KOJAK on DVD????

BTW, people were wondering why Universal didn't include "The Marcus-Nelson Murders" in the DVD set, and after watching a very old off-air recording recently I think that if Universal didn't forget it about it, they may have felt that the focus of the movie clashed too much with how the series established itself. "The Marcus-Nelson Murders" was a dramatization of an actual murder case with names changed etc. (in the credits, Kojak's name is even spelled "Kojack") and Savalas as Kojak tends to get overshadowed a bit throughout the proceedings IMO.

I remember seeing "The Marcus-Nelson Murders" many years ago, and it was OK but not so great. The aspect of racism and police brutality are issues that came up again in the series.

My belief is that Universal will eventually release the TV-movie pilot separately.

Some good news: The quick fades to black were re-instated on these DVD episodes. You'll notice them starting on the second disc. Why they weren't present on the first disc I have no idea.

The second season has a much better theme song, and it's that classic bit of music that was heard for 3 years. I hope UNiversal puts out the 1974-75 season later this year because I miss it! I also liked the partially disco-ish KOJAK theme music (with new opening montage of scenes from past seasons) from the fifth season (1977-1978).

this was an impulse purchase for me a few weeks back and i've been enjoying it quite a bit.

a question for afficianados of the show regarding location shooting- i remember catching some episodes in the late 90s and i was startled by how much daytime NYC street shooting was in it.
on the other hand, on the eps i've seen on the first seaosn set, its pretty obvious to me that much of it is using the Universal backlot (the same streets/avenues seen in Kolchaks Chicago based series) with just a few NYC lensed inserts here and there.

did they move the show in later seasons to NYC or did they always just use 'canned' footage in a creative way?

Re: KOJAK on DVD????

Reviving a really old thread, but seeing how I'm just watching this for the first time...thought I'd put in my 2 cents.

First off, it's been at least 20 years since I remember seeing this show, and it is pure joy to watch it again. The location shooting in NYC is great fun to view. As for the DVDs, the prints look great. I've only seen the first 3 episodes so far, but I'm already giving this set a BIG thumbs up.

Seeing how old this thread is, I'm guessing Universal has pretty much given up on releasing any more seasons?

Re: KOJAK on DVD????

The small sliver of hope that I see for this show might be a release through a independent like Shout! Factory, which is releasing the second season of Adam-12 this Fall, after having been abandoned by Universal. At least Universal is willing to consider licensing its series to the independent releasing companies.

I agree, great fun. I remember watching with dad, and the prints are very good considering the age.
I thought the pilot was the worst of the 8 episodes I've seen so far. Probably because it was the pilot. The stories are getting better as the season progresses.

Hope someone does pick it up for more season releases.

Re: KOJAK on DVD????

I just finished watching Season One of "Kojak" and I think the show definitely got better as the season went on. I'm ready for Season Two!

The Marcus-Nelson Murders is out in Germany (R2) already, the recut 137 mins. European version, includes English audio. The original US version runs 125 mins. Season 2 of Kojak is out in Europe/Scandinavia, 29th this month.

Re: KOJAK on DVD????

I also hope that we will see additional sets of the show. Telly Savalas was truly great in this role. sadly season 1 of the show was released with the premiere of the new series with Ving Rhames. The show was short lived.

Sadly ving rhames kojak was god awful horrible bad and I think it killed the sales of kojak s1 (which came out shortly before kojak 2). I'm hoping maybe shout! (ie ironside and adam12) or another company will pick it up because its seems, Universal unless it magunm pi, wants to have their large tv library sit on the shelves and rot making zero dollars for them. Saddly I dont think theres going to be any more Kojak season sets soon unless someone like shout! deciedes to release it.

Q: Why do you care?

A: You'll never know.

Re: KOJAK on DVD????

Some more Kojak would be nice to see. I also like the opening theme they used later in the show better than the first season's version. I'm hoping Universal farms out this show because one season just isn't enough

Death to double sided DVDs!

Re: KOJAK on DVD????

LOL I actually like the orginal opening theme music best, the broadway musical opening of the last season alway annoyed me , but the episodes were generally good so I could live with it. Reguardless I want more Kojak asap

Oh cool chistopher walken was also in a episode of Hawaii five-0 too. He did quite a few TV guest star roles in the early 70's

FYI I saw in a store in Munich, the vol 1 for 17 Euros and it includes "The Marcus-Nelson Murders".

He has a very early role on a "Naked City". I think he's even credited under a different last name.

Yes, but US buyers may not want to invest in the whole season again, and can thus get it as stand-alone disc.
