Rob:
You actually watch the dubs for the various
Tenchi shows? Those are bad enough to make your ears bleed

.
Cowboy Bebop I can understand, although I myself prefer the original cast.
Vampire Hunter D and
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust have decent dubs, too.
Woo:
No problem

Well, it's DVD Day(TM) again so what, if anything, will you be buying this week? I've got

Damn - AL#5 's out? Gotta preorder stuff - Maisson Ikkoku Coll #3 as well.
Gotta get shopping. I got a bunch of stuff from ddd and rightstuf that I ain't gonna list here, but if you look in my collection link, you will see what I got. Glad to say that I now possess all of You're Under Arrest - the movie and the minispecials (I already possess all of the tv series - 4 boxes from animeigo). As to when I will watch it... well I got FF XI for the ps2 last wednesday so like kong, you will see me here less often.
So looks like I will try to get Rahxephon as well. Too many series and manga. Too little time and money. Blechh - the travails of a collector...
UPDATE: just ordered AL #5 and #6, Maison Ikkoku Coll #3 and City Hunter 2 col 1 and col 2.

I notice a civil dub discussion going on.
I watch most anime dubbed. I noticed I tend to prefer movies subbed and series dubbed. I THINK it's because, in a series, identification with the characters and their issues is most important - and decent dub VAs bring the story and performance across more clearly, easier to identify with the characters and their suffering/issues/triumphs.
With movies, it's a one-shot deal, long-term identification with the characters is not so important as is accurate translation of the dialogue...maybe?
Not quite sure why I prefer series dubbed and movies subbed.
Something that always sticks in my head is in Escaflowne (movie or series) when Van shouts "Brother!" It always seems like the English VA totally nails that co-mingled love/anger/respect/disdain type thing they have going on. Just right. All in one itty bitty little word.
But I hate changes to the script with a passion, or dumbing down of a word in translation. I actually listen to the dub for Crest/Banner of the Stars *ducking the flame attacks*. Since I started watching it that way a couple years back (one of my first animes since I gave up watching in the late 90s), it doesn't seem right to watch it any other way. But the translations are frequently horrible, and Crest's dub (using that Wordfit crap) is very erratic.
Matheson- "There are probably some who'll say that by doing this, we are interfering with their culture."
Gideon - "Probably. Screw them."

Yeah, I know, but since they use the same actors, (especially for D), I just lump it in with all the 'real' dubs.

Heh - zenki is fun but average series. It seems I did well to avoid seeing the dub. Me, I am lucky to see just the subbed versions, as I collect quite a bit o' anime. Between the job, games (final fantasy 11 for ps2 right now, first MMORPG), and anime/manga I have no time to rewatch a series, much less the dub.
As anti dub I may seem, I actually support dubs in the sense that they will broaden the audience *and customer* base, leaving the distributers a chance to bring lesser known series.
The two dubs I thoroughly enjoyed in my life of anime were three:
My Neighbor Totoro - despite his much maligned rep, Macek and Streamline did produce the Fox dvd/vhs dub of My Neighbor Totoro. Thoroughly enjoyable for all audiences, and a great dub to boot. Feels just like the Japanese, except in English.
Kiki's Delivery Service and
Spirited Away were the other two dubs worthy of mention.
Hey Stacey - it's upto #8 for KareKano, you know? chop chop

Woohoo a dub discussion! Let me get in on this. Ahh sorry I just can't resist the pull!
I started my anime watching with dubs... the place I used to buy my VHS tapes from really only carried dubs so that's what I would buy. Later on however with DVD you finally get a choice... and it depends on the show which I watch (or prefer). Usually I will watch the first episode of anything both ways and choose from there. Except Fruits Basket. I fell in love with the dub instantly. I also like script changes. I don't mind if they try to American-ize things at all for the dubs, with pop culture references, etc. (Those Who Hunt Elves ). The result is usually ends up in something I really enjoy. As long as the sub is kept more true to the original why not have some fun with the English language version?
Spirited Away I thought had an abysmal dub. Some of it was ok but the little girl's name (gawd I've seen this three times and can't remember her name LOL) was absolutely... well it made my mind melt. My coworkers still pick on me by screeching out "I want a job, give me a job, I want a job!!!!" sometimes...
The Nausicaa dub I'm really looking forward to. Patrick Stewart should be awesome as Lord Yupa. Princess Mononoke is another movie with an exceptional dub...
Although I do try to watch both dub and sub if I have the opportunity!
BTW: ended up getting Slayers NEXT and World of Narue. I'm crazy! I'm addicted! I'm insane! Or so my bf says. Stop the anime madness now!!!

Seriously Tenchi Muyo! OVA 1 can hold its own with any of the new releases - the character designs, the wonderful personalities, and well the great voice acting by the seiyuu make it all so worth while. The first time I saw it at an anime club over 10 yrs ago made me fall in love with the show. I was VERY happy to have my own
Tenchi Muyo! Ultimate Edition.

Uh oh...posts two days in a row. I think I felt the earth lurch a little

.
All:
DVD Day(TM) was good to me again. I picked up
Angelic Layer vol. 5,
Najica Blitz Tactics vols. 1-3, and the April 2004 issue of NewType, which has the first episode of
Azumanga Daioh, for the 3 or 4 of us who haven't seen it yet

. I also got a chance to watch
Angelic Layer vol. 5 last night. More good episodes, but I'm kind of getting frustrated with
Warning Spoiler! Click to showthe way that Misaki does the same "I can't do it" stuff for each battle. The writers may have thought that this is dramatic, but not after the Nth time. Grrr...

Anyway, still a good series, and well worth picking up.
John.

Sorry I don't lurk here as often I should. Mostly, I am working or on AO(HEL)L Instant Messenger. That said, I am way behind on anime - being sucked up into games and right now, the choice du jour is Final Fantasy XI.

LOL. That's one of the reasons I won't play MMORPGs. That, and I refuse to pay for a game just to keep playing it, after I've payed the $40-50 for it. I know what you mean about the anime, though. I was surprised I got as much watched as I did in March, with the move and all. Now, at least, I can ramp up again. I didn't get a chance to watch the NewType disk yet, but I did watch His and Her Circumstances vol. 3 last night. I've been keeping my eye open for any big quality changes, but other than some stylistic stuff with the episodes (which I liked), I didn't notice anything. So far, this has been a 'B' series, and not really that exceptional, but worth the watch.

Heh - JohnAD:
His and Her Circumstances - the first two discs are A/A+ material. The series however, is plagued with the dreaded recap syndrome, with two entire eps on disc 3 that entirely recaps of what went on before. Sadly, your assessment of the series as a whole seems about right.
FF XI is pretty good stuff. So many things to do; and it's hard to do well without good equipment. Money and EXP are problems. So far, I have two chars created in the game. One is a female red haird Elvaan Red Mage at lvl 5 named.... RAMENCHEF. Another is a blonde female Hume monk named Wooman at lvl 9.

I'm not sure I'd characterize the first two disks as being that good. Maybe it's because H&HC follows the manga so closely, but I thought they were good, but not great. I'm also finding the manga to be a 'B' as well, so that may have something to do with it.
A couple of friends of mine play Evercrack, which was enough to keep me from MMORPGs for good

. I did play Dark Age of Camelot on a friend's account once. It was ok, but kind of repetitive. I had some initial interest in playing Star Wars: Galaxies, but since you had a hell of a time trying to get to be a Jedi, that was right out, too.
