| Is the Dolby Digital EX 6.1 sound too? |
You could technically say that given the fact that you have a six (6) speaker setup. But actually it's a 5.1 sound with a derived (or matrixed) sixth channel.

I updated the list with this one pending further verification (although it looks very legit).

Aaron,
Thanks for the update. I'm not to keen to adding titles based on what the receiver picks up. A lot of the titles that the receiver flags as ES/EX aren't actualy encoded that way. We've had similiar issues with some other Slingshot products as well.
I'll do some checking and keep you updated.

Can we assume that Die Another Day (comes out in May) will be DD EX?

We could, more than likely it will be, but you know what they say about assumptions.

Good news indeed...

According to Dolby.com, there's only 3 releases this year that will be EX encoded;
The Matrix: Reloaded
The Matrix: Revolutions
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Things aren't looking good for EX/ES. I wonder why more studios aren't using this format more often. Is it a money issue?

Until recently, I think EX/ES were both home formats only. I know that dts-ES just recently (like in the last month) started coming to theaters. Remember, there's still a lot of titles to be released on DVD that may have EX/ES. I wouldn't think it would be licensing issues, since I assume EX/ES would most likely be included with DD or dts. Since a lot of films do surround mixes in post-production, chances are they may not have informed either Dolby or dts what their mixes are.

Jesse,
Actually you've gotten it backwards. EX was first introduced to the theaters by Lucasfilm and THX (when Lucas owned it) and is still being promoted as a theater surround format. DTS-ES (both varieties) did follow suit on DVD and as far as I know, is slowly trickling into the theaters.
The first EX encoded movie was Episode I back in 1999.

The way it works is a movie is released in EX in the theaters and then the DVD is encoded with EX or ES.
There are a very small handful of titles (probably less than 10) that have an EX/ES mix and their movie counterpart didn't, specifically for catalog release titles.

How about Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets? Isn't that in 5.1EX? Ron's review certainly indicated it was. Thanks for maintaining this list...saves us all alot of leg work!

Thanks!
Anyway, both of these titles have been added. I'll double check on the DTS side of PDL and update accordingly.

Can someone please explain all these to me? I'm just a little bit behind in the home audio department...
1)Okay, Dolby Digital 5.1 Two rears, two in front, and the center. So, that's five channels, and a subwoofer. What's with the .1? Does that refer to the sub or something?
2) Dolby Digital 5.1 EX. Okay, I think EX means that there's a sixth rear center channel. However, apparently it's not really a real channel, but a hybrid of some sort. Can someone elaborate?
3) I think DTS sounds awesome and I know it takes up more space on a DVD. However, what's really the difference between DTS and Dolby Digital other than it usually being another mix?
4) Is DTS setup the sameway as Dolby Digital? IE... 5.1?
5) DTS-ES. Does that mean that it has a sixth rear center channel too? It's really a channel instead of matrixed so it is 6.1 right?
6) DTS-ES Matrixed, DTS-ES Discrete. I'm totally lost on these two, what's the difference?
7) I see a lot of references to LFE. What is that exactly?
8) Anything new in the works?
Once again, I apologize for my ignorance and would really appreciate any replies or any links to some FAQs or guides or something. Thanks guys!

| I'm sure that someone here may have found this, but the following URL takes you to a complete listing of all titles in DTS format (DTS-ES and Matrix formats are embedded in this list) |
I'm not sure about everyone else, but I've been aware of that list for quite some time.
That list isn't as accurate and it isn't updated as frequently (updated quaterly). I've spoken to the individual responsible for getting the list together on several occassions in regards to certain ES titles to clarify/verify and her information has been inaccurate several times.

List updated...Thanks as always Dan.

No doubt that LOTR:TT will be the same as before. I hope they make a press release soon.
