2004 Film List

De-Lovely is an apt title for a film so unremittingly dour and joyless. It doesn't help that director Irwin Winkler gives it a flat, drab, sterile look. Ashley Judd is marvelous, but even the songs, which one would think would be a major part of the attraction, are lifeless due to the overall mood of the film. B-

Lower than Dodgeball if you read my last post. The first 5 minutes were almost walk-out bad for me. The script starts dreadful and never gets better in the least. HOWEVER, the cast is so strong that they are able to find great laughs in spite of the script, and based on the credits gag reel it would appear that much of the best laughs came from scenes of riffing.

Ferrell and Steve Carell especially shine, with Carell stealing the show from a 2nd top comedian in the last year (Bruce Almighty the last time). My only regret is that his success means his Daily Show appearances are dwindling.

Like Old School this is another tragic waste of good characters and premise, settling for mostly mediocre with a few high points that are destined for the reference hall of fame once the film circulates cable heavily (again, like Old School). Bonus kudos though for the clever use of a Smokey and the Bandit 2 clip.


Next up for me, the highly anticipated "best film of the year" BEFORE SUNSET (note, I just put Before Sunrise into my Netflix queue since I've never seen it).


Let me fudge here with a few films coming early in the 2nd 6 months and put up my first half top 10 with only 16 total viewings in so far (basically none of the weaker films and not Passion or Void yet either).

I did queue up basically every major 2004 release that I have missed so far and will be mixing it in with my S&S rentals in an attempt to catch up with some of you.

We all keep it in one post, but you might like to know that we use this thead primarily for 2004 Released Films. Some of us keep record of pre-2004 films but usually seperate the two sections, the first list in the thread is a good example of how some of us divide up the films into various sections.

I thought the political premise behind Spartan was so ridiculous and overwrought that it hurt my enjoyment of what was otherwise a well-done thriller.

Seth, I'm a big fan of the X-Men movies. I think they've stayed truest to the comic in terms of setting up "key" stories but then, the X-Men were the one "popular" comic that I read extensively. I never really read Spiderman, Superman, Batman (outside of a few key stories like Dark Knight Returns, Year One, and The Killing Joke), The Fantastic Four, The Hulk, Daredevil, etc. Outside of The X-Men my favorites - Dr. Strange, the Sub-Mariner, Firestorm, Groo aren't that well known outside comic circles. When I first got into comics as a kid I hardly got superhero books at all, I'd read stuff like Weird War, Sgt. Rock, The Haunted Tank, Micronauts, Shogun Warriors, etc.

I finished off Lucas Belvaux's trilogy and think it includes some very fine films, though I'm not sure if the interconnectivity aspect enhances things that much.

An Amazing Couple is a wonderful comic confection. One of those comedies of misunderstandings (the man has to have an operation that he thinks will kill him, he doesn't want to tell his wife about it, which results in her thinking he's having an affair) that builds and builds and builds with each lie and misperception. A ton of laughs, but also the film has a genuine affection for the characters, one of which we saw a different side of in the first film.

The film isn't thematically challenging like On The Run, but for me was the most enjoyable of the trilogy and for now will enjoy a deservedly high placement on my top 10. A-

After The Life - a drama primarily involving the cop character and his morphine addict wife and how her addiction controls both their lives. The film has some very powerful moments - these are characers we've seen in two previous films so we already have some sort of attachment/opinion of them - but I thought it was too compromised by the Trilogy structure. Too much time is spent re-enacting events from the first two films in slightly different ways/POV's. It detracts from the main story. - B

Joe, as Nick said, you can go your route (as Michael just has) or you can just keep 2004 releases in your list here. It is done both ways.


However, if you want to know how I use the thread and why it originally began, I'd say it was mostly to help support the year-end "top 10 of" thread. So it was mostly as a listing of that year's new releases.

I still go through the threads to see what other people though of what I just saw or sometimes to get an idea about a film I'm thinking of seeing.

I do not use it the way Michael just did because my post would be as long as his. My DVD stuff or non-recent stuff goes in other threads or unmentioned.

There is nothing wrong with you posting every viewing in the year, but for my sake and others like me it is very helpful if you can make a distinct section the lists only the 2004 films you have seen.

BTW, we still have the lists from at least the last 2 years out there if you look. My sig has links to my posts from the last couple which gets you into those threads, saving you the search.


Jason Whyte really got the film log idea going and should be commended for it. It's very helpful in raising your thoughts and awareness on how you view film.

But that's the diabolical part of Belvaux's Trilogy - is After The Life re-enacting scenes from An Amazing Couple, or is An Amazing Couple re-using footage from After The Life? Remember, the order is arbitrary.

Both Joe and I are switching sites so that's why our lists are a bit different than here. It's a little too late to start a new thread but we will do so next year because it seems to go well (listing everything you watch). Hopefully no one minds our rather large lists here and I did seperate the 2004 titles, although all but one of them are from HTF screeners. Since we're on page 8 I hope you regulars don't mind us squeezing in too much.

Well the 2003 thread is more than twice as long, I think there's room for you here.


As for how people do lists, we had plenty of debate on it years ago and in the top 10 threads, especially on "official release date".

Generally the form is to start your film post with a description of the basics. Your "year" criteria (Oscars, anywhere in the world theatrical, no festivals, etc), your rating scale (is the top 4 stars or 5, etc) and maybe how you order them (by release, by view, alpha).

Other than that it seems wide open.

I guess I do my list with my own considerations in mind, thus I put down alpha order and try to mark the top films in bold, assuming someone looking at my list just wants to find out my bottom line on a specific film or faves.

Definitely a YMMV situation though.

I noticed Bill McA (and myself) keep the 2001 List up to date, so that thread is still kicking.

Thanks for letting me skate a little, folks. I'll go back and be sure to put the "2004 Films" highlighted at the top of my list, if anyone's interested in them. As Michael Elliott said, we tend to list EVERYTHING we watch from all decades in any given year, and I'll be sure to begin a specific thread for that in 2005. But in the meantime, I appreciate being able to hang out here.

You guys also may want to explore using the smaller fonts. Bill and I list everything we see in our threads on page 1 but with the smaller fonts it's not quite so long or unwieldy. I also keep things in a few separate sections.

Jason, understood, but it's really speculation on my part to guess how I would feel if I saw the films in a different order, until/if I get the DVD's, I can only judge in the order I saw them. But I think After the Life would rank 3rd anyway because of how much I like the other 2 and I just don't feel as emotionally connected to the characters, though that is one factor I definitely could see improving if I saw After the Life first.

Updated my list with the 4th best "random comedy" of the summer: Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle.

This has been a great year for comedies. Anchorman, Napoleon Dynamite, Dodgeball, Eurotrip, Saved!, Girl Next Door... and now Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle.

In some foreign countries, this political premise is not at all that far-fetched. It's only a matter of time before it actually happens here in the U.S.

Not the worst of the year, actually, I've seen a few that are worse. I found it bad funny, not bad bad.
FWIW: I actually think that last years bad movies have been worse than this years bad movies...

In the three weeks since my last bump:

#68: The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra - - May have to knock that down a peg; deliberate camp just doesn't work.
#69: Spider-Man 2 - - A movie made just for me, or at least that's how it felt.
#70: I'll Sleep When I'm Dead - ¾ - Too clinical by half.
#71: Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy - - Got the guffaw when it went for absurdity.
#72: The Clearing - - A kidnapping story that's not nearly so clever as it tries to be
#73: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - ¾ - Decent, when it doesn't try to pretend Harry Potter is the main character.
#74: The Will Smith Robot Movie - - Even trying to judge it as seperate from Asimov, pretty dumb.
#75: Touch of Pink - ¼ - On the cute side, but still very funny.
#76: The Bourne Supremacy - - Please, just show me what's going on.

Hellboy - I liked the opening setup with the Nazi's, Rasputin, black magic, and the cutesy baby Hellboy, but once it fastforwarded to "modern day" I was completely bored. The story was thoroughly uninteresting, the characters barely fleshed out beyond basic comic archetypes, the humor almost all flat, the fights poorly choreographed and the effects crude at best. I started nodding off and my wife took the opportunity to hit the fast forward button. The ending is somewhere between groan-worthy and MST3K high camp. C
