DD-EX & DTS-ES encoded movies listing

Shane,
Could you provide a link? The most comprehensive list of HD titles I've seen is Juan C's on page 3 of this thread:
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htfo...hreadid=248643

I haven't come across any listings of titles which will be in EX/ES.

Scott,
What about movies that have 5.1 tracks with identical content on both surround channels? Doesn't all of the sound collapse into the rear speakers?

I know this guy who designs and installs sound systems for movie theaters, and he's violently opposed to EX because many theaters use it all the time, regardless of whether or not the film is encoded for it. Often times with non-EX movies, the result is that sound which should be "surrounding" the listeners is only coming from behind them.

I think this guy is a little extreme with his thinking. However, I do personally prefer to listen to movies in the format that they were mixed in so that it sounds as much as possible like the filmmakers intended.

Mike - Well, yes. They do "collapse" into the center surround. The thing is I have my side surrounds at a 90 degree angle. My back surround are in the back corners (about a foot or so away from the side walls). This is about the position you might put your "regular" surround speakers if you had (just) 5.1 for best effect.

So when something "collapses" into the center surround it isn't just behind my head. The sound [rant]is[/rant] the back of the room. Just like it's supposed to.

Because this doesn't seem to ruin the older movies I keep it in EX mode. If I didn't use it in my setup then the original 5.1 will sound, "meh". Then I would say the EX channel is "collapsed" into the side surrounds. That would suck ass!

Sorry for the rant.

So yeah, EX on if ya like it. EX off if ya don't want it.

Oh, and add MUNICH to the list (found it on the Dolby website). There's no word yet on the DVD release, but it will at least include a DD EX track. (But considering Spielberg loves to include DTS on his movies, I'm guessing it will include a DTS ES track, too.)

My Denon receiver allows me to specify that if an EX flag is not detected, it applies DPLIIx to extract a "rear center" from the existing surrounds. My understanding is that it does about the same thing (more or less) when extracting a true EX center rear, so I'm covered either way: if it is EX the rear center is extracted correctly, and if it is not it extracts an "artificial" rear center. Of course, DTS ES is a different animal altogether, since it can be either discrete or matrixed...

Instead of using the EX/ES setting on my Receiver, I know use PLIIx for all my DD material, and DTS ES for my DTS material, obviously.

PLIIx ensures that regardless of whether the discrete channel is there or not, you'll get Surround Back sound, in stereo.

Here are the suggestions I got from Fraoch over on AVS. Good stuff:

For a 6.1 setup:

TV, mono (old movie): Mch STEREO
TV, stereo: PLIIx MV
CD, TV music: PLIIx MS
DVD (old Dolby Surround format like Blade Runner, a few TV show DVDs and DVD commentaries): PLIIx MV (may be automatically selected or you could force it)
DVD, DD: DD EX (DD should come on automatically, you need to set EX mode initially and it may automatically set PLIIx MV when you are in the menu)
DVD, DTS: DTS ES (matrix/discrete) (should come on automatically when you select it in the DVD menu, set ES mode initially)

For a 7.1 setup:

TV, mono (old movie): Mch STEREO
TV, stereo: PLIIx MV
CD, TV music: PLIIx MS
DVD (old Dolby Surround format like Blade Runner, a few TV show DVDs and DVD commentaries): PLIIx MV (may be automatically selected or you could force it)
DVD, DD: DD+PLIIx MV (DD should come on automatically, you need to set PLIIx MV mode initially and it may automatically set PLIIx MV when you are in the menu)
DVD, DTS: do not use as PLIIx mode can't be used with it on the Marantz receivers

Updates added. Thanks to all who contributed.

I'll continue the listing through HD-DVD/Blu-Ray and we'll denote those with a green asterisk or something.

Please add "Lord of War" to the DTS 6.1 discreet list. I am not sure about the single disc one but the 2 disc edition indeed has a 6.1 soundtrack.

Just a quick question about Saw II. I noticed it is listed at the start of the thread as dts ES. I have the DVD and it is indeed Dolby Digital EX but there isn't a dts sound track on the disc. Are there 2 versions of the disc that I'm not aware of (I checked Amazon and only the one I have is listed along with the full screen version) or was this a typo in the dts list? I would be disappointed to find out if there is a dts version considering I bought the Dolby version

Thanks,

Rod

Both Dolby and DTS list SKY CAPTAIN as having a rear center channel theatrically. I don't think there's any reason to believe that the DVD would be different.

Also, CARS will be in EX, much to the shock of everyone.

As far as I know, almost any film that as Split-Surrounds, whether it’s Dolby-EX encoded or not is neither hear or there, for the past 8 years now, I have been using a Dolby Pro-Logic decoder amplifier, which as been re-plugged, and via using the pre-outputs from the Kenwood KRF-X9050D THX select, which is outputting the split-surrounds to the Pioneer VSP-200 where decoding of the phantom central imaging is decoded.

Anyway, I guess a lot of you don’t really need to know all the details, except it does work and I haven’t got a single complaint about it's performance.

More recently, I have utilised the use of the Extra channel on the rear of the Pioneer VSP-200, to give me height surround, or (Sonic Whole Overhead Sound) which does work, and as been in use since late October 2005.

All the Pioneer VSP-200, and the Dolby Pro-Logic circuitry is looking for is, in-phase and out-phase signals within the Split-Surrounds mix.

Films like “We Where Soldiers” perfumes very well, as does “Apollo 13” the list can go on forever, so there it is.

My spelling isn’t all that great, but yes it does perform, you know what I meant, although the film “Polyester” springs to mind, as does (((Sensurround))) aka Earthquake 1974.

Anyway hope you had a real giggle over that last comment about Split-Surrounds.

Re: DD-EX & DTS-ES encoded movies listing

Today's release of MUNICH reminded me of a few titles that aren't on the list:

Munich
King Kong
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

And when it comes out, Cars will be EX too.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: DD-EX & DTS-ES encoded movies listing

MIKE ARe you sure about those 3.

i just watched sky captain again the other day and munich.
neither of those turns on my rear backs on my denon.
i didnt think to force them for munich but for sky captain it doesnt
create any sound from the center rears for me, it does collapse the rear surrounds .

is there a list published somewere for this thats official?

Re: DD-EX & DTS-ES encoded movies listing

Both Dolby and DTS have all three of those movies listed on their websites. It wouldn't surprise me if either were wrong, but both? That's stretching it. I can also personally verify that the DTS discs shipped to theaters with prints of MUNICH had the extra digit in the serial number, which is an indication that the sound is encoded in ES.

Re: DD-EX & DTS-ES encoded movies listing

I don't really know anything about this stuff. I haven't actually heard any of these movies in EX. But I can't really see new mixes being done for the DVDs where they actually remix the sound onto less channels. I suppose it's possible, but it doesn't really make any sense to me.

Here's a question, which I suppose is the point of this thread, but why can't studios just clearly label what type of soundtracks a DVD has? Is that really too much to ask?
