HTF Anime Discussion Part VII

Alright, I went to Tokyo Godfathers. I have to say the the animation itself was not always quite what one would wish [although part of that may have been the print] but all in all Madhouse seem to have done a very good job, and most of it does look wonderful. I enjoyed the story and the setups quite a bit. I have the corroborative opinion of my sister, without whom I don't watch much anime [I just don't feel right watching video, or going to a movie, alone], who loved the ending credits but is just slightly put out that she's now going to be singing the "Ode to Joy" for days. It's not like it's my fault that she has had it memorised in English and German ever since our parents played it at their wedding [a long story].

Rob, importing Tenchi OVA3 is fine, just as long as it has English subs and is region free.

Ah, nevermind, I see it's priced at ~$50 for each 30min episode. No thanks, I'll wait for the US release.

It's strongly suspected in some quarters that Funimation, who did GXP in U.S. release, will pick up Tenchi OVA3; since they seem to be pretty quick workers, if they are indeed involved we may have an announcement by midyear and the first disc may come out before the series finishes in Japan. When Pioneer did that with the second part of the Tenchi OVA it was something new, but at this late date it should not seem too odd, even for a series of only 13 episodes.

I don't know all that much about the Tenchi universe as I just picked up the OVA box a few months ago.

What's the deal with all the Tenchi iterations? Tenchi in Tokyo, etc? I know the OVA is considered by many to be the "official" Tenchi. Why was so much time spent on other series and not continuing the OVA?

Eric...

$$$$$

Tenchi OVA3 doesn't have subtitles on R2 DVD (as with 98% of titles), so even then it's moot.

Well, Last night I finished off Pretear (RS seems to have thier stuff together for once since that doesnt' come out till the 30th!)
I have to say, for being what I thought would be a silly magical girl anime this story was actually really good! I actually felt like the story was held back by being in a magical girl anime because i think when the main character "preeted" that was the worst part of the whole thing! The whole fight sequences were just bad but the story was excellant...go figure!
So...all in all, my first "magical" girl anime gets two thumbs up!

# Fushigi Yugi - The Mysterious Play Vol. #1 - 175 minutes - $24.98 - 07/27/2004

Hmmm... I'm torn here: the price is definitely right on the rerelease, but dammit, I still want that sweet-looking boxed set! I know it seems really silly to pay twice as much for nothing more than a sweet-looking box... but come on! It looks so SWEET!

Ben, my best friend has the boxes and trust me... you don't want them. After a few years of use (he's had them since they came out) the boxes are practically falling apart.

I'm going to taunt him with my solid keepcases

World of Narue: does anyone have any thoughts on this? I'm dangerously close to buying it but just preordered a bunch of other stuff (Arjuna Complete, Cutey Honey Essentials, Golden Boy Essentials, Gunsmith Cats) and that $48 dollar price tag is keeping me away thus far. heh. That and the fact I probably will want Key the Metal Idol complete when and if Deep Discount ever lists the thing on their site. Its still not there. *Pokes them* I want to preorder it dammit!

Anyway... World of Narue... fun? Or should I just hang on to my $50 and combo it up with another overtime day and grab off Slayers Next which Ive been wanting for awhile?

Im always asking this crap. I hope no one minds LOL

Ahh. Well, by DVD binge has finally caught up to me.
I now officially have enough unwatched stuff to last me for at least 6 more months.

Right now I'm on Stargate SG-1 Season 5. Next I'll watch S6. After that I suppose I'll watch some anime.

Argento Soma maybe? It's kind of heavy. Either that or the Sailor Moon boxes I just got.

I loved Narue no Sekae (World of Narue)... although it is a blantant Onegai Teacher ripoff. If you're a fan of OT-type shows, pick it up. I wasn't going to get it, but I like supporting the idea of cheap 13-episode shows (that $48 price tag includes every episode instead of having to buy 3-4 separate discs).

Thanx Rob.

I think I'll preorder it then. I want to totally support this trend of packaging stuff for cheapies. Although it could have been ever lower in pricing... its still not too bad considering I'm personally paying about $18 a pop for every three eps of Kiddy Grade or Inu Yasha. I've never seen Onegai Teacher so I don't know what type of show that would be.

If you're interested, you can check out The Master Key to Tenchi Muyo!, which is an older, but still useful guide to Tenchi Muyo!.

All:

The move is finished, but we're still having some issues with the DSL. On Friday, I was able to finish off Crying Freeman: Complete Collection. This one's definitely not for everyone. It's got lots of action and nudity, but not much of a plot. The first episode is the best one, and the other ones don't really stand out. I recommend getting the brick over the individual disks, since it's cheaper. This is a 'B-'. I also watched Kiddy Grade vol. 2. This one is fun, but certainly not profound.

Question to whose who own His and Her Circumstances. Do your DVD's have inserts in them? Cause I don't....

Mine don't. Neither did my brick for Boogiepop Phantom. Looks like TRSI doesn't bother to do them.

TRSI doesn't use inserts... a cost-saving measure that is spreading to more and more releases (anime or not).

I like what CPM does, use a clear case, then write the chapter listings on the opposite side from the cover... looks clean and you still get an "insert".

The weirdest thing about my TRSI Kare Kano discs is that I have 3 with black cases and 2 with clear cases (all bought direct from them )

Anyone been catching Noir on InHD? They're showing it in widescreen. Was the series shot in widescreen or are they matting it (or whatever) to fit it to widescreen dimensions?

This message ends with Todd.

I've noticed the same when I see them in a store. Some of the cases are clear and some are solid black.

Well, I saw the first two episodes of FLCL today. I really wanted to like this series, but so far it is just so pointless and boring.

I highly suspect NOIR on INHD is an upconvert, as it looks no better than the DVD. That said, the DVD is pretty damn good.

I tried out the Last Exile dub today (as I do with all my discs at least once) and... wow. This is the best dub I've heard since Cowboy Bebop.

Some of you guys may know me as a sub watcher... but there are still some shows I prefer dubbed...

Ceres
Cowboy Bebop (I feel they are about equal, and it is the only role I can stand Wendee Lee in)
Fushigi Yugi
Ranma 1/2
Tenchi series (although OVA I watch subbed, because it is in DD5.1)

Just thought you'd like to know

LOL. Fortunately, he's a schoolboy and already tucked in bed

Good dubs are still far and few between and most of them are just plain bad, if that makes ya feel any better

Yes, I'm coming out of the closet- I admit- If the dub is halfway decent I prefer over subs.

Now to really blow your minds, I will list my favorite English dubs (in no particular order):

Cowboy Bebop
The Big O
Blue Gender
Now/Then, Here/There
Generator Gawl (underrated)

Yeah, really nothing comes close to Bebop, although The Big O is sort of up there. In the last few years English dubs have improved a great deal.

Flame on!
