, Running Man and Rush Hour 2. The rest are regular DD 5.1, 2.0 or mono.It seems like the studios are less interested, these days, in encoding in the extended surround formats, as many of the franchises, such as Harry Potter, Pirates, etc, are foregoing extended surround on their sequels hereafter. Is it because they've set their sights on the HD discs or what? DTS-ES disc selections are especially sparse. Perhaps this was discussed earlier on in this thread? If so, I apologize.

there are a few action movies that have good masters that can lend themselves to be benefitted from a 6th rear center channel. an example is LOTR:EE, it is such a new film that peter jackson wants as many channels as possible. when they are released on HDDVD they will be 7.1 pcm because they weta studios still have all of the masters in lossless high resolution high quality originals. and plus, there are periods of hefty action sequences that would naturally lend themselves to the newest multichannel formats. that was after 2000.think about it. although Dolby Digital, DTS has been around since 1992, 1993 it doesn't mean the industry automatically jumped onboard. many of them waited until SD-DVD's rolled around to begin incorporating much of the tools into films. i also read that a lot of the authoring tools (like protool) used 44.1/48kHz/16-bit masters and never stored them to 96 or higher masters. and that's only for films that have been around since the 1990's. i would have to say that film in the late 90's onward (really only in the last 10 years) have taken *full* advantage of surround sound.
a lot of films in the early 90's and before that sounds flat unless they are totally remastered and remixed for the surround sound schema. so while we think surround sound has been around for ages, technicians have really optimized and started to utilize them in films for the last decade.

But there again is my point - how come (do you think) Jackson didn't give King Kong the extended surround treatment he afforded to LOTR?Given the stunning visuals and exciting action sequences in KK, it seems like it was a wasted opportunity. Are studios and filmakers holding out on SD discs in order to sell their HD discs?
Probably not a subject for this thread, but I'm thinking George Lucas will likely skip SD/lossy audio altogether when finally releasing the full box set of Star Wars. Opinions?

Probably, but I got the 2-disc special edition and I know it isn't encoded in EX (let alone
ES), whereas EX encoding extends across all editions of LOTR.
