Actually I linked to my own review, where I corrected you on the following misstatement about Ashley Judd's character and her best friend:

Quote:
Lynn Collin's "R.C." convinces her friend, "Agnes" to hit up the local lesbian bar where she already has a friend in mind for her to meet.
In fact, the two of them work at the bar, which is established right at the outset. Knowing who Agnes is and how she got there is more than a little important to understanding the rest of the film.

Interesting thread, but actually in many ways impossible.

While these are hardly the "Worst Movies Ever Made", some titles comes to mind..
-Batman & Robin
-Evan Almighty (I still like Steve Carell)
-The Blair Witch Project
-The Adventures of Pluto Nash

...

I´m sure there are others..

*US PS3 (1080p) - Xbox 360 Elite (HDMI) - Nintendo Wii (Euro) - Sony PSP-2000 - Nintendo DSi
*HD DVD Toshiba XE1 (1080p) - Sony Bravia KDL-40W2000 (1080p) - Yamaha RX-V1800 (HDMI 1.3)

Re: Worst Movies Ever Made?

Three films I paid money to see and actually felt angry about the experience:

Independence Day (1996)
What Dreams May Come (1998)
Vanilla Sky (2001)

All just hateful. Of course, YMMV.

Oh, I'd challenge that this film isn't just one I don't like, it simply is one of the worst films I've ever seen. In fact, it's bad to such an extent it should infuriate you.

Find me another film issued in the last 20 years that starts out with such a racist base premise, then clouds it with scenes of people laughing at their own jokes while using more race-bating and long moments where not only does nothing funny happen, but it goes out of the way to punish the audience for even paying.

This film is beyond bad. It's not merely a film I don't care for, it's a film that should have never been made, anywhere.

I can forgive films that are Ed Wood bad, films with a lower budget and have bad storylines, poor production values. But this is a major film with a fair budget that someone had to oversee and approve. This is Howard the Duck without the fun. It's Earth Girls Are Easy but not as funny. And it was greenlit by someone and let go.

So, it's near the top of my list. I might add a few from the past, like Bruce Willis in North, Johny Neumonic, Super Mario Brothers, etc. this film is easily in my top 10 now.. and near the top. Because someone, somewhere should have read this and stopped it before it ever hit the screen.

I guess you would call that poor character development.

You keep using that movie. I do not think it means what you think it means. ..

I understand that not everyone loves The Matrix and might even find it boring -- I thought Iron Man was dull, so I see how big-event action movie that everyone else adulates can just come across tiresome.

But it's #71 on all-time box office grosses by at least one measure; clearly it's broadly enjoyed. Its special effects were ground-breaking, winning Oscars for Sound Effects Editing and Visual Effects. It seemed to almost single-handedly sell the then-new DVD format to an uncertain marketplace (it seemed every in-store DVD demo ran The Matrix's loop for the next five years). It spawned a legion of copycats. And anecdotally, I've never known an action movie fan who didn't like it.

Even if you don't care for it personally, I can't see any way to actually consider it a "worst ever" movie.

Ok, enough lionizing a Keanu Reeves movie

As for me, I can't fathom the love for American Beauty. From the same year as The Matrix, I saw it and thought it a decent movie; a bit tedious and preachy in places. But then the critical raves rolled it, which I found incomprehensible. I had a strong negative reaction to the critical acclaim, and now consider AB a terrible movie. Irrational, I suppose.

This has probably been posted.

Battlefield Earth HANDS DOWN HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE THE WORST!!!

Seriously It took me three tries to get through the whole thing. My friend and I enjoy watching bad movies sometimes because we like to make fun of them in Mystery Science Theater sort of way.

This one is so bad that you can't even make fun of it.

On my first watch, I wasn't thrilled with AB either, but I eventually saw it again and it improved. It's sort of a fable and needs to be taken that way. Kind of like Perfume (Tykwer) but less extreme. Still, aren't you really talking a movie that isn't one of the worst ever made, but just not worthy of the critical praise, in your opinion?

Re: Worst Movies Ever Made?

This thread got me thinking. Who is worse off, someone that sees very few movies because he is very strict and picky about what he will go see, or someone that sees everything that comes out and hates 70% of it? Obviously the person who judges everything by trailers and critics will miss out on those rare gems that he will really love, but never see. And the other guy gets to see those rare gems, but had to sit through the love guru to find them.

For me, I refuse to go see most movies, because I know just from trailers what i'm going to dislike. I know there are films that I'm missing out on, but I just can't believe people actually pay to see something after seeing a hideously bad trailer.

Most movies that come out are just bad. It pains me to think that some people actually sat around in a room, discussed the entire film, and then came to the conclusion that a movie like Exit Wounds would be a good idea. And then, actually hired people to be in the film and direct it, all the while none of them looked around and said "damn we are making one terrible movie". I read through this long list of films and laugh because there are so many I have never seen, and will never see. Like howard the duck, who actually didn't have anything better to do then see this?

Actually, my opinion is that both types are missing out. I watch pretty much everything I can get my hands on and will give movies that I think I'll hate a chance. That said, I've gotten more entertainment out of "bad" movies like "GYMKATA" then I did "Gone With The Wind", and I'd never say that Gymkata is a good film, or a better achievment then Gone With The Wind. I don;t necessarly seek out movies I think I wont like, just a case of I wont turn down an opportunity to watch them if it arrises.

Honestly, the worst film I've seen in the past 10 years is "Alone In the Dark", based on it's the only one I've shut off half way through (got votoed by the peopel I was watching it with, otherwise I probably would of stuck it out), and I honestly never saw such an inept film where everything combined to make it frustrating to watch, especially since it had people in it and a budget that it could of been better.

The only other films I've turned off and never revisted was... *deep Breath...* Doctor Zhivago. *DOdGES BULLETS* The pace jsut bored me to tears and I never got into it. I would never lump it in with a Alone In The Dark though, since it is a visually stunning and well acted piece, just not enough to hold my attention span. Maybe one day I'll give it a shot again... took my 3 attempts to get through 2001 : A Space Odyssy without falling asleep...

A lot of films actually do start out as good ideas with well written and smart scripts.

Unfortunately through pressure from the studios with test screenings and marketing studies many good smart scripts are dumbed down to appeal to the lowest common denominator for the big "cash grab".

I know what you mean though.

Sometimes I'll be watching a film and I'm thinking that it's not that some one came up with this idea. It's the fact the someone thought it was good and gave it the green light.

Re: Worst Movies Ever Made?

I saw part of Blood for Dracula the other day, and it seems like a candidate for this thread, but I don't know. Lesbian sisters, nudity, Dracula getting turned into a torso? That last bit was actually pretty awesome, especially when he's running around with no arms. Kind of wonder if Lucas saw this scene before making Sith.

I don't remember for sure, but I think the dude might have beat the vampire with one of his own arms. If so,

Definitely not a "worst". Rather, a comparison. My reaction to AB is similar to those who suggest The Matrix is a "worst" movie. They didn't get it, and counter-react strongly to the incessant praise, as did I with AB.

Re: Worst Movies Ever Made?

When the topic of American Beauty comes up, I find myself re-reading Glenn Erickson's (aka The DVD Savant) critique. Glenn's piece certainly gave me some things to consider. (While I'm not a big fan of AB, I would not place the film in any worst category.)

DVD Savant: Thoughts on American Beauty

- Walter.

Fidelity to the source should always be the goal for Blu-ray releases.

Re: Worst Movies Ever Made?

Like I said, I take AB as a kind of fable. A Grimm's Fairy Tale of sorts. I agree with DVD Savant that it really doesn't work as outright social satire or commentary. The characters are charicatures. Remember that at the end of the "Real" Cinderella (as in the original story), birds came down and pecked out the eyes of the two sisters. AB is somewhat similar to that, though I think most of the people who praise it mistakenly take it literally.

I'm sure a lot of the time the execs know it's going to be a bad film. The question just becomes "Is it something we can make some money off?"

I hesitate to add this movie but I just have to.

Dracula:3000

It is just brutal. I don't think I have the words to describe it.

I hesitate to bring it up because I really like the star, Casper Van Dien. I worked with him in a movie and he is a really great guy. But WOW...did that movie suck! Haha.

When questioned about this movie, Casper responded: Well, it was fun to make.

I guess if someone offered me a hundred thousand dollars to shoot a crap film, I would be more than happy to do so! Hmmm...in fact I have done so for fraction of that!
