To my suprise, my receiver detected a rear-center signal when choosing the DTS track on 'Riding with the King' by 'Eric Clapton & B.B. King'. It was DTS-ES Matrix 6.1.

Troy,
Did you see thebits is reporting not DTSES on the 1982 version of ET on the collectors set (3 disc) but it is present on the 2 disc?

I don't understand why the 3-D IMAX videos are not DTS-ES matrix if the DD track is EX. If they used the same uncompressed 5.1 master during encoding to DD and DTS, then both contain a matrixed back surround channel.

You know I remember seeing a cardboard stand-up ad for "Wild Wild West" in a theater way back in 1999 and saw a Dolby Digital EX logo on it, I remember thinking "Cool". I'm not sure if they transferred it to the DVD but I would bet it is!

I'll double check on that and make any updates accordingly.

I did, thanks. The list has been updated accordingly.

I'm not sure and I really don't understand it either. The only thing I could think of is that they did the DTS encoding without the ES portion/extension of it (like they downmixed the 5.1 EX track to DTS 5.1). More people are confirming it's not ES than are confirming it is. I may just pick up the titles to see.

I think this question has been asked here before but not definitively answered...what DD-EX DVD's have the flag to switch the receiver into 6.1 mode automatically? Thus far I know of one where this worked...the French soundtrack on Pearl Harbor automatically engaged DD-EX on my Sony 'DA4ES.

Great list, BTW...thanks Troy!

And that Flag was a mistake as Pearl Harbor is not EX only 5.1 accordingly to Roger Dressler from Dolby Labs!

There are a few new DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 and DD EX titles coming next year from Anchor Bay.

Day of the Dead
Dawn of the Dead
The Man Who Fell To Earth

and very possibly Making Contact

There are other titles listed but no sound formats were mentioned.

I just re-confirmed that all three IMAX 3D DVDs are indeed flagged as DTS-ES Matrix. At least, that's what my receiver says, and I was careful to make sure it's in "auto" mode.

I just bought the 2-disc Limited Collector's Edition of E.T., and according to the packaging, the DTS soundtrack is supposed to be DTS-ES. However, my decoder certainly isn't auto-decoding it as such. Is there mistake on the packaging, did the flag get inadvertently left off, or is my receiver screwed up? My receiver's never had any problem auto-decoding DTS-ES Matrix tracks in the past.

Things are looking kinda shady for the beginning of next year. Nothing forthcoming that I've heard about, although there aren't many actual movies being released in EX/ES either.

Troy,

Is Minority Report ES encoded? DVDFile.com reports the disc as EX and ES encoded but I seem only to be able to get the EX to auto play with my EX/ES capable processor. The DTS track when selected displays as DTS 5.1. Can you confirm or deny the ES encoding?

Minority Report is DTS-ES matrix encoded. Universal, in their infinite wisdom, left the flag off.

In fact, DreamWorks hasn't remixed anything to DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 since Chicken Run, The Haunting, and Gladiator. Too bad!

Hi Troy, I just got the Paul McCartney Back in the U.S. concert DVD as an early Christmes present, and no where on the packaging will you find the DTS logo but in the setup menu you'll find "DTS Digital Surround" option, my Denon 3802 flags it as DTS ES Matrix 6.1! Nice surprise!

A question for the admins:

Since this is a fairly important topic, is there a way to make this a sticky or equivalent? This is very useful information, more so now that 6.1 is finally catching on.

Anthony,

That is a nice surprise, but only if your receiver is flaggin the sound mix correctly. I've done some preliminary checking and haven't been able to verify anything. I'll check some more.

Jesse,

This thread has already been 'stickied'. According to policy, it can only be done so once (outside of HTF info). Thanks for the effort.

Troy, I double checked again and my Denon 3803 flags it as ES MTRX. I also tested a few other DVD's I have as well and this was my results:

Panic Room ES MTRX
Goldmember ES DSCRT
Gladiator ES DSCRT
Se7en ES DSCRT

Can anyone with the Paul McCartney "Back in the U.S." DVD confirm this? Click on the audio setup, pick DTS Surround, what does your receiver flag it as?

Thanks, Tony

Minority Report is now the second disc to be flagged correctly on the Dolby Digital for EX, but incorrectly for the DTS ES (Atlantis: Collector's Edition being the other). Quite odd considering 90% of the time it's the other way around. In fact, Jurassic Park III is the only disc on the market with both tracks flagged correctly.

since i don't have a receiver that shows the flag, are you guys sure about Minority Report? the menus don't say anything about EX or ES, and the cover doesn't either. usually for a matrixed surround center, don't they have a hollow box in the "box icon"?

Street date update...

Anthony,

I wouldn't put too much credibility in what your receiver says especially since it's flagging Panic Room as EX Matrix and it's definitely not so. Receiver's can interpret some flag's incorrectly and that's been commented on since the beginning of this thread.

Any other updates?
